  • #25: Not from one of the four main series. Originally released for PC and then later on a Nintendo console. The last two measures are played by a flute (I honestly don't know what the heck is playing the rest).

WAIT I'M DUMB

THAT'S LITERALLY JUST A SAXOPHONE PLAYING THE REST OF THAT

Hint has been updated.

Requested Hints (11) - #1, #2, #5, #6, #9, #10, #12, #20, #21, #23, #25 (UPDATED)
  • #1: From one of the four main series. Played by a woodwind instrument that sounds like a recorder (I happen to know of a cover that plays the melody with a recorder). It's iconic enough to have received remixes in two other games within the same main series; however, it hasn't appeared in any Smash Bros. game, while multiple other songs from the same game have.
  • #2: Not from one of the four main series. Not from the first game in its series, yet still iconic. Heard sometime during the first half of the game (main game only, not including extra modes/bonus levels/postgame content).
  • #5 Not from one of the four main series. Iconic 8-bit track, and definitely the most well-known theme from the game--it's the music that is primarily heard during gameplay. Has also gained popularity through prominent Smash Bros. remixes.
  • #6: From one of the four main series. 8-bit track. Has received numerous remixes in later games of the series.
  • #9: From one of the four main series. Nintendo DS game. The track is very similar to other songs in different games in the same series; they're most likely based off one another.
  • #10: From one of the four main series. Heard sometime during the second half of the game (main game only, not including extra modes/bonus levels/postgame content). Played by a rock guitar.
  • #12: From one of the four main series. Plays in a level/area that is reached sometime around the halfway point of the game (main game only, not including extra modes/bonus levels/postgame content). This was the only section of the track that I could feasibly transcribe while still expecting others to recognize it.
  • #20: Not from one of the four main series. Nintendo 3DS game. Boss battle theme that is specific to one boss only.
  • #21: From one of the four main series. Boss battle theme that plays for multiple bosses, with slight variations for each boss. Most of the melody is electronic synth.
  • #23: From one of the four main series. The game was released before the year 2000. This game has been used once and only once before in a melody quiz, and nobody got it. (I was not the one who used it.) Also, if you still don't think this is enough, then take the time to think about why I might be having trouble giving hints about this melody/game.
  • #25: Not from one of the four main series. Originally released for PC and then later on a Nintendo console. The last two measures are played by a flute, while the rest is played by a saxophone. (UPDATED)

Uh oh. I tried opening the file on my phone, and it worked. I don't know why it'd be incompatible on your side...

Anyways, requested hints!
Spoiler
5 - What time in the game does this play? At high noon Well, not in a level itself. You probably only hear the first part most of the time. The game's on a regular console!
6 - Hmph. Glad you asked. This track has an electric guitar in it, giving it an edgy vibe at times. The game's on a handheld console!
7 - This game is... a bit old, but not old enough to be an artifact or anything. This music is pretty dry. The game's on a handheld console!

4 people have submitted so far, current scoreboard is still up here! Which, according to Google Sheets, is unavailable. Uh, hold on.

Answers and Results!

The moment you've all been waiting for. We had 12 participants participate in Round D, 9 of which also participated in Rounds A through C. (Levi declined to participate this round due to being busy, so the total results for all 100 melodies will now only include the other 9 regular competitors.)

Without further ado, the answers to the final part of the four-part round!

*Note*: I was planning to get the cumulative results for all four rounds today, but since there's a lot of data to go through and it's late over here, I'm going to be putting that off until tomorrow. You can probably figure out the overall standings yourself if you so desire, but the final post will include statistics such as overall scores and rankings for each difficulty section and for each game series, along with congratulations, honorable mentions, and my final thoughts, so stay tuned.

So it turns out that the title theme is actually one of the harder tracks to recognize from this game. Who would've thought.

I guess maybe it's because of the long ambient intro, but I figured it was iconic nonetheless. Still, a good number of people recognized it. (And a good number of people were also driven insane...)

Fun fact: instead of the Mint Leaf, this item was originally the Sweet Potato in the Japanese version. Why they changed it, I have no idea.

With the whole "green" theme I had going on here, I was actually really tempted to use Green Greens as #1, but that would've been far too obvious for my liking. Mint leaves are green, anyway. (Although, sweet potatoes aren't...)

Sonic isn't the most popular franchise here on NSM, so this might've been a tricky one to top off the Easy section, especially considering that I picked the quiet melody in the middle. With how iconic it is, though, it just didn't feel right to put it in the Medium section. (Besides, my Medium section was already full, anyways...)

A pretty badass battle themes that really comes out of nowhere, especially considering what he was like in the original RSE. With its 3.25 million views on YouTube, I thought it wouldn't be too hard for most good Pokémon fans to recognize. I'll admit that I'm not actually not a huge fan of this battle theme, largely in part because I really wish the loop was longer than a measly 35 or so seconds...

"Bubblegloop Swamp" - [N64] Banjo-Kazooie (Miscellaneous #6)

Timestamp: 0:56 - 1:07

I figured I might as well use Banjo-Kazooie on my quiz sometime in my four-part round, so here ya go. I probably picked a somewhat more obscure section, but I like to think that it still sounds distinctly like Grant Kirkhope, so I don't think it should have been terribly tricky.

"Minish Woods" - [GBA] The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (Zelda #2)

Timestamp: 0:03 - 0:19

I haven't seen Minish Cap used a single time in any of these quizzes, which is surprising, so I picked what I felt was one of the more memorable themes as a test. Looks like we've got quite a few people who've played it.

For some reason a surprisingly high number of participants singled this one out as being familiar. Perhaps this game is more popular than I thought. Or maybe it just sounds similar to a lot of other songs? As Latios pointed out, the rhythm is surprisingly similar to the same part of Onett that I used for #2...

Considering that half the participants were able to guess a well-known track from DKC Returns in my third quiz, I was hoping that one of the more well-known tracks from Tropical Freeze would also garner a couple answers.

Looks like only one person knows it. It's a shame, because it sounds so beautiful...

Timestamp: 0:54 - 1:07

Only one person? Really? Granted, I picked the possibly less memorable part at the end (because I really didn't want to have to transcribe the gibberish singing), but it's got enough views on YouTube that I thought Splatoon fans who kept playing up to the final Splatfest would know this one.

Maybe it's just that everyone else here picked Team Callie. But Marie's song is totally better...

"Green Yards" - [GCN] Pikmin 2 (Miscellaneous #9)

Timestamp: 0:42 - 1:02

Took me a while, but Pikmin's finally represented in this 100-melody round, as promised.

Pikmin 2 dungeon music is actually randomly generated, but these phrases here (or very similar ones) continuously keep popping up, from what I've heard in gameplay videos, so it still wasn't too hard for our Pikmin 2 fans to recognize--even if it plays for nothing more than a single sublevel.

"Raid Battle" - [MOBILE] Pokémon Go (Pokémon #3)

Timestamp: 0:02 - 0:12

Proof that this game is dead, huh. Raids are a feature that got added a little over two months ago, so it looks like nobody's really touched the game since then. I sure haven't; I only know this one because it kept popping up in my sidebar a lot. I was hoping someone would recognize it the same way, like with Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure, but it looks like nobody did.

The bassline I picked may have been a little generic, but it's one of the parts that caught my attention the most, and the melodies afterward sound way too similar to main series battle themes.

"Ruins'n Vains - Deep Forest Stage" - [PS2] Mega Man X7 (Miscellaneous #10)

Timestamp: 0:30 - 0:43

Y'know, Snake Man Stage was supposed to be on this quiz, but then Wah went and used that. I was going to leave Mega Man out of this quiz entirely after that, but I felt a little bad for the only Mega Man representation in these 100 melodies being the most iconic one. So, of course, I delved deep into the series looking for a track to throw into the Hard section, and came out with this.

Maybe it's just me, but the part I transcribed reminds me of Super Mario Galaxy in a way...

# of players helped by hint: 0

Get out, Mr. L. This beast is the REAL Green Thunder.

I actually own this game, but I have yet to ever boot it up--it's a time sink to end all time sinks (other than maybe League of Legends). I do own the Astalos and Mizutsune 3DS home menu themes, though, so I know a bit of the music already. It's awesome, trust me.

Hint: From one of the four main series. Boss battle theme that plays for multiple bosses, with slight variations for each boss. Most of the melody is electronic synth. (requested by NocturneOfShadow)

# of players helped by hint: 0

It turns out that variations on this boss battle theme also play for the second and third bosses, which I was actually not aware of before Dekka pointed it out in her submission. I suppose this is what happens when you only play the first world before getting bored... I tried to love it, but really, it was honestly a letdown after the greatness that was Canvas Curse. Music's pretty good, though.

"Drowsy" - [WiiU] Dr. Luigi (Mario #3)

Timestamp: 0:46 - 1:00

This is where we start getting into really obscure territory.

For anyone who's frequently checked the My Nintendo rewards, I imagine you'll have seen discounts offered for this game multiple times. The question I wanted to test, though, was to see if anyone had actually bothered to play the game.

For the record, I haven't. But I've listened to the new music and it's not bad. Also, based on the comments section, it looks like this track was also used in SMG4, which I guess would be an alternative way to recognize this one. Nobody did, though.

Hint: From one of the four main series. The game was released before the year 2000. This game has been used once and only once before in a melody quiz, and nobody got it. (I was not the one who used it.) Also, if you still don't think this is enough, then take the time to think about why I might be having trouble giving hints about this melody/game. "This World Isn't an Illusion" - [WiiU] Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (Miscellaneous #12)

Timestamp: 0:54 - 1:13

There are a lot more Wii U games on this quiz than I realized...

This game didn't have great sales, nor is it very well-known at all, but I remember being hyped for it back when I more into Fire Emblem. Granted, while this is a crossover involving Fire Emblem, it's mostly Shin Megami Tensei gameplay. I've had my eye on this game for a long time but haven't bothered to pick it up yet, but I've listened to some of the music and it is just amazing.

This is also a very weeby game. I approve.

"Piranha Jungle" - [PC] Tadpole Treble (Miscellaneous #13)

Timestamp: 1:16 - 1:32

Hint: Not from one of the four main series. Originally released for PC and then later on a Nintendo console. The last two measures are played by a flute, while the rest is played by a saxophone. (requested by WaluigiTime64)

# of players helped by hint: 0

And now, I bring the 100-melody round to a close with a track from one of the most obscure games ever to be used in a melody quiz: Tadpole Treble, a small indie gem released on PC and later the Wii U, made by the creators of the webcomic Brawl in the Family (which is totally worth checking out, by the way). I know I'm not the only BitF fan on here, so I was hoping for a guess, but it was a bit of a stretch.

It's actually a really great game (90 on Metacritic for the PC version), and it's not too long or pricey, so I definitely recommend anyone with a free hour or two to check it out. The music is fantastic, too.

By the way... did you notice?
You know how I kept saying that each round had no melodies from games that were on the prior round?

Well, guess what? Without telling you, I'd taken it a step further. The whole truth is that no single game appeared in twice in any of these 100 melodies. This means that in these four rounds, 100 different games were represented, for the purpose of gauging scores over as wide a variety of games as possible.

And congratulations to our runner-up, Yug_Guy, with 8 out of 15 Zelda melodies correct! With the rest of the competition (aside from Dudeman) miles behind you, it looks like you're nothing short of a Zelda music aficionado yourself.

THE FINAL RESULTS

Honorable Mention
I just wanted to thank this player for their undying participation in the face of all adversity. With a finishing score of 19, congratulations to...
InsigTurtle!

With an absolutely grand 7th place overall finish!

I daresay you deserve some victory music for the wonderful performance you've showed me all these four rounds:

3rd Place
Congratulations to the third place finisher, with a finishing score of 35...
WaluigiTime64!

You performed admirably in the first two rounds, maintaining a consistent 2nd place ranking. Unfortunately, you might have been a little starved of Mario Kart in the last two rounds, since I couldn't overdo it... but in the end, you still came out strong with a solid 3rd place finish, only barely below the 2nd place score. Congratulations, Mario music master. You could say my hat is off to you.

2nd Place
Congratulations to the second place finisher, with a finishing score of 36...
Yug_Guy!

You might not have seemed like the biggest threat starting out, especially with the Galaxy and Galaxy 2 tracks in the first round, but with each round you've risen steadily in both score and rank and proven yourself to be a competent force among melody quiz participants. And for your extensive knowledge of video game music that both encompasses and goes beyond popular Nintendo series, I applaud you.

Though it's no surprise by now, congratulations to the victor, with a finishing score of 46...
...
DUDEMAN!!!

You are the melody quiz CHAMPION! Except for me, of course

I think we all expected this from the moment I posted the first round, but to see you perform so spectacularly on these quizzes, having recognized nearly half the melodies in these four rounds, even when I know some pretty dang obscure stuff... you certainly have not disappointed me. I don't know how you do it, but your experience with video game music must have certainly been a rich and fulfilling one.

Congratulations to you, Dudeman, for being the ultimate victor of this four-part round.

YOU GOT:

SCORE SPREADSHEET

And with that, my final thoughts...
Well, it's been quite a ride, hasn't it?

I'm not actually sure to say now that's over now, huh. So I guess you'll just see me ramble on a bit before I finally close the book on this four-part competition.

I'm not sure what inspired me to do this in the first place, really. I hardly thought the whole "four-part round" thing would take off at all, considering that Dudeman would be the obvious winner from the start.

But it seems, maybe, that it ended up generating more hype then I thought it could. And in the end, I think a lot of interesting moments and tidbits really did result from having a 100-melody quiz with 100 different games.

Regardless, I want to thank the nine of you sincerely for having participated in my rounds for a long time now, even though some of you have been busy, and even though some of you struggle to get even a few melodies. I know that all of you are acquainted with a wide and unique variety of games and soundtracks that really might not be reflected in the scores of these quizzes--after all, this was mostly big Nintendo franchise music.

And trust me, the future quizzes you see from me will be much more lenient--most particularly with fewer Hard melodies, which I think perhaps took up too many of these melodies when I wasn't expecting many, or any participants to get it in the first place.

So after all this, what's next?

...Well. Now that my numbering has been all thrown off, I figure I might as well keep it that way--especially considering what I've got planned in store for next time. The next round you'll see is the MSF Special Round 1... and special it most certainly is. So stay tuned, folks.

And with that... the 100-melody round has come to a close.
