Because Latios won't be able to post a quiz Saturday, I shall be going (it's 15 minutes away from Saturday where I live lol):

Static's Miscellaneous Melody Quiz XI (Round 84)
[Folder of Stuff]

This quiz is similar to many previous quizzes in that there are melodies in it, but now there are some bassline-only, chord-only, and rhythm-only melodies. Hopefully some of you guys will figure them out.

Also, if you manage to score at least a 3 on this quiz, you'll have the option to take a special supplementary bonus quiz with 5 additional melodies that can add to your score. However, there's a catch: If you don't correctly guess at least one melody on this quiz by the time I post the results, your score will drop to 0. If you think you're lucky, try this option. Keep in mind that the melodies on this supplementary quiz are Nintendo-only and come from 5 separate series. I will also allow one hint for a melody of your choice for the supplementary quiz only.

Static

Sorry for the double-post, but this is an important announcement:

Because I'm such a nice person, and also because of the nature of melody quizzes, I'm now allowing anyone to take the supplementary quiz no matter their score. However, all of the other rules and caveats still apply so it may not be in your best interest to try it out.

It seems I have once again overestimated my quiz lol, so I'm back with some (optional) hints for the main quiz:

Spoiler
  • 17 of the 20 melodies are from Nintendo systems.
  • 13 of the 20 melodies are from Nintendo-exclusive series.
  • There are 4 Mario melodies, 3 Zelda melodies, and 3 Kirby melodies.
  • There are 2 NES melodies, 4 SNES melodies, 3 GCN melodies, 1 DS melody, 2 Wii melodies, 1 3DS melody, 2 Wii U melodies, 1 PS4 melody, 2 PC melodies, and 2 MUL melodies.

Similar to what MSF has done in the past, I will be listing some games that are not featured in this quiz:
Spoiler
  • [NES] Mega Man 2
  • [NES] Dragon Warrior
  • [SNES] Final Fantasy IV
  • [SNES] Secret of Mana
  • [GCN] Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
  • [GCN] Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
  • [DS] Mario Kart DS
  • [DS] Pokémon Black Version & Pokémon White Version
  • [Wii] Kirby's Return to Dreamland
  • [Wii] The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
  • [3DS] Bravely Default
  • [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf
  • [WiiU] Super Mario Maker
  • [WiiU] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
  • [PS4] Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • [PS4] Dark Rose Valkyrie
  • [PC] Touhou Tenkuushou ~ Hidden Star in Four Seasons
  • [PC] Doki Doki Literature Club
  • [MUL] Persona 5
  • [MUL] Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back
[close]

In addition to all of these hints, I will be offering up to 5 hints on melodies of one's choice, but you can only use one hint for one melody.

May as well post this just before I go to bed.

Here's my tenth(!) Guess-The-Song Quiz:
[PDF] | [MIDI] | [MUS] | [MSCZ]

The MUS is readable in Finale, including Finale Notepad. The MSCZ is readable in Musescore. All other files are based on the original MSCZ, not the MUS--this explains why the PDF doesn't look like the MUS.
The MUS may display and/or play back bugged. The MSCZ, MIDI, and PDF shouldn't.

This quiz shouldn't be too difficult, but don't feel too bad if you only get one or two! PM away!

You can PM answers to me until Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Saturday, Oct. 21 8:00 PM forum default time). I will not count any submissions made after that time, as I'll be too busy tallying results.
Results will be posted shortly afterwards.

Some guidelines for answering, how the melodies are transcribed, and what counts as a correct answer--oh yeah, and some hints right off the bat:
  • You may submit YouTube links/videos instead of game name-song name/best known use pairs.
  • All tempos are approximate.
  • Like last time, I will mark unambiguous songs with the right melody in the right key as correct. If your guess has the right melody in the wrong key, I will mark it as incorrect but PM back that you were close. You can freely guess again until the deadline.
  • I may not have gotten octave voicings correct in this quiz. If you think you've got the right song but it's off by an octave or two in parts, just guess that song anyway.
  • I may not have gotten articulations correct in this quiz.
  • As before, I PM hints! If you can't figure out the song at all, but you guess the series the melody is from and/or give a YouTube link to a similar-sounding piece, I'll PM back about whether you're on the right track.
  • The more obscure the song, the more generous the hints get.
  • #7 is less likely to be completely melodically and/or rhythmically accurate than the rest of the melodies.
  • The last bar of #1 may be incomplete.
  • The last note of #7 is cut off.
  • The only series with more than one song in this quiz are Mario and Kirby. None of the other songs share a series.
  • No two consecutive melodies are from the same series.
  • Heck, no two melodies are from the same game!
  • Yes, there is exactly one Pikmin song in this quiz! Sadly, there are no Zelda songs in this quiz.

Well, if there's one thing I've learned from this, it's that supplementary quizzes were kind of a bad idea and screwed some people over (though luckily some were able to save themselves). Maybe in future I'll try to implement some more fair idea, who knows. Either way, thanks for trying this quiz out, it was a fun one.

#3
"Title"/"Title Theme"/"Main Theme", from Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Timestamp: 0:01

I've been tempted to arrange a Mario Kart: Double Dash!! medley that contains the Waluigi Stadium theme, then the Mushroom City theme, then this.

At any rate, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! music is deceptively complex key-wise, what with chromatic neighbour tones (such as the note this melody starts with), flattened mediants in major-key pieces (like this one), flattened subtonics in major-key pieces, and all.

#4
"Money Machine"/"Crazy Rolling in Money", from Kirby: Planet Robobot, used as President Haltmann's (and President Haltmann 2.0's) boss theme
Timestamp: 1:22

This is one of the more consonant melodies in President Haltmann's boss theme, and I thought it would still be recognizable enough.

Given how dissonant and strange this is, I commonly think of this theme as "Max's Theme" (the boss's given names are Max Profitt), as it seems rather like Marx's theme updated for the 21st century. I detect world music influences in "Max's Theme", though, unlike in Marx's theme.

Dudeman should show up and get his Kirby: Planet Robobot song correct.

This song is infamously in 11/8, and that can be pretty disorienting at times.

Timestamp: 0:17

I remember going through the Mario Kart 8 OST during work some time back, and when I raided this OST again for answers to a previous Guess-That-Song quiz, I bumped into this piece again and was reminded of how great it is.

I like the metal and jazz influences in this piece. It's rather like aggressive jazz fusion.

Now, why does the piece itself have to start with an F sharp minor riff when the rest of this piece is in D minor...

Motoi Sakuraba has a habit of composing pretty insane mixed meter pieces, such as this one. Oh no, this isn't done changing time signatures yet!

I picked this theme because it's one of the only Golden Sun themes to appear in a Super Smash Bros. game. I picked this melody because it's one of the most distinctive melodies in the entire Smash Bros. remix, IMO.

Timestamp: 0:00

I've made enough references to this theme in other NinSheetMusic posts of mine, so I figured it was time to use it in a Guess-That-Song quiz.

As far as I can tell, this theme and Galacta Knight's theme are the only themes in Kirby Super Star Ultra that are completely new--all the other KSSU themes that weren't in Kirby Super Star are remixes of preexisting Kirby themes.

I was too lazy to transcribe the very-prominent-at-times accompaniment for this melody.

...Yeah, this is yet another VGM theme I first found by listening to a GaMetal remix. Fun fact: that's how I discovered Undertale music, too--I first heard that game existed from reading the description of the GaMetal Megalovania remix.

I'm surprised we haven't used this song yet, especially given that it's in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

(The title translates to "Love Song"/"Song of Love", for those who care.)
