Do your discussion stuff here!

Right now, we're talking about choosing the right partner and the right nicknames.
#6
So, here it is!

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. It's a game that brought sorrow and anger to many. It's a game that has many die-hard fans who crave its plot and music. It's a game that, according to IGN, is worse than Explorers of Time/Darkness and worse than Mighty No. 9. But who cares about what that one reviewer thought? The community thinks it's great.

PMD EoS is a rogue-like game. That is, it's like a rogue. It's also a dungeon crawler. That is, you crawl through dungeons. The turn-based gameplay revolves around "Mystery Dungeons", where you go through dungeons, battling enemy Pokémon and finding items as you find your way to the stairs out. However, there's a couple of elements at play here. Your opponents don't move until you move. And if you spend too long on one floor, a mysterious wind funks you up (which still freaks me out to this day). It's all so mysterious, ain't it?

Due to how long I think this'll take me, along with future time constraints, I'll probably only play up until the credits scene. Once we reach the aftergame, I'll decide if I'll continue or not (or perhaps hand the reins over to someone else).

Episodes
Part 1: Welcome to the world of Quizzes Pokémon! (This post!)

Without further ado, let's start the game and realize when we're typing up the post that we totally forgot to nab screenshots of the opening! Whoo!

I'm going to put these into spoilers, here, just in case you have a 56K modem or something.

"Lots of images! Part 1!"

It's a Nintendo game, apparently. Huh. Never knew.

I totally skipped the next logo screen by accident, but hey. There's already 40 or so images here, what's an extra image or two or three or four or–
Anyways, my comments on the following screenshots were the first thoughts that popped into my head while playing. Reading back, I hate myself already. :P

Copyright stuff. Goes on the bottom in Times New Roman, size 10, centre aligned.

HOLY FUCK IS THAT A SHAYMIN

HOLY FUCK IS THAT A LAPRAS

HOLY FUCK IS THAT A TITLE SCREEN

And here we go, about to start the adventure of a lifetime! Notice the glowing thing in the middle of the lake. You can get keychains with them now, I hear. Isn't capitalism amazing? They don't quite have the same properties as the real deal in this game, though. Thankfully.

Time to start the ga–... Hang on, there's still save data here...

*sighs* I ended up memeing myself... This came from a time when I thought John Cena was funny and I wanted to see Cyndaquil's confused face as he said his name.

You can't see him anymore.

So! Let's start the game!

Hello!

Wait, huh? I'm being interrogated? Since when were there customs officials between the human world and the Pokémon world?

Yes, mom...

Wait, is this a quiz show now? Looks like you guys are gonna learn a lot about me today!

Whoa... Funky lights...

I like to think I'm an honest person, so no.

Nevermind... I'm not that honest. Not when it comes to trying to make people feel better.

Admittedly, yes. And it has gotten me into trouble at least once.

In fact, I'm playing this game and writing up a post 6 hours before an exam worth 20% of my calculus mark! And I haven't bothered studying yet because typing up a screenshot Let's Play on NinSheetMusic is wayyy more important that my calculus grade, right?

My... what?

Wait... You can't analyze my aura yet! We haven't even been on a date!

Oh. Sorry.

*pauses game and moves hand to take screenshot*

But... I don't even like green...

You're welcome, game!

Well, I'm being darn hasty right now trying to get to the actual gameplay!

2/3 correct. Good try. (In case you were wondering, I don't know why, but I am a verrrrrrry slow eater)

I've already made too many mistakes. One being typing this post at 3 AM on a school night.

*drumroll*

Oh. Uh, let's try that again, shall we? Not that I have anything against Shinx, I think it's quite cute. But, there's one Pokémon in particular that I'm going for here.

Nope.

Nah.

Hello, fellow turtle! I don't want you!
Anyway, here you can see one of the annoyances some people have with the game: the opening quiz. If you really want a specific Pokémon, you need to be prepared to replay this quiz over and over again until you get the one you want. Sometimes, the generated quiz won't even have your favourite Pokémon as a possible outcome. They fixed it by first taking away the quiz entirely in Gates to Infinity, and then having both the quiz and an option to choose your preferred Pokémon in Super Mystery Dungeon. I do wish they had Cyndaquil in Gates, though... Speaking of which...

Here he is! Lil' Cyndaquil! A timid guy who's sometimes a little shy about new things, misses out on new things because of the challenges, but is kept nice and safe and lives life at his own speed, with no hurries and no worries. Or at least, that's what the quiz says.

And here we go! The first interactive segment of my little Let's Play! Together, you guys need to decide on a partner and nickname! Also, you can suggest names for Cyndaquil himself. I might go with just "Insig", but I usually name my Cyndaquils "Phosphor" because I thought it was cool. Phosphorescence, you know?

So, here are your choices (along with some of my personal favourites in each):

This week: Decide on who my partner is gonna be over here!
http://www.strawpoll.me/13065340

Also, please decide on my partner and my character's names! Perhaps in a separate thread, to avoid cluttering this one up? Or not.

That's it for this week! See you whenever when we'll finally get the ball rolling!

Help! / Does this warrant a second arrangement?
March 26, 2017, 01:34:05 AM
Compare:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfTdm8S2r_o
vs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1xFiBrlwr4

I did an arrangement of the first one a while ago. But the second one doesn't appear in the jukebox, and doesn't have an official name. But does it warrant a second arrangement, or perhaps a note added to the first arrangement on-site?

Music / Quick Question
June 12, 2016, 09:29:06 PM
How do y'all do ear training stuff? Like chord, interval, time signature, and key signature identification.

Just curious, since I was chatting with one of my friends, who has enormous difficulty with that stuff. For intervals, he has this chart with things like "m3 - O Canada" and "p5 - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on it. But I just listen to the two notes and think "D to F is a minor third". So I was wondering how other people here deal with that aural training.

Music / Quick Music Theory Question
January 29, 2016, 12:57:46 PM
I was just wondering.
I noticed that while iii6-I sort of works, but it doesn't sound as "final" as V-I. I suppose that changing iii6 is pretty much V13 without an F, but whatever. So other than the standard stuff like bII7, viio7, and V7, what else could you use that has a dominant function? Why doesn't the chord G-B-Db resolve as nicely to C?
#12
But it's all currently in MIDI form. Depending on the program, the instrument volumes can be super unbalanced. I wouldn't listen to these using Finale instruments, since it can get pretty weird. Can't be bothered to edit them in a DAW, so here y'all go.
Also, strange names galore.

aflaflaflafla.mid
This guy uses 'gunshot' as an instrument. Prett redneck, eh? All joking aside, it's a pretty generic slow thing in E minor.

mooperino.mid
More of a pop influence. I don't know what I was going for, here.

dooperino.mid
This is supposed to be like a 'lower dungeon'-esque remix of mooperino.mid. Sort of subdued and more melancholic.

varniceaminor2.mid
Slow piano arrangement of niceaminor2.mid, which I might post here in the future.

freshhalibutupd.mid
Along with its variations, relies heavily on 1-7-6-5 progression (minor). Whee creativity.

freshhaddockupd.mid
I feel that my descriptions are becoming more inane by the second. Probably not because it's 4:30 am. Slightly darker variation of freshhalibutupd.mid. More like stalehaddock, amirite. There's a small canon-like section ici.

freshherringupd.mid
I'm hungry. Herring would be nice, as long as it's not surströmming. Sorry, Swedish people.
This guy again has a pop song influence. It's again a variation of fresh halibut. The instrument volumes are whack. I like the C section, where the guitar goes whee and the piano goes whee and then the 3 against 2 rhythm.

I'm going to sleep.

Might post more of my previous stuff, once I make it nicer.

Help! / What instrument is this?
July 03, 2015, 03:41:19 PM
What's the low-pitched instrument playing in the following pieces of music? I assume it's some sort of percussion instrument with a pitch bend?
Spoiler
From 0:03 to end

From start to end

From 0:29 to 0:39

From 0:25 to 1:16

EDIT: I found something that resembles the above... It's a 'moose call', and it can either be done on a conga drum or a bongo drum. But I'm not sure if it's the exact same thing as above.

Help! / Finale MIDI controllers
April 27, 2015, 07:14:47 PM
I was wondering about how to mess around with controller events in Finale, so I could have smooth panning, pitch bending, modulation (which does a vibrato effect) and volume control. I'm not sure if too many of you guys have messed around with this, but if you have, could you please explain how to work with these?

The built-in crescendo works well for the volume in most cases, but it doesn't allow me to add a wobbling effect to the volume. The glissandos (glissandi?) and tab slides and stuff work okay for some things, but they don't allow me to go into another pitch bend right after... (at least, not without the playback screwing up)

Help! / Finale on Mac...
November 16, 2014, 02:23:20 AM
So, Mac OS X Yosemite doesn't like Finale products. Finale 2014 is really buggy and Finale 2012 and lower just crash after making new files and playing back.
Is there anything I can do, apart from downgrading the OS or getting a different computer?
(If you're wondering why I have a Mac, it's because I'm seemingly incapable of making my own decisions)
#16
I'll be gradually moving my old stuff over here. In the process, I'll be also changing them to Finale 2012 files... using Finale 2014...
I'll upload all of them one day...

Help! / Key sigs for Octatonic Scales?
August 03, 2013, 01:01:07 AM
So, the song I'm transcribing uses an octatonic scale. The scale in question has G,A,Bb,C,Db,Eb,Fb and Gb. Since there's nothing mentioning which key signature to use in octatonic scales in my advanced rudiments, which key signature should i use? I don't know if this will help, but the key later changes to Eb harmonic minor.
