Music / Arranging and Composing
February 05, 2020, 08:17:02 PM
Hello once again NSM, long time no see.

I come back in this glorious light of time asking for a favor.

I have found myself picking up projects as of recent, and require some advice from those who have had similar experiences.

I could use the ol' google machine, but I find that first-hand experiences from peers tend to offer a more favorable result in terms of accuracy and personable use as to how I could approach such an experience.

That being said, here it goes:

I have been hired to do some arranging and copyist work. I have been told to mock-up a contract as the terms, timelines, payment, and so on. I have a general idea of how to handle the first two, but payment seems rather... iffy. I want to do a flat fee, but how do I calculate such a project? Time? Creativity? Time? Hourly seems simple enough when it comes to just doing the work, but disputable if I don't offer a log of some notion. A time card, per se. With a flat fee I could avoid such minute details. Anyways, I'll let the posts hash out this one.

Second order of business is I'm interested in taking on a project that a relative is currently starting. It's composing music for a short film that has been accepted into the sundance film festival. I haven't accepted, but am still interested if anyone has experience producing for film or otherwise that required you to compose by commission.

Thanks for your replies. I miss you all dearly, and hope to return one day when life hasn't kicked me in the balls.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Come one, come all, as we celebrate another update!

I didn't have a chance to formally thank everyone, and to be as well received by the NSM community in my newly ordained position.

Thanks again, and I'll see you all next time, lovelies.

Help! / Screen Capture
June 04, 2017, 12:41:03 PM
Yeah, I know it's not a site question, but I didn't know of anywhere else to put this.

Just bear with me for a moment.

Does anyone know of a good screen capture software that could work on a relatively decent computer? I don't have specs or stuff, and I'm not looking for the best of the best, just something that can render video of a desktop and be exported to a movie maker or something that would look decent enough.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

Help! / Missing .dll file.
August 04, 2013, 02:04:41 PM
So while I was moving some stuff around, apparently 'applycapochords.dll' went missing somewhere. Now every time I open Finale 2013, it says that I'm missing it and need to re-install to use capo chords again. Not that I used that feature, but the message every time I open Finale gets real annoying real quick.

If any one with 2012 has that file, if you could send it to me, that would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Arrangement Contest No. 1

Rules/Requirements:

To rearrange My Road, My Journey from Dragon Quest I into a wind band arrangement.

A) You may use up to a maximum of 10 wind instruments and 2 percussion instrument.

B) Instrument ranges need to be accurate and playable.

C) Sheets must be readable. Make sure everything is nice and organized.

Timeframe:

Each round will begin every Monday and end Friday at midnight central time. You must have your arrangement linked in your post before then or it is considered a forfeit. We will review your arrangement over Saturday and Sunday and post your results as well as the next challenge on the following Monday.

Concept:

To use your knowledge and rearrange a piece from it's light-hearted tone into a, dark tone (From happy to sad). Must also contain an ending.

Use of dynamics, intonation, tone colour and style, will help you achieve this goal.

Scoring and points:

Everything you put into your arrangement will be graded on a 1 to 10 point scale in 5 categories from 4 judges. The maximum amount of points being a 50.0.

Categories:

Concept and Execution (What does this music say and how do I say it?)

Balance and Colour (How does the music overall blend together tonally?)

Instrumentation and Tonality (How effectively was my instrument choice?)

Playability and Technique (How hard is this piece? Is it playable?)

Score presentation (Is the score easy to read? Did I write the music correctly?)

Notes:

USE YOUR IMAGINATION!!!

There's no correct answer to what we're listening for. Use whatever means you think would benefit your musical adventure. Remember; this is your version of the story.

Dynamics make us happy!

I know, I know. Finale doesn't have the best soundfonts, but that's no reason you shouldn't try and experiment with dynamics and expressions. Don't get too crazy with em', just use them how you feel. Also, don't frustrated with finale's shitty midi. If a dynamic or expression doesn't work, don't worry about it. Note it with your submission and we'll happily accommodate you.

Musicality

So, a big problem with arranging older videogame music is; alot of it only has a main line, counter melody and bass line. I understand that most of you haven't arranged much let alone for a bigger ensemble. But I that doesn't mean that it should be that way. Bring out chords, make more elaborate counter melodys, etc, etc. Like I said before, there is no wrong answer as long as the main theme of the song is there.

Music / So, who's heard of Bernstein?
August 04, 2011, 01:09:14 AM
I was thinking; There've been quite a bit of people asking, "how can I improve as a musician?" Or, "How do I find easier ways to arrange better and faster?" I figured there could be an easy answer to that. Have a discussion about it rather than post a million topics about it.

Which brings me to the title of my post. I've been watching quite a bit of videos on this Bernstein fellow and found many of the topics he talks about useful to my own arranging and composition. I'll post some videos later when I have more time but for now; post some questions about a challenge you came across or just a general question you have and I'll get back to you as soon as I can about it.

Help! / Bah!
June 20, 2011, 02:26:16 AM
So, this entire time I've been working out ways to put my work on youtubs. I found a convenient way to capture my desktop on video. Now all that remains is syncing the audio with it. Which is a problem because all the video editors that I seem to be using don't seem to be working as well as I thought they would.

I don't know if google hates me or if I just suck at researching all together, but I need help, bad.

Help! / Screen Capture.

Does anyone know where I can get a good screen capture program that can also capture/sync audio at the same time? I'm currently trying Camstudio but it seems a bit futile.

Help! / So, uhh... yeah.
January 25, 2011, 01:50:51 PM
So, sometime ago there was a link or something someone posted about being able to make notes in the bass clef staffs and were able to extend them up to the treble staff. I don't recall how to do it or who posted it. If someone could help, that would be greatly appreciated.

I swear, I've never seen a single Star Trek show or movie. But that was pretty darn epic.

What about you guys?
