The one on site got a huge issue that ruins the sheet: It should have a pickup measure. Instead it moves the whole song one 8th note which makes it unnecessary difficult to read it. That is the main problem with the sheet, apart from that it also needs some touch-ups here and there, some changes in the LH and maybe is missing some harmonies in the RH.

I was thinking about doing this but I have other songs I want to arrange so I leave this someone else willing to replace this.

Help! / How do Youtube videos with your arrangements?
September 24, 2015, 12:12:58 PM
Hello I've been thinking of making youtube videos, like Bespinben, where I show my arrangements. And I don't know how to do so I would like some advice how to do it. Note that I'm not aiming at having really fancy high quality videos, I just want to show my arrangements.

Something like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHCll1rOJx4
Just showing my arrangements basically.

Help! / What title should I chose?
September 09, 2015, 10:07:40 AM
I'm starting to arrange songs from the game Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance. The game has a sound test in the game with titles, but the thing is that there also exist a CD with the soundtrack from the game which uses different titles. Now the question is, which titles should I use??

So there seem to be a lot of people writing stories lately so I decided to share with you guys a story I wrote in high school for an English exercise. I think it's quite funny and so thought my friends; but a teacher trainee Urban, who was teaching for our class at that time, really adored it saying it was completely hilarious and almost like a "children story for adults".
So here it is:

                                                                   Galck and Lord Uhh??

Galck was punching a tree (as usual). The tree fell down and smashed the ground. 9982157, said Galck."That tree was too simple, but now I need to slay the evil Lord Uhh??"(and yes he got two question marks in his name for some reason). Galck started to walk to the caves. He stood up on a mountain and needed to jump down one kilometer to get to the caves that would lead to Lord Uhh's fortress. He jumped down. He didn't die because he's Galck.

He then entered a cave, a cave that was dark and therefore called the dark cave. There were 5052,82 evil monsters at the opening of the dark cave. He punched all the monsters in the cave down, except 1,5!!! They fled and they lived, they didn't die. Galck didn't got hurt because he's Galck. You might think it's strange that Galck survives all the time, but it's probably because he has punched trees since he was five years old, so he's very strong and well trained.
Galck continued walking through the dark cave. The cave is dark and scary and evil because its dark. They were a lot of skeletons, rocks, sand, lava, water, air, washing machines, McDonalds, keys, treasure chests, politicians, orcs, green pipes, flying sheep, cheeses, tourist, bacons, noids, the annoying devils and a lot of other things that were too dark to see what they actually were. They were not many who dared to enter the cave cause it was so dark and evil. But Galck was crazy enough to enter the cave. The cave was really quiet even though there were so many things in the cave. It depended probably on that the cave was db-compressed so the sound level was very low. After 105,28 minutes Galck past the dark cave. He was now going to attack Lord Uhh?? and cleanse the land from he evil. But first he needed to cross a few more caves and the next cave was the darker cave.

He entered the darker cave. It was darker. An enormous roar came from the cave, but Galck continued. It appeared later that the roar came from a Phillips CD-player. Galck threw up the CD-player and smashed it to 10000*2 exponential to 2-1 pieces by his epic fists of fury. He continued on through the darker cave and passed it. He was quiet close to Lord Uhh??'s fortress of chaos, doom, destruction and construction. But first, he needed to pass through the darkest cave (oh my god, oh my god, oh my god...).

The darkest cave was darker than the darker cave which was darker than the dark cave. So it was really dark. Galck took up a bag of crisps and a pocket lamp from his backpack. He filled his pocket lamp with lamp oil (witch was used to fuel the pocket lamp) and turned it on and it shined like a sun (it actually was a custom design that got a little sun inside). He started walk thought the darkest cave. The only passage through the darkest cave was a narrow edge of five centimeter. Below, around one hundred meter down was just a big sea of lava. So, don't fall down! Galck made it quiet well balancing through the cave but halfway across the cave he dropped his bag of crisps. "Fuck! Oh my god, so annoying"! "Arghh now I need to go down and get it", said Galck and jumped down into the lava. He swam and swam till he found it and he was nothing but happy to find it. Probably because the crisps had been barbeque crisps, witch is logic according to Blahblahblahblah's formula Crisps + Lava = Barbeque crisps. After Galck got his crisps he heard a scream" I bring darkness"! Galck looked down into a pit and saw a huge dragon monster. The dragon monster was very angry with Galck cause Galck was going to slay his master: The evil Lord Uhh??. So the dragon monster named John tried to mash Galck with his huge hand but Galck used his pocket lamp and glared John. John got so pissed with Galck so he started smashing all around himself which result that a big ROCK loose from the roof aNd ROLLed down from the wall and landed on John's head. John couldn't resist the power of Rock n' Roll so he popped like a balloon. Galck had now defeated the dragon monster John and should've climb up to the edge if he hadn't spotted a store with a sign that said "Uber-Imba-Overpowerweapons and stuff that are useful if you want to slay Lord Uhh??." "Exactly what I needed", said Galck and entered the stored.

The Store was quiet small but full of weapons that probably were Uber.Imba.-Overpower. The storekeeper was not unique or special at any kind as you might have thought. The only thing was that he followed Galck with his eyes wide-opened which made Galck confused so he started: "ehm I'm looking for some Uber-Imba-Overpowerweapons and stuff to slay Lord Uhh??". The storekeeper answered shortly and quickly "ok", and began walking around the store searching for the right gear. After a while had the storekeeper collected all weapons and items that Galck needed. It was over 50 different items and weapons. Galck put all the items down in his backpack. His backpack which from the start was big and round as a football had now grown at least 10 times bigger, and the form of the backpack is indescribable. "And one more thing", Galck heard the storekeeper said. "The strongest weapon I got", he continued and picked up something from his desk drawer. "Behold the most Uber-Imba-Overpowerweapon: The Hammer!" The storekeeper said and showed Galck a really tiny steel hammer. "don't underrate it because of it's size, rate it of it's power, witch is tremendous". "Ok", said Galck and paid the storekeeper and moved on. He took an elevator which lead right into Lord Uhh??'s fortress of chaos, doom, destruction and construction. He was now just outside Lord Uhh??'s fortress of chaos, doom, destruction and construction. Before he entered the fortress he looked at a sign that showed which cave he was at. The sign said "the .... Cave". The big blank space in the middle was too dark too see but it made Galck got a feeling how dark the cave the fortress lied in was.

He now entered the fortress. Galck look at a map witch showed that fortress was quiet small. It was probably thereby Lord Uhh?? has started to a construction project to expand his fortress. He walked through a room until he came to a big wall witch was guarded by two guards. Galck said "move I need to get through". One of the guards pointed a sign that said "Under Construction, no one may enter without permission". "Come on let me in or I'll need to smash this wall down by my bare hands."Good luck, this wall is called the unbreakable wall because it's unbreakable, you can't destroy it", said the guard. "Well I doubt about that", said Galck and picked up the guard and threw him into the wall... And the wall broke. "don't try too fool me, I'm not an idiot, at least I don't think I am". The other guard ran away so it was an open way for Galck to enter Lord Uhh??'s room. Galck just chose the perfect time to kill Lord Uhh?? because all his guards were busy building the fortress. Galck entered a great hall. At the end of the hall was the door to Lord Uhh??'s room. Galck started walking. Just as he started a symphony orchestra (that was placed at the sides of the great hall) play a piece called "the opened way" to make the atmosphere more epic. He finally reached the door. It said "don't disturb" so Galck first thought that it would be stupid to disturb, but he then changed his mind and entered.

Lord Uhh??'s room was formed like a huge round platform hanging out in the air. Galck was now around five thousand meters up in the air. There was no ceiling and no walls so you could see right out in the open, dark and evil sky. At the other side stood the evil Lord Uhh??. Lord Uhh?? was looking out into the dark thunderous sky, but he turned as Galck entered and said "I knew you would come". Galck didn't answer. Lord Uhh?? continued "But you will never defeat me, I'm immortal". "NO!", said Galck threatfully, "you will fall like  you're unbreakable wall". "We'll see", said Lord Uhh??. And the fight began.
Galck picked randomly up a waepon from his back pack while Lord Uhh?? draw his sword and ran towards Galck. The weapon Galck picked up happen to be a huge, huge axe, witch was even bigger than himself. Galck swung the axe rapidly against Lord Uhh?? like the axe just weight much as a leaf. Lord Uhh?? backed a bit by the surprise because the axe was so big, but he later on attacked. The fight was really intense. The attack speed can be compared with a BPN (beat per minute) of 260, but strangely no one manage to get a single hit. But after a while Lord Uhh??'s defense began to fall, and Galck manage to get a great hit with his huge Uber-Imba-Overpoweraxe and Lord Uhh?? got knock backed twenty meters and was back at the position which he stood while Galck entered. "Come on you're weapons are fucking Uber-Imba-Overpower, you cheater!" Said Lord Uhh??". But I will never die, let me show you my true power!" he continued. He stepped back and hawked. He then started singing a three-lined C in an extremely high db-level. Galck felt how he started to vibrate. The tone that Lord Uhh?? sang was almost the same tone as the root note of Galck. He was going to die by destructive resonance. Galck quickly opened his backpack looking for a weapon to counter the attack with. He searched the whole backpack but find nothing useful. He felt how the vibrations grew stronger and stronger. He looked one more time in his backpack and spotted a mirror polished Shield at the bottom. Galck used all his strength to grab it and pointed the mirror polished side against Lord Uhh?? who seemed to get stunned by the tone being reflected. Lord Uhh?? stopped singing. Galck rushed towards Lord Uhh?? who seemed damaged. "ahahahahahaha, you will still never be able to kill me, because I got a divine shield that protects me from death", said Lord Uhh??". "Well I guess I break it then", said Galck with an easy tone, and picked up The Hammer. Lord Uhh?? looked shockingly at The hammer and said "no, no, no, not the hammer, how did you get it, argh you cheater, fucking Uber-Imba-Overpowerweapon!" "Shut up", said Galck and struck The Hammer against Lord Uhh?? and he turned into stone. Galck now gathered all his energy and punched the stoned Lord Uhh?? right in the face to billions, billions billion pieces. Lord Uhh?? was dead.

The evil Lord Uhh?? was destroyed and so was all the evil. Galck watched how the sun appeared and how the great thunderclouds disappeared and how the land smiled by the blessing of the sunlight. And then he died, because he had completed his epic quest he was given and he now flew up in the air towards heaven, but he will always be remembered down on earth as Galck: The great epic Uber-Imba-Overpover hero that saved the lands from the evil.

The End

Hope you enjoyed it!  :)

Quote from: TheMarioPianist on August 17, 2015, 12:00:10 PMI probably led you astray a bit with the piano experience thing. Really, the only thing piano experience does is it allows you to know whether something is playable or not more quickly, rather than having to go to a piano and test it out a bunch of times. Sure, that saves some time, but not nearly as much as a hereditary gift such as absolute (perfect) pitch. Well actually, hereditary isn't quite the word I wanted to use. It is just something that can only be developed during certain time windows, usually by experience with a musical instrument. I can't remember exactly what these windows are, but the best time is having experience before age 3 or so. Its all about brain development and stuff, you can look up more about it if you want to. But anyway, it is a huge timesaver because it allows me to hear melodies or chords only 1 or 2 times and be able to recognize every note being played. I don't have to stop and keep plunking random keys until something "sounds right." You can always develop relative pitch, but I won't get into that here. This is going WAY off topic, I promise my next post will be a submission! :) Anyway, if you have any questions about pitch, arranging speed, or something else, PM me about it so we don't like get people mad at us for cluttering up this thread with non-Animal Crossing stuff!

Remembering for like 3-4 years ago I tried to learn perfect/Absolute pitch. I though that it'd be the ultimate tool for me, as I wanted to be a composer(I only needed a pen and some paper and I could just write down everything I heard in my head). I tried really hard, but all the methods were very vague. Most methods said either that you should try associate a certain note with a certain color or something, or that you should try to associate the note with a song that started on the note. And one of the programs I used, Auralia, had a huge flaw in it's Perfect Pitch training topic: The notes seemed to have different overtones, so I could hear what note it was not because I recognized the pitch but because I recognized the sound, like hearing different instruments. And also, since the notes came after each other successively, it sometimes happen that I used relative pitch to clear the exercise.
It might be possible to learn Perfect Pitch, I'm not sure, or at least get better at hearing different pitches. But But I gave up after a while because I didn't see much of a clear progress, it is much harder to learn than relative pitch. I got a pretty good relative pitch and it's easier to learn probably because you hear 2 or more notes and it's about hearing the relation to the notes, if it sounds dissonant or not etc., while perfect pitch you hear 1 or more notes and you have to know/feel what note it is.

The Formatting Guidelines is all nice, but I think they could need some improvement. Here's some ideas I had in mind, most of them are just clarifications:

Formatting Template:
-Maybe use that template Deku created. I think Bespinben got one. It looks great so I guess it could be used as a a template here. I think it got wider margins and a bit sized down page which seems useful as it can fit a 4 measure hyper measure which frequently is used.
-Also I think it might be a good idea to make it easier finding the template. As of now when it is just in regular text it can easily be missed. My suggestion is either a title like "Template" in bold or understroke, that will probably make it easier for people to find it. And also maybe write something like "with proper formatting", also might make more people use it.
-I think it would be nice with a duet template too (or two, one for 1 piano, and another for 2 pianos).

Title:
-Use official soundtrack titles if possible. If not use the most common title for the song.

Game Name:
-Use American (NTSC) game names as the game name. For games only released in Japan, use translated titles. If the titles differers between American (NTSC) and European (PAL) region, use the American (NTSC) titles.

Composer:
-Try to find the specific composer for the song you've arranged if there were multiple composer composing for a game. If you can find the one, name only that composer since he/she is the one who composed the song. If not, name all composers from the game.
-If the song is an arranged/remixed version of a previously composed song, both the composer of the original song and the arranger of the arranged version should be given credit. For example: Vampire Killer in Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance: Original composition by Satoe Terashima Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance arrangement by Michiru Yamane, and Piano arrangement by ...

Key Signature:
-If a song is atonal. Make the key signature as Open Key signature (no sharps or flats) but place a courtesy neutral at every neutral note. (don't know how necessary this is)

Clefs:
-Only use treble and bass clefs, octave clefs are not allowed.

URL:
-NSM's url: http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/ needs to be included. This goes just under the Copyright.

Duets:
-Duet for 1 piano: Should have "Primo" as first stave and "Secondo" as second stave followed by the abbreviations "I" and "II".
-Duet for 2 pianos: Should have "Piano 1" as the first stave and "Piano 2" as second stave followed with the abbreviations "Pno. 1" and "Pno. 2".

Pedal markings:
-Either write out using signs(Ped. and *) or using lines or using expressions(con ped. senza ped.) for a section or the entire song.
-Other pedals Una corda. and sostenuto are also welcomed if you feel they are befitting. Use "una corda" and "tre corde"/"tutte le corde" for notating the una corda pedal. And use Sost. Ped. and a pedal line, and also diamond-shaped note heads for the notes that are going to be sustained by the sostenuto pedal, for notating the sostenuto pedal.

Pages:
-Try reducing the amount of pages if possible, by resizing pages, fitting more systems on pages and using repeat marks.

Aesthetics:
-If you're using multiple layers make sure that they are beamed so that one layer is beamed upwards and the other one downwards.
-Try to avoid any type of collision if possible. Whether be by stems, beams, slurs, dynamics, expressions etc. This will make your arrangement look more aesthetically appealing.

Finger notation:
-It's not required but appreciated especially during technical parts of a song.

Playability:
-Keep this in mind when arranging. The arrangement must at least be playable, this means no too big intervals and no too fast runs and too big leaps. This doesn't stop your arrangement from being difficult, sometimes the song just happen to be so, but it has to at least be playable.

By that try keeping within an octave reach, and only use higher intervals such as 9ths and 10ths if necessary, you also have to be aware of the speed the big intervals are going to be played, if it's feasible.
When notating fast runs, it's important to be aware if the runs includes double-notes (thirds, fourths, sixths etc.).

If your unsure of your arrangement is playable or too fast, you can look up difficult pieces of Chopin, Liszt and other of classical composers to compare if it's as fast, or if it's too fast. If it's not as fast and technical as those pieces, then an advanced pianist should be able to play your arrangement.

Feedback / Easy Versions Idea
June 14, 2015, 10:16:42 AM
Once I was looking at Jordan Kanpp's arrangement, there was a discussion about whether to include all voices in the fugue, or to omit some for the sake of playability.

And then I wondered if it would be nice to have an option to submit a simplified version of the arrangement. I, and I think other people as well, have come across certain times when you want to keep a voice, arrange it in a certain way, or try to make it sound as much as the original, but when doing so increases the difficulty of the arrangement. And you start wondering whether to keep the voices and make it harder, or omit it for the sake of accessibility.

I'm particularly thinking on popular themes which people recognize well and just want to able to play without too much difficulty. In that case it might frighten people if the arrangement looks too hard, since I think most people visiting the site aren't piano experts. You might say that it's just to omit certain voices, simplify here and there if you like, if you think it's too hard to play. But I think it's more appealing if people open the file and look and then see that it's a doable song to play.

I don't think it's that difficult for arrangers to do either, once you got your "full version", it's just to simplify certain parts for the sake of playability/accessibility. It might not be that much for updaters either, since I'm thinking that the main focus will be on the "full version".

In this way people you'll be able to have one "original version", where you can strive on achieving the best possible arrangement to the song even if that means that there can be fast runs, leaps, multiple voices and other difficult techniques included.
And a "easy version" which is meant to be more accessible, so that people can enjoy playing their favorite video game songs on piano.
Thereby people visiting the site will have options to chose from, so the moderately good pianist can chose the easy version, and the advanced pianist can chose the original version.

Easy Versions Survey

More specific information

I'll write down here more specifically some of the ideas of this new system. Note that these aren't final and can be changed but it is only to give people a grasp about what this could mean if implemented.

The general idea:
  • The site will offer two versions of the same song. One with accuracy as primary aim, whether that result in a difficult arrangement which demands advanced piano technique in order to preform. And a second version with the accessibility as it's primary aim.
  • The difficulty of an easy version will vary from song to song as with regular arrangements, some songs are harder than others.
  • Creating simplified arrangements should be optional, not required.
Other options, which hasn't been discussed:
  • Being able to make an simplified arrangement of a duet (one or two pianos)
Submission form is to be discussed. But some ideas discussed are:
  • Being able to submit a simplified arrangement along side your regular arrangement.
  • Being able to submit 2 regular submissions and 1 simplified.
The credit for a simplified arrangement is being discussed but here are some of the options:
  • Credit for a simplified version will go to the arranger of the full version.
  • Credit for a simplified version will go to the arranger of the full version, but the arranger who simplified can write "simplified by ...".
  • Credit for a simplified version will go the arranger who simplified the arrangement.
Replacing an easy version:
  • Being able to replace a simplified arrangement, like regular arrangements.
  • Credit? Who get's credit for a replaced version?

Discussion and Arguments

Since the discussion has been running for a while I'd like to list some argument pro and against, some of which has been discussed but also some of great concern for the issue.

Pro:

  • Creates more options for the piano enthusiasts visiting the site as they now can chose from two difficulties. If they find the full version too difficult they can choose the easy version and still enjoy playing their favorite tunes. And if you're an experienced pianist you can still enjoy playing your favorite songs as accurate as possible for the piano.
  • Can give the site more popularity. With implementing this the site might receive greater popularity, since people after enjoying playing their favorite tunes in a simplified version might become members or recommend the site to friends.
  • Target the average visitors, people who enjoy gaming and piano playing. I'm not really sure what the average visitor is, in terms of piano experience, but if this is true then this argument can be heavy.
  • Easy to implement. Since simplifying an arrangement doesn't require the work as arranging, it won't be too difficult for arrangers to do, and neither for updaters to review.

Against:
  • Can risk the quality standards. As the site have grown to having high quality and accurate arrangements, this new arrangement form can risk the quality and accuracy standards the site has.
  • It's unnecessary since people can simplify for themselves. It's only more work for arrangers and updaters, and simplifying isn't a too difficult task for even a moderately good pianist.
  • Delays updates/submission process and requires more work for updaters. The updates are at times very slow already, and implementing this will only make them even slower plus having more work for updaters, which cannot be a good thing for the site.
  • Takes time to implement. Lots of things needs to be considered for this to work properly, which makes it hard to implement, and therefore a less attractive idea.
  • Infringement on arrangements. Some arrangers might be picky with their arrangements, and might not be pleased with the simplified version of their arrangement.

Help! / Forum Problem with ctrl+F5
May 30, 2015, 01:24:38 PM
Hi there has been some discussion on the the "Post Your Thoughts of the Moment Thread 2". Seems like the forum has been messed up for some people (that pressed ctrl+F5, because they thought it would fix something when the site updated or something). So there exist some problems with the forum, for example you can't quick reply, view emotes, reply with emotes, different text sizes, colors etc.

So I'm wondering, is there anyone who knows how to fix this, like if you have change certain settings?? If not and it's a "forum problem", are the updaters, like maybe Jamaha, aware of the problem, and are working on it??

Help! / Exporting PDFs VS Printing PDFs
May 19, 2015, 12:03:57 PM
Hi I wonder what's the best way of creating pdfs. Is it by exporting pdfs, or by printing and selecting your pdf-program as a printer, in my case PDFCreator?? One problem printing solves is that sometimes when I export certain pdfs they get exported with an error: that "3's" from triplets are wandering around, usually at the bottom of the pages, and that problem doesn't occur using printing. But other than that is there any differences??

Help! / Finale articulation question
May 17, 2015, 11:59:10 AM
Hi I wonder if there are some neat way to create a mordent with a flat/sharp/neutral? Like this one:
I've been looking around in different fonts, but I can't seem to find one, does anyone knows if it's possible??
#36
I've just noticed that in the Formatting Guidelines, the template by Purple1222119 got the wrong(the old) URL. We should probably fix this, if anyone decides to use it, and it should be quite simple task to do.

Also I wonder which Page sizes you can use? I looked at Bespinben's arrangement of Mysterious Woods from Zelda: Link's Awakening, and it's in "portrait" shape. Is it OK to use that?? We should also include this in the Formatting Guidelines: Which Page Sizes/Shapes you can use.

Help! / 8va and 8vb problem
May 13, 2015, 04:35:18 PM
In one of arrangements I'm having to use both 8va and 8vb, however I don't know how to do this in Finale(full version 2014). I know I can change whether to make it 8va or 8vb, but in this case I need both. How do I make it?

Help! / Various music questions
May 06, 2015, 08:11:05 AM
I have some questions I want to know the answer to:

1) Does a grace note have to has it's stem/beam upwards? I've only seen those with upward stems.
2) How do you write a reverse trill?? like a trill with the notes B-A-B-A etc.?
3) If you have a song in 7/8, do you always have to mark tempo as 8ths or as quarter+quarter+dotted quarter? I wonder since I have song where marking it as 8ths looks way too fast, and marking it as quarter+quarter+dotted quarter makes it way too slow. I have it marked as quarter=87, but I don't know if it's ok? Here is the song: [ZIP]
Spoiler
4) if I'm making a song in C major, but at one time have a Ab with a upper mordent above it, does that mean that it's supposed to be played Ab-Bb-Ab or Ab-A-Ab or Ab-B-Ab?

5) If I have a song with the parts A B and C. In part B there is a repeat bracket, and in part C there is a note "D.S. al fine" which leads to a Segno in part A. My question is: After playing till part C when you go back to the Segno in part A, should you still play through the repeat bracket in part B one more time, or should you ignore them??

6) Are the key signatures C#-major and Cb-major(containing 7#/b's) correct, and if so, are they ever necessary??

7) What are the differences between the > accent and the ^ accent?? Or is there any? I've heard some people saying the ^ accent is shorter than the > accent, and others saying the ^ is stronger than the > accent. So I'm not sure about the differences.

Help! / Question about copyright
May 03, 2015, 02:49:20 PM
Hi I want to make my copyrights correct. But I wonder what I shall write in the copyright section.
For example: Super Smash Bros. Melee
On the wikipedia page it says that Hal Labratory is the developer, and that Nintendo is the Publisher.
The question then is: Which one should I put in the copyright section, or should I put both??
