What? Wowser has nothing to do with religion. It is generally an exclamation of surprise; an extension of "Wow!" or a way to swear without swearing.

I don't think the word was given in the context of religion so much as just generally strict, if you're meaning puritanical. I took a double-take as well, but I think that's what was implied.

Just gotta go back a sec to this one. Wowser is actually the exact name that my brother and I gave to a customized Bowser in Smash 4. It has maxed defense and the other stats grow over time. If I recall correctly it also may regain health over time but don't quote me on that. Essentially, it's pretty OP hence the name "Wowser".
