Quote from: Libera on January 26, 2021, 06:37:50 AMWhat is the harm in waiting?  I'm failing to see it.  Two months is nothing for the site in the grand scheme of things.  Why not just wait to avoid all these potential issues?

What is the harm in submitting it now? People are both playing the demo and doing things with its music across the Internet. Modifying the arrangement, which is not a foreseeable necessity, only concerns Gav and at least one updater.

Hellloooo there, quizzers! Welcome back to...

The NSM NotUntilLately Guess-That-Melody Quiz!

We had a great turnout this time; that's good enough for me to promise more quizzes in the future. I'll bet you're all anxious to find out which ones you missed, so here they are!

The Answers
Normal Section

Melody #1
1. [SNES] The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - "Hyrule Castle"

Timestamp: 0:56

Quote[10:29 PM] Maelstrom: 1 is farewell hyrule king
Quote[6:24 PM] Yug Guy: #1 - Ganon's Theme

I blame myself.

This was that one melody I wasn't all too familiar with myself (I'm not a Zelda fan), but I figured it would be one of the easier ones to pick out.

Melody #2
2. [MUL] Sonic Mania - "Studiopolis Zone, Act 1"

Timestamp: 0:55

I don't like Sonic the Hedgehog as a game, but this is one of them I can appreciate, for two reasons: 1.) Fan service, and 2.) Music. Turn it up!

Quote[8:48 PM] Radiak488417: oh 3 is the smb3 credits duh

You wouldn't believe how happy 14-year-old me was to finally hear this. Nearly brought me to tears.

4. [SWITCH] Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield - "Battle! (Battle Tower)"

Quote[6:15 PM] Radiak488417: 4 is megalovania from pokemon sword and shield
Quote[10:06 PM] BlueKirby: 4 is the baby is you battle tower from pokemon sw/sh
Quote[10:38 PM] Static: hm
[10:38 PM] Static: could i get a hint for 4
[10:38 PM] LeviR.star: pokemon
[10:39 PM] Static: wow
[10:39 PM] Static: i was way off
[10:39 PM] Static: but it still sounds familiar
[10:39 PM] Static: i wouldnt know it tho if its pokemon

Only a composer like Toby Fox would reuse material when asked to write a song for the biggest video game franchise in the world.

And somehow, his least memorable work since his Homestuck era ended up being the most memorable song in the game. Go figure.

[10:41 PM] mastersuperfan: KDL3 or before
[10:41 PM] mastersuperfan: I think
[10:41 PM] mastersuperfan: I could be wrong
[10:41 PM] mastersuperfan: don't tell me
[10:41 PM] LeviR.star: i won't
[10:41 PM] mastersuperfan: but first stop, Kirby's Adventure
[10:41 PM] LeviR.star: this'll be interesting

Folks, this game would probably be your favorite Kirby title if you had friends to play it with.

No wonder it wasn't my favorite...

Well, Nobuo Uematsu is practically the John Williams of the VGM world, I'll give you that.

9. [GB] Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version - "Cycling"

Timestamp: 0:23

Quote[6:24 PM] Yug Guy: #9 - I want to ride myyyyyyyy
Quote[10:26 PM] mastersuperfan: now that I think about it, #9 sounds like old Pokémon
[10:26 PM] mastersuperfan: I just didn't think you would use two Pokémon tracks on one quiz when you haven't played it

[10:27 PM] mastersuperfan: so #4 actually counts as an Undertale track instead of a Pokémon track which means #9 can be Pokémon too
[10:27 PM] LeviR.star: could be...
[10:27 PM] mastersuperfan: it has to be
[10:27 PM] mastersuperfan: I swear

What a fun little song this is. This tune had several folks scratching their heads -- and others pulling their hair out.

This melody's outcome was an even bigger disappointment than the last's. After all the hints I dropped in the Discord...

Guys! This is the Contra theme everyone should know! I would've even accepted the NES rendition!

Melody #12
12. [NES] Mega Man 3 - "Hard Man Stage"

Timestamp: 0:13

Quote[9:09 PM] Dudeman: #12: Hard Man Stage - Mega Man 3 (more like easy-melody-to-guess man, amirite nyuk nyuk nyuk)
Quote11:12 PM] mastersuperfan: "hey I have a hard mega man melody for you and I wanna see if you can get it"
[11:12 PM] mastersuperfan: and I picked the two measures of the lower voice when the upper voice is doing those 16th note arpeggios
[11:12 PM] mastersuperfan: and I sent it to him and he's like "hard man?"
[11:12 PM] mastersuperfan: and I'm like "see I told you it was hard"

Joking aside, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of this melody; a decent number of people got it. Well done!

Melody #13
13. [GB] Castlevania Legends - "Bloody Tears"

Timestamp: 0:07

Quote[10:50 PM] Dudeman: I should've freaking known you would've used the GB version
Quote6:44 PM] Radiak488417: yep it's from cv legends
[6:44 PM] Radiak488417: that's terrible why would you do that
[6:45 PM] LeviR.star: it's in the last 3
[6:45 PM] LeviR.star: they're supposed to be hard, remember?
[6:45 PM] Radiak488417: oh true

This was picked especially to screw with the guessers. And while it was pretty mean, nearly everyone who got it adopted the same strategy: scrub the "all versions" video.

So, in the end, was it really all that hard?

14. [NES] Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line - "Demon Attack"

Disappointed, but not surprised

It's too bad our Dragon Quest section is so empty. But maybe it's for the best -- orchestra doesn't translate well to the keyboard.

Hmph. The only person who got this one found it by scrubbing. See if I put another Fire Emblem melody in a quiz again...

Quote from: XiaoMigros on January 15, 2021, 07:07:09 PMReally? I didn't know that. I'll leave it as is for now until the updaters settle on something because it's probably known as Toy Time Galaxy to most people.

It's hard, deciding between official names and tracks people would definitely know them by.

That's the only major struggle with Super Mario Galaxy sheets, I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#577
Oh thank God, someone actually did this one!

And did it well, too! Awesome work, Radiak!

After a four year hiatus following his last quiz that drove everyone bonkers...

...he's back, baby! The creator of...

The NSM NotUntilLately Guess-That-Melody Quiz!

Yes, I've returned after a sudden urge of motivation (pressed by lack of motivation to practice my sax,) and made a brand new quiz with fifteen melodies! This time around, I've got a reformed sense of judgement. That means no:

- Satellaview music
- Mega Man Game Boy music

-- nor any music I know that no one but me would recognize!

This time, I've used music from games I've never even played, to make sure everyone gets a chance to hear something they know. The first twelve melodies are at a normal difficulty, and the last three are especially obscure, but still notable in some sense. We'll just have to see how well you all do!

Here's Quiz #3!

1.13.21 Melody Quiz.zip

Have fun playing! I'll post the answers once I feel enough people have played.

(Will you accept this quiz as an apology, Dudeman?)

Quote from: Libera on January 10, 2021, 09:32:02 AMAh I see now why you had it as text.  But the answer is yes, this can be fixed!  Right click on the expression and select 'Edit Expression Assignment' and then untick 'Scale Expression with Attached Note'.  I think it's set up that way by default since there are a lot of expressions/articulations that you would want to scale with the size of the note, but not this one.

Did this and updated!

Quote from: Libera on January 09, 2021, 03:13:16 PMJust some small things from me:

-The 'twinkling' indication in the final bar should be entered as an expression rather than text.  (This doesn't actually affect how the sheet looks but it's better practice to do it like this.)
-The con pedale and senza pedale should be aligned to beat 1 of their respective bars rather than the start of the staff.
-The tempo marking in bar 13 could be a bit lower (along with the 8va).  At the moment it's half way between the two systems.

Everything else looks great, nice job.

- since it shrinks as an expression, I'll keep this particular indication as text
- sure thing, but the senza pedalecan only move so far to the right, as it's pretty close to the (triangle tom) note
- moving that down

Files updated!

I had it that way before, but the expression shrunk down in respect to the size of the notes. Any way I can fix this?

The mystery of Retro Theme 1's whereabouts will live on forever...
#583
I think that, seeing as this project has now been revived, we should consider arranging the new music written for Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn on the 3DS. The credits listed sound team members Akihiro Juichiya and Soshiro Hokkai as presumed composers. One of them might have been only in charge of sound effects, but we don't know for sure at the moment.

I'll volunteer to take on this theme:

There's a few other tracks added to the port, but I'm pretty sure this one is the only original song. I'll work on tracking down the new music; I don't own this port of the game, but I'm sure the Kirby Wiki Discord server would know more about this.

No Puyo Puyo sheets on NinSheetMusic before the arrival of this one? I guess the series's music wasn't as popular as I thought.
