Music / Is finale worth it?
February 26, 2015, 01:34:49 PM
I'm currently 14 and a student. I have no official music software, and the limitations of finale notepad really bum me out; no time signature changes, etc... won't fit with the arrangements I'm working on as of right now.
So is it truly worth the price tag of $99.(whatever the hell it is)? I know it's great software and all but that price bums me out.
I hear they also give discounts to students. What's the truth behind that? XD

Even though many are chromatic, there are more actually that have theoretical backing to them. The Db major nocturne for example, is built around tritones if I remember right.

I actually pay little to no attention to fingering at all, even when written. Unless I have a problem with a passage. Fingering is not a "piece" of the score, so to speak, it's a guideline to make things easier for you.
What I meant by interpretation dictated by fingering is that sometimes, often with polyphonic music, you must use stronger fingers with one voice to bring it out more if it tends to fade naturally. For instance, in the Bach Fugue in C minor from the WTC book 1, there's one particular passage where it's a good idea to play three notes in a row with your thumb (RH), since basically everything else is doing other stuff. I don't use that particular fingering but I see how it can work.

As I said to other requests of video'ing, I will make some recordings when my setup is all good... which will hopefully be soon! XD

In many scenarios it isn't a bad move, actually. You get the most space out of your hand, and it allows for the fourth finger to be ready to play again. It does, however, cause the third finger to somewhat elevate, creating more distance to cover if you need to play something with 3...
In any case, mostly just go with what's efficent and what suits your hand. Intrepretation (in classical often) will sometimes dictate a fingering for a certain passage, especially in Bach Fugues, if you ever get into that madness, but often it's up to your hand ^^

Tal Tal Heights is certainly one of the harder arrangements on here, but after playing so much classical, just about everything else becomes a breeze in terms of mechanics.
Good for you mariolegofan! I'm currently doing the G minor ballade- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce8p0VcTbuA and B flat minor scherzo- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_MwPdr7WXQ
The trouble with Chopin is that it's actually easier than it sounds, so people get carried away with showmanship rather than focusing on the music.
I'll post some recordings when my setup is complete and when I have time away from school (I go to an arts school that gives me tons of work and tons of other piano material I have to practice daily. Managing practice time is a hard thing to do!). I'll probably post a recording of the Coda of the Ballade soon. It's currently my technical exercise... and musical exercise. If you listen to the inner lines there is a gorgeous melody.
Also, please don't shoot me, but I don't much care for TT heights XD

Sadly, most of the music here is warm up for me. Not all the time musically speaking, but technically I haven't found something on here I can't at least sight read through all the way. Some of the stuff I get lazy with though XD

I looked at the score, and this seems to be proving my argument. The fingerings in there are somewhat logical, but many of them I can already tell wouldn't fit my hand.
He's a great arranger though.

Then do some Chopin before we derail this thread more than we already have. PM me if you need suggestions!
(That goes for anyone else reading!)

What I was saying is that fingering may not be a good idea in some cases because each person's hands are different and fingering suggestions are just that- suggestions. It's damn near impossible to make fingerings that appease everyone.

Moreso, just giving an overview of the hardest components is a good way to warn people.
Also, there IS easier Liszt, it's out there! He has a lovely E minor romance that's quite doable!

The name is long; you'll sure as hell remember me ;)
And yup, planning to stay!
Sorry, my loyalty is currently an IOU to good old Freddy (Chopin). And my kidneys are not the best anyways so you wouldn't want em XD
