Help! / Re: What key/time signature is this song in?

need key sig and time sig for this

 and the same for this

I agree that "Water Town" is in D major. You can use 4/4 for the meter, but I feel a somewhat strong pull toward 2/2 meter.
"Water Town" borrows a significant number of chords from D minor (e.g. C major, B flat major--the borrowing is prominent from 0:13-0:17), but the important cadences are still in D major, and long stretches of the theme are in D major.

"Day Travel 2", though...it's in 4/4 time, but this theme is in a hinterland between D major and D minor to me, and you can make strong cases for either. It doesn't help that there are prominent G#'s at 0:05-0:08 (implying D Lydian or "D over-sharp major"), then a flip to the D Phrygian Dominant scale from 0:12-0:16 (I normally use a D minor or even G minor key signature in this case, as the Phrygian Dominant is to harmonic minor as Mixolydian is to major/Ionian).
Sections like 0:25-0:33 and 0:51-0:59 change between so many keys in so short a time that I wouldn't change key signatures at those points.

For the matter, I don't think I ever played the final boss fight of Plants vs. Zombies with the sound on, and after listening to its GaMetal remix, all I remember is its starting melody. Oh, and the theme is too mild for my (especially final boss theme) tastes, and I find its use of funk a bit weird.

Here are the answers to my latest quiz:

#1
"Choco Mountain"/"Choco Mountain & Battle Arenas (Block Fort & Double Deck)", from Mario Kart 64, used as a racetrack theme and a multiplayer battle stage theme
Timestamp: 0:00

I always thought this theme was a bundle of fun, and it seems some of you thought so, too.

"Necrofantasia", from Touhou Youyoumu ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom, used as Yukari's boss theme
Timestamp: 0:01

None of you got "Necrofantasia" the last time I put it in a Guess-That-Song Quiz, so this time, I picked its very first theme and hoped some of you would recognize it this time.

I mean, all those black MIDIs of it must make it famous or at least meme-tastic, right?

...Right?

...Well, at least someone recognized it this time....

"Thundersnail", from Undertale, used as a minigame theme

I thought the first 4 bars only would be too tricky, so I added the next 4 to this melody. At this point, I wasn't 100% sure which line was the melody, so I included both lines.

"Theme of a Tragedic Revenge"/"Theme of a Tragic Revenge", from NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, used as one of Reala's boss themes
Timestamp: 0:15

Actually, all of Reala's boss themes sound pretty good in general, IMO.

I thought this melody's chromatic mediant leanings were distinctive enough to remember, so I put this melody in this quiz. Besides, I've heard two different arrangers remix this theme already....

"Bowser Castle", from Mario Kart: Super Circuit, used as a racetrack theme
Timestamp: 0:01

I first heard of this VGM theme when Jonny Atma released his GaMetal remix of it. I was surprised how much like generic heavy metal his remix sounded (I can normally tell that the original VGM themes aren't in the heavy metal genre).

You can hear some E minor versions of this theme later in the game.

I can't believe I can't find whether GilvaSunner also ripped a video for this song. Is this version even in this game's OST?

"In the Halls of the Usurper (Pridemoor Keep)", from Shovel Knight, used as a stage theme

This being one of the most famous Shovel Knight songs, I only used 4 bars' worth in this quiz.

"Battle! Elite Four"/"Battle! (Elite Four)"/"Elite Four Battle", from Pokemon Black and Pokemon White, used as a boss theme
Timestamp: 0:15

This is one of the better Elite Four themes, IMO (put it this way--I played Pokemon Diamond and beat its Elite Four several times, some of them with the sound on, and I still can't remember their theme).

So yeah, I put it in a quiz since this melody is easier to transcribe than some other Pokemon songs I recognize.

"Boss Battle 1", from Chrono Trigger
Timestamp: 0:31

Yup, my melody was the last 4 bars of this theme. (OK, I saw a transcription where this was split into more than 4 bars.)

I find this theme rather dissonant, anyway, so I didn't want to transcribe too much of it. These bars are some of the most consonant in the entire theme....

"The Master!"/"Master Battle", from Paper Mario, used as an optional boss theme

"Megaton Punch", from Kirby Super Star, used as a minigame theme
Timestamp: 0:21

I actually ripped this melody directly from an old (and somewhat thin-sounding) piano transcription of mine. Given how much better my less faithful piano arrangement of this song sounds, I currently doubt I'll ever submit that transcription to NinSheetMusic, though feel free to convince me otherwise...

The key signatures of this piece get confusing at times, and I'm tentative on whether this melody is actually in E flat major with minor-key leanings.

"Tango of the Troupple King", from Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows
Timestamp: 0:09

Possibly the most famous song in Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, and it's a great one, too.

For those people who say this melody sounds rather like "Spin Ye Bottle" from the original Shovel Knight, I wonder who everyone in that series is taking their dancing lessons from....

And that's why the first thing I did for the main site was replace the Dark Meta Knight sheet--the previous version was one of those made from MIDI stems, and those were horribly inaccurate to boot (so horribly inaccurate that YouTube commenters on videos based on that MIDI called them out for being wrong).

Hold it I'm still trying to replace a Jesse J.K. sheet

It's past midnight on Sept. 16 where I am, so here's my eighth Guess-The-Song Quiz:
[PDF] | [MIDI] | [MUS] | [MSCZ]

The MUS is readable in Finale, including Finale Notepad. The MSCZ is readable in Musescore. All other files are based on the original MSCZ, not the MUS--this explains why the PDF doesn't look like the MUS.
The MUS may display and/or play back bugged. The MSCZ, MIDI, and PDF shouldn't.
With that being said, #11 contains a fall that none of the files play back.

This quiz shouldn't be too difficult, but don't feel too bad if you only get one or two! PM away!

You can PM answers to me until Monday, Sept. 18 at 5:00 PM MDT (a.k.a. Tuesday, Sept. 19 12:00 AM forum default time). I will not count any submissions made after that time, as I'll be too busy tallying results.
Results will be posted shortly afterwards.

Some guidelines for answering, how the melodies are transcribed, and what counts as a correct answer--oh yeah, and some hints right off the bat:
  • You may submit YouTube links/videos instead of game name-song name/best known use pairs.
  • All tempos are approximate.
  • Like last time, I will mark unambiguous songs with the right melody in the right key as correct. If your guess has the right melody in the wrong key, I will mark it as incorrect but PM back that you were close. You can freely guess again until the deadline.
  • I may not have gotten octave voicings correct in this quiz. If you think you've got the right song but it's off by an octave or two in parts, just guess that song anyway.
  • I may not have gotten articulations correct in this quiz.
  • As before, I PM hints! If you can't figure out the song at all, but you guess the series the melody is from and/or give a YouTube link to a similar-sounding piece, I'll PM back about whether you're on the right track.
  • #4 and #10 are less likely to be completely melodically and/or rhythmically accurate than the rest of the melodies.
  • The last note of #4 is cut off.
  • The only series with more than one song in this quiz are Mario, Kirby, and Shovel Knight. None of the other songs share a series.
  • No two consecutive melodies are from the same series.

Like fast dances? The Slavs did, too! Furiant No. 1 in G Minor is a piece I've just published that's meant to be an example of that fiery, hemiola-filled Slavic dance of old, the furiant.

Ouch, this prediction was more correct than I thought it would be:
Quote from: Dekkadeci on May 12, 2017, 04:56:18 PMI suspect half that roster would be filled with versions of Kirby with different copy abilities, if Kirby Fighters Deluxe is any indication.

Looks like the chance that King Dedede and Meta Knight will be unlockable instead of playable from the start just skyrocketed, and now there's a fair chance that only versions of Kirby will be playable in this game (although please, please stuff an unarmoured Meta Knight reference in the roster at least).

Nintendo / Re: Kirby for the SWITCH!!

We finally got the name of this game: it's Kirby: Star Allies!

And whatever dark force is the main antagonist of this game, it's got King Dedede (yet again) and the king seems to like it.

(I'm predicting a Dark Matter-like main antagonist. Hoping for something of 0/02-like scale...)

Nintendo / Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon
September 13, 2017, 07:30:03 PM
Seems like Pokemon Direct released a lot of Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon data today:

The heck?!? Actual new Pokemon introduced mid-generation!!?!
  • UB "Burst" is exclusive to Pokemon Ultra Sun and looks like a flamboyant ball-and-stick humanoid that can throw its jelly-ball head around. It does look a bit like it has a Nihilego for a head, though...
  • UB "Assembly" is a walking brick wall/tower with eyes. It is exclusive to Pokemon Ultra Moon.
  • Note that neither of the above will be those Ultra Beast Pokemons' real species names, though--these are code names, just like the "Lighting" for UB-03 Xurkitree.

More details on new Z-Moves in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon:
  • All Lycanroc forms get access to the Z-Move "Splintered Stormshards". It's based on Stone Edge, it's an attack, it apparently can't even OHKO Tapu Koko the frail-o, and it wipes out all terrain as an effect. Terrain's pretty temporary in general so this seems somewhat overrated to me, but at least something isn't getting hit as hard by Tapu Bulu or someone can finally Spore Tapu Fini...

And the Necrozma forms' English names are "Dusk Mane Necrozma" and "Dawn Wings Necrozma". That supports my theory that Necrozma is mainly forcing day to change to night and vice versa whenever it captures and fuses with Solgaleo/Lunala...
