Music / Is it bad that I can't get into classical music?
September 28, 2012, 06:11:00 PM
I see a lot of people on this forum posting their favorite pieces, discussing their favorite composers and techniques, etc. I don't know if it's because I was just never exposed to classical music frequently or what, but I just don't see the big appeal. I understand on a larger level that our modern music theory is derived from those periods, and I have a genuine appreciation for this, but I just can't get into the music itself.

Music / I feel like college is destroying me.
January 11, 2012, 08:06:05 PM
I posted a while back my frustrations with having to take aural theory class. I managed to pull a 'B' in it, but now I'm in another semester. Do you guys hate how repetitive college is too? Working your butt off for finals and doing well, only to have another semester to go? It just seems like it'll never end.

And on top of that, I found out that I can't even be a music major, despite my great grades in theory classes, since the auditions are both required and competitive. They said most people entering the program have played their instrument for 10 years. :(    Now I have to figure out if it's worth transferring to a college where you do not need to audition, or if I should stay here and change majors, effectively killing my dream. Oh, and I just got diagnosed with freaking Asperger's Syndrome. Wish I had known that growing up.

Feedback / Message System is weird.
September 27, 2011, 05:04:50 PM
I'm not too pleased with the current message system. It gets the job done, but it basically just lists all your messages with no type of organization. Maybe I missed something though.

Music / Recommended keyboard/synth?
September 09, 2011, 12:34:39 PM
I'm looking for a sub-$600 keyboard that will be good for inputting notes on the computer, as well as serve as a good practice keyboard. I do not want a Casio or Yamaha. The Roland Juno Di seems to be a great option, but I'd like to see what else is out there. Thanks.

Turns out it's literally a 75 minute sight singing practice session (exact words of the professor). I can't sing as is, but having to come to the front of the class (and sometimes doing partner sessions face to face) is really awkward and embarrassing for me. It's mainly Solfege (Do-Re-Mi, etc). I really want to be a game music composer one day, but is this even helpful to know?

Feedback / When to use certain tone colors?
July 29, 2011, 09:13:36 PM
When I'm listening to orchestral pieces, everything sounds "right" or professional quality. But, whenever I try doing something, I feel like I don't effectively know when to implement the right tone colors (woodwinds, especially). Any advice?

Just curious if anyone here has contributed to their project since there are so many talented composers and arrangers here. If you haven't heard of them, you might want to click their link below and listen to a couple of their works.

Music / A career in music composition?
June 11, 2011, 09:20:25 PM
I'm just wondering if any of you are actually in college studying music and want to pursue a career in that field. I'm curious to know if you are hobbyists or what exactly. I'm thinking about making the leap and changing my major to music composition, but I'm just scared that there wouldn't be a job for me when I graduate because of the economy.

Music / Musical Inspiration/Motivation?
July 21, 2010, 10:27:45 AM
So I'm having this problem. When I listen to compositions and arrangements (any genre), my mind goes wild. I start humming bass lines, countermelodies, etc, harmonizing and creating things that sound really good. But when I try to compose in Finale or w/e program, all of that goes down the drain and I have zero motivation to continue and normally just quit after a few minutes. I'd love to arrange for NSM, but I'm having this problem. Any way to help?

Help! / How can I change my username?
June 25, 2010, 08:01:49 PM
I went to my profile settings and saw the place that said "name users see you as" or something like that, but it wouldn't let me change it. Do I need a higher post count, or is that feature just disabled on here?

Music / I'm ordering Finale 2011...
June 25, 2010, 06:01:23 AM
So I'll be able to help arrange this summer. I'm actually getting it for a great price ($219 via academic discount on eBay). Anyone have some tips about using Finale?

Music / Good place to learn Music Theory?
June 02, 2010, 05:09:03 PM
I just graduated from high school and now have about three months off. I want to use this time productively and learn more about music theory and composition so I can help this site out by making arrangements. Where are some good places to study it online? I've been using musictheory.net, but I was hoping to find something less boring and more fun. Thanks guys.

Help! / A few music questions
January 26, 2010, 04:57:29 AM
1) What program do most people on here use? I know Finale, I'm just not sure which version.

2) Which is better, Sibelius 6 or Finale 2010? I'm thinking about buying one.

3) What are some general tips for a beginning composer like myself?

Thanks.
