Home-Made Compositions / Re: Yew's Compositions and Other Things

Thanks for your comments. Yeah, I know the clarinet and oboe stuff is really challenging. Especially because I just kind of throw it in their faces after a bunch of easy stuff. I've been going to a lot of region and state clinics, though, and the clarinets (at least in Arkansas) have insane audition materials. I didn't want to make it that challenging, but at least throw a few challenging things in. I do need to rework those scale runs in the end, to see if I can get the same effect, because that would be insane on clarinet. I don't think the oboe part is as challenging as you seem to, though. The runs in 54 are the only oboe issue I can see, and that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Maybe its just me.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying about the second one. Have you heard the song from the game? I kind of wanted to add some counter-melodies to make it more interesting, and the clarinet one should really stay subtle for those eighth notes in the bass instruments to be brought out more. Its hard for me to get good bass support in finale. All of the bass instruments just kind of whisper, so I have to write the parts differently than I actually should to get them to stick out more. What do you think of the counter-melodies in the first clarinet and flute? Here's a link to the original, if you want it for comparison:

Hm. I feel like I like the idea of the piece more than I like what's actually been written down. Your melodies and such are nice, but it seems really... thin. Like if you had more going on it sound a lot better. The overall idea and melody is great, but I feel like it could be elaborated, or use more instruments, like Dahans said.

Also, about the instrumentation. Why are you using a bass tuba? Regular tubas can hit those notes just fine. And what mallet instrument is the mallet part supposed to be? Just wondering. I always hate how I can't get the right mallet instruments without Allegro or Full Finale. Also, flute will not be heard that low. Especially if other instruments are playing the same part. It wouldn't be an issue in a solo or woodwind ensemble, but with a trumpet playing the same octave, piano playing the same, lower, and higher octaves, and that tuba, and accented no less, flute will not be heard in that low range.

And one last thing, why are there slurs over notes that have rest in between them? That's not possible. Not on wind instruments.

Alright, so I'm a novice composer. Nice to meet you. Firstly, I'd like to upload my composition I first used for TMS.  A small ensemble consisting of and Oboe, a Bb Soprano Clarinet, and a String Quartet. I was aiming for a 'pastoral', happy feeling.

And secondly, a woodwind choir arrangement of The Stone Tower Temple. There's a lot more to it, and I've barely started with the second half of the melody, but this is what I have so far.

These were written with Finale Printmusic 2011. I've provided MIDIs for those without the latest reader.
So, any comments? Criticism will be very much appreciated.

Eww Ruby and Sapphire.

Do you have a problem with ruby and sapphire?

I like most of those names. Except I don't see why they couldn't call Gear... well, Gear. Klink isn't much better.

Luigi's Mansion. I probably would have picked Super Princess Peach if I hadn't lost the game halfway through :(

Yoshi's Island deserves honorable mention, though.

The Minish Cap, definitely. I loved Spirit Tracks, but I'd rather have an overworld to travel through than train tracks. I definitely like Spirit Track's story and gameplay a little better, though, but the train travel is the deciding factor.

Pan-Some biology classification that monkeys belong to that I don't remember enough about to name

So yeah

I think he was reffering to the bugs that gave you the Tears of Light  :P

The Triforce Quest itself wasn't that bad, but getting the rupees to translate the triforce charts is a frikken pain.

It was a tough choice between WW and MM, but I picked MM. WW just had so many teeny flaws (and the triforce quest).

I like the christmas arrangement! A few little nitpicky things though

1. Is there a difference between glockenspiel and bells? 'Cause just one of them could play both parts just fine.

2. Sixteenth notes on tubular bells? Yikes. I'd hate to be attempting that.

3. I'm not sure they make tubular bells that have the range you wrote. I've only ever seen them from C4 to F5.

4. Some of those flute parts are pretty low. It could be pretty hard to here them there. Also, The part that contains the C7 (132 to 148) would be easier and would probably sound better on piccolo.

Oh don't worry, I'll give you all plenty of reasons to eat me.

And sometimes I prefer Paper Mario to Zelda. Depends on the day, really.

Born: A.D. 303
Lives in: Arkansas
Religion: Atheist/Agnostic
Hobbies: Music, Reading, Writing
Sport: Ech

Favorite music genre: Not really a favorite. I do have a preference for popular music that doesn't suck (read: very little popular music)
Series: Glee. Don't judge.
Movies: Requiem for a Dream, Anything Pixar
Anime: FMA. I like Yu Yu Hakusho but haven't had much time to watch it.
Favorite genre: RPG, RTS
Favorite game: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Favorite game at the moment: Dragon Quest IX

Instruments I Can Play Well: Flute, Percussion

Instruments I Have the Ability to Play but May or May Not Have the Ability to Play Well: Bassoon, Oboe, Saxophone

So yeah that's me in a nutshell.

I'm in tenth grade, I've made all-region on percussion twice, this year will be my first to audition in high school and on flute, I occasionally compose (badly), I like anime but don't have the time for it because it isn't necessarily awesome, I am on the left side of the political spectrum but will not allow my mind to be clouded by "republicans are bad", I am odd but don't pride myself (necessarily) in being so because too many people like to brag about how wierd they are.

And Majora's Mask is better than Ocarina of Time.

Yeah I said it.
