Hello, updaters! Just my luck, I have several sheets that fit this theme. Here are my two personal favorite "hot" sheets:

470th

[NDS] Kirby: Squeak Squad - "Vocal Volcano"

461st

[PC] Annalynn - "Lava Factory"

Here is the source for Lava Factory's "Round Clear" fanfare

This is exciting, I've been aching for another special project for a while now. Here's to hoping it goes well! :D

Forum Games / Continue the Story!
May 05, 2023, 09:45:05 AM
Yesterday, a few other NSMers and I were fooling around in the Discord server, giving ChatGPT some prompts to write about. Along the way, I asked it to generate a story about a showdown between members of the community and a band of "Nintendo ninjas" (idea credit to Bramblebear), and it produced some pretty amusing results. Some of the pronouns were wrong, since I hadn't specified them during the prompt, but for an AI story, it was a fairly entertaining read. However, an error occurred it and stopped producing the story, leaving it on a cliffhanger; when I asked it to pick up where it left off, the AI got confused and took things in a different direction, unrelated to the story it had already produced. So now, at the suggestion of Latios, we're going to start something new! Write new stuff about what happened after the previous post, and keep it alive for as long as possible! It doesn't matter where the story leads, as long as we keep it going. I'll start by pasting in the original material:

As the group from NinSheetMusic continued to play, they suddenly heard a loud commotion outside the door. They soon found themselves facing a group of black-clad figures, each wielding a sword and wearing a red and white emblem on their chest - the Nintendo Ninjas.

"Stop right there!" one of the ninjas shouted. "You've been violating Nintendo's copyright by creating arrangements of their music without permission! We're here to shut you down!"

JasCas stepped forward, her fingers still poised over the piano keys. "We're just a group of fans who love video game music," she protested. "We're not making any money off of this, and we're not hurting anyone."

The lead ninja snorted. "Tell that to our lawyers. Now surrender your arrangements and come with us, or face the consequences."

Bramblebear stepped up beside JasCas, cracking his knuckles. "You think you can take us? We're the best musicians on this side of the internet. Let's see what you've got."

The ninjas charged forward, their swords flashing in the light. But the NinSheetMusic crew was ready for them. Woofpro leapt up from behind his drum set, wielding a pair of drumsticks like nunchucks. Atcero whipped out his guitar, shredding a blistering solo that sent shockwaves through the room. Latios summoned a gust of wind with a wave of his flute, sending the ninjas tumbling.

Static joined in with his bass guitar, laying down a funky groove that shook the very foundation of the building. Maelstrom twirled his violin bow like a staff, knocking aside any ninjas who got too close. LeviR.star pounded away at the keyboard, sending out a wave of pure sound that knocked the ninjas off their feet.

The battle raged on, with the NinSheetMusic crew holding their own against the relentless assault of the Nintendo Ninjas. But just when it seemed like the fight would never end, a voice called out from the doorway.

So, what are you waiting for?

Help Guides / Making Your Own MIDI Dumps
April 01, 2022, 09:59:28 PM
Let's face it, folks; making your own sheets is hard! You gotta find the original source, open the engraving software of your choice, transcribe the music from the source note by note... it's far too tedious, not to mention time-consuming. Who even has time for that? Nobody, that's who. But never fear, because there's a secret technique lost to time, one practiced in the ancient days of NinSheetMusic; what is it, you ask? I'll tell you: it's called...

MIDI DUMPING

Why waste your time creating an arrangement from scratch when there's an entire internet full of readily available MIDIs to claim as your own? Once you've mastered MIDI dumping, you can produce your own sheet music in minutes, without having to deal with that pesky transcription process everybody hates. So follow me, fellow NSMer! Because I'm about to teach you the fabulous art of...

MIDI DUMPING

... *ahem* Let's begin!

MIDI Dumping - Step by Step Tutorial

1. Finding MIDIs | A great MIDI dump begins with a great MIDI. But where to find one?

There's lots of places to find them, really. Personally, I like to consult good ol' VGMusic.com, but Kingdom Hearts Insider is a pretty nice resource as well. "What should I do if I can't find the MIDI I want to make into my own arrangement?" No worries! Check out this handy Online Audio to MIDI Converter tool—I think all MIDIs ought to be made this way, but that's just me. If you're pirati- I mean, borrowing a song from YouTube, go ahead and use YTMP3 to convert the video into a downloadable MP3 file.

You cannot view this attachment.

See? Easy as pie! Now, onto the next step:

2. Importing MIDIs | Now that you've got the MIDI you want to turn into a sheet, it's time to import it into your engraving software. Finale is preferable, but if you use other software, like MuseScore, that's okay, it just makes you objectively inferior. As long as you can import MIDIs, you can make a dump.

Now, you'd think bringing them into Finale (which you should be using,) starts with clicking on the "Import" option, but this isn't the case! Instead, you're gonna want to bring up your File Explorer menu on Windows (which you should be using,) and simply click "Open" on the MIDI you intend to dump. Next, it'll bring up another menu with options; apparently, the staff here at NinSheetMusic don't allow solo piano arrangements with three or more staves because it's "physically impossible to play", so make sure the resulting file you produce has only two. You'll know it's working when it brings up a "MIDI File Status" window, so just sit back and let the computer work its magic.

You're almost there, my friend! There's one last step in the process...

3. Making MIDIs into Sheets | As you can see, your MIDI has now turned itself into readable notes on the page. Hobbyists on the Internet always produce faithful transcriptions for their MIDIs, and the converters are plenty reliable, so there's no need to check to see how your sheet sounds; that's the updaters' job, after all. We're not done yet, though, because we need to fill out some information to make our sheet complete. At the top of the first page, enter the title, composer, and arranger (that's you. You did all the importing, right?) At the bottom of the same page, enter the publisher and release year for the copyright info. If you don't know this stuff off the top of your head, just guess. Nobody really cares about being credited, y'know.

You cannot view this attachment.

You cannot view this attachment.

Will you look at that! With just one easy tutorial, you've already mastered MIDI dumping, which means you're ready to share your sheet music with the world! Making arrangements used to be boring and far too difficult, but now anyone can do it, even you, ya dingus! So what are you waiting for? Go check out our submissions guide and get those up on the site already! All your hard work has finally paid off. :)

Hello, everyone! As you probably know, Nintendo just announced at their most recent Nintendo Direct that we'd be getting a "Booster Course Pack" DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which will bring back a bunch of classic courses (or "retro tracks" if you're stuck in the old terminology, like me) into the game! It's this newfound hype that inspired me to put together a little somethin'-somethin', and I call it...

The Unofficial Mario Kart Fulfillment Project

(Apologies, I'm no good with names. At least it gets the point across, right?)

While I daydreamed about which classic courses they'd be porting from Tour remaking for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I realized just how irregular our sheet coverage is across the series (with a particular disdain for games like Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart 7). So, I've taken it upon myself to put together a list of course themes from the "mainline" games that we're missing, with a couple miscellaneous themes thrown in for good measure. I've made sure to include proposed sheets for classic course remixes (ex. GBA Ribbon Road), along with justification for each one as to why I think they need their own sheets. This means that I not only need your help arranging, but I also want to hear your feedback on this list! The more input, the better.

Enough babbling, here's the list I wrote up:

jesus that's a long list
[SNES] Super Mario Kart

Ghost Valley - XiaoMigros

GCN Luigi's Mansion (instead of reusing the music from Bowser's Castle like the original did, this version is now an arrangement of "Luigi's Mansion" from Mario Kart DS)
Urchin Underpass (uses rearrangements of "Splattack!" and "Now or Never!" from Splatoon (duh); the latter of the two plays once one minute remains during a match)

[MOB] Mario Kart Tour

London Loop
Vancouver Velocity - Cashwarrior1

If you'd like to contribute to this cause, please post in the thread which sheets you'd like to try and take care of, and if you already have in-progress sheets you're willing to finish, make sure to mention those, too. I'll see to it that this post gets updated regularly, and as long as I'm around here, that's a promise. Now, here's a color code for each sheet's status:

Black: Not arranged, nor claimed; it's pretty much yours for the taking
Orange: Not arranged, but is claimed and, presumably, in-progress
Purple: Arranged, but in need of edits; may be claimed with permission
Blue: Arranged and in a suitable shape, but not on-site (yet...)
Lime Green: Arranged and on-site, and therefore, finished. Well done!

What are you waiting for? Don't just stand there, get claimin', get arrangin', but for God's sake, do somethin'!

I submitted this a while ago, but archived it in favor of a Dragon Quest III sheet, amidst the hype of the remake's announcement.

Here's the boss theme, "Devil's Resurrection", from the laughably bad Haunted Castle! I hope to have this entire OST on-site some day.

[DROPBOX LINK TO SHEET]

Nothing too special here, folks; just an old sheet. I won't be arranging anything new until my Work-In-Progress folder is empty. So, in search of the most Halloween-y sheet already in my PA, I found this. Can't get much spookier than Castlevania, I always say.

There's not much to say about this one, other than something about the second-to-last measure being pretty hard to play. But I've done my best to write it out fairly, so there's what I've got for now. If there's any questions out there, don't be a f r a a a i i i d to ask!

Help! / Moving Finale Program Files/Deleted Files?
October 04, 2019, 09:46:07 AM
It has come to my attention recently that, given my arrangement rate, I have about a year or so before I run out of Dropbox space and will be forced to pay for the upgrade. Looking over my contents, I realized I had all of my Finale program file folders saved on Dropbox, and could save a lot of space by moving them to my computer. How would I go about moving these files to my hard drive without altering anything important, or changing where Finale locates its files in order to operate?

Also, yesterday, while moving my game folders into categorized folders by franchise, Dropbox gave me several desktop notifications that files "have been deleted", often with 4-5 files at a time. This has occurred before, but I don't understand what's happening; is it deleting actual files, discarding duplicate files, or removing shared access and essential destroying links just because I'm moving file locations? Please help me comprehend what's going on here.

Feedback / New Submission Feature(s) Request
July 14, 2019, 03:47:23 PM
Hello, NSM. Over the few years that I have been on this site, I have developed an appreciation for the relatively new submission system, and I am still grateful for it, as well as the fact that I joined after it was put into effect. However, with the recent change in staff over the past year, I have become concerned for the cycle, and would like to propose a couple of changes/additions to the system, in order to possibly improve the overall cycle of sheet-accepting, for both new and veteran arrangers:

YouTube Link Embedding

It's a common problem that needs to be addressed with newcomers: YouTube links need to be pasted into a submission topic, so that the updaters don't need to go looking for the songs themselves. But even for some that come to the site and read the rules before doing anything, they fail to paste the link; when an updater kindly reminds them, some take it the wrong way and are put off by the request. When the YouTube link isn't present for the updaters, they can't check it when they want to, and this slow the process down.

But I think this can be easily remedied. If a new feature when submitting was added so that a sheet cannot be finalized without pasting in a link, this would never be a problem again. An embedded link would replace the usual first reply in the topic, but would still be able to be opened by anyone. A two-step process of submitting work would be reduced to one, just like that, benefiting both the arrangers and the updaters.

Credit Information Requirement

I believe that crediting the right people should be a higher priority than we put it at. Right now, it's as if the only people that point out errors like these are just fans of the games involved, and notice the small mistakes easier than others. Yes, some games have better resources for credit information than others, but this shouldn't be an excuse to correct inaccuracies only when prompted by prior knowledge. We need a better system for making sure this information can easily be checked.

I propose that before submitting a sheet, the Composers, Additional Arrangers, Developers, Publishers, and Initial Release Date should all be researched and listed to insure these bloopers don't go unnoticed. This way, the sheet cannot be submitted incomplete, and with everything displayed in one place in the topic, the updaters can verify the credits in an easier, quicker way. Lastly, the release date requirement will save updaters the trouble of entering it in themselves later.

Email-Bumping

We all know what an updater bumping a submission means: one of them or a fellow arranger decided to give you some feedback to push your submission closer to acceptance, and you haven't responded to it yet (for a long time, likely,) so you're getting a nice little nudge. This either means that A.) You read the feedback but told yourself "I'll address it later" (and never did), B.) You hit the "MARK ALL MESSAGES AS READ" button and never noticed you had any feedback, or C.) You're not as active in the NSM community as some others, and you unintentionally drifted away from the site while someone took the time to help you. Some newcomers don't understand how this forum works, and don't find out when someone replies in their topic. And some truly wonderful sheets over the years have been archived because the arrangers forgot to take care of what they started. While this doesn't prevent them from submitting the same sheet again, it's a issue that doesn't have to exist. There's a better way to remind arrangers to fix their sheets.

Bumping would be a lot more universal if the updaters' system was to incorporate an automatic email reminder to send out, instead of bumping in the topic, where they're less likely to see it. This shouldn't be too hard to implement, given that we already have personal messages that automatically send a copy to the user's email. This is what I'm picturing:

Something like this
You cannot view this attachment.
[close]

It's not intimidating, and it can reach out to an arranger better than a post in a topic, even if they momentarily forgot about their involvement on the site. Simple as that!

If my above suggestions are added to the Submission system, the process will:

- move more efficiently
- insure accuracy
- make sheet assessment noticeable

These plans may not make updates occur more often, but I at least wish for everyone to have an easier time being involved in the sheet acceptance process, newcomers and old-timers alike; we can have more than just the regular arrangers involved in updates! Please understand that this isn't a list of demands, so please, staff, give me your thoughts on how well these concepts and ideas might work, or how they might be fleshed out/revised.

Help! / Alternating Bass Line
June 01, 2019, 06:44:49 PM
Hello, everyone. I hate to create an entirely new topic for a singular sheet, but this kind of problem isn't going to be fixed in my PA.

Some here might remember my earlier days when I submitted this sheet, which made it to the site. But there was a problem with the song that I made note of in this help topic, because it has the same melody over three different basslines, the third of which repeats indefinitely. Here are different rips of the song (notice how the first video, the non-extended version, is strangely cut off at the end):

In the first help topic, Olimar offered to help me with the sheet, and did so by editing it with his own files with a customized MIDI, which ended up looking (and sounding) like this: [GB] Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge - "Wily Stage 1"

Now, as much as I appreciated his help, he created the re-write using knowledge I didn't have at the time, and I still don't completely understand it. The MIDI is ridiculously long, but it's almost completely accurate to the original song. All I know is that I want to update the on-site version with a brand new draft (looks like this now)

This song is completely unconventional to the soundtrack of classic Mega Man, and even to the rest of this game's OST; I'm not even sure writing it out as the true original will be easy for performers to play. Should the new version on site be a cleaned up, re-worked version of Olimar's soundtrack-accurate draft, or my own, with one bass line? Either way, I'd like to update the files sometime.

Hello there! It's been talked about outside of the forums, but I'd like to start a little experiment/game here for arrangers.

The objective: arrange sheets of the same 4 songs of varying complexities for piano, and compare resulting sheets with each others'. Not all 4 are required.

The four different sheets (yet to be determined... somehow) As we will not assuming integrity in arranging, the sheet must not be on-site already; c'mon, there's plenty of fish in the sea.

1. A Chiptune Song (NES, GB, MS, etc.)
2. A SNES/N64 Song? {Currently being debated}
3. An Orchestrated Song (from compressed .mp3s, i.e. GameCube on up)

- [SWITCH] Super Mario Odyssey - "Fossil Falls"

4. A "Difficult-to-Notate" Song

This experiment/game will only be for you to join if you can finish the sheets without help. The main point is to see how arrangers' styles differ and what their strengths & weaknesses are.

Before we vote on the songs to choose, I'd like to open up suggestions from anyone else in the forums. The more input, the more solidified this can be.

Welcome! Since all the facts I learn pertaining to games seem to not have a good place to find, I've decided to create one for them!

I'll try my best to find 5 per day.

Day 1

- Game Boy Advance Video cartridges are incompatible with the Game Boy Player, in order to protect from copying
- the original arcade version of Donkey Kong has only been re-released through Donkey Kong 64 since the 1990 lawsuit concerning the game's source code
- Kirby Super Star was originally planned to have a sub-game where Kirby would navigate a haunted mansion, cursed with the inability to open his mouth. This idea may have been the inspiration behind Milky Way Wishes's Copy Essence Deluxes
- Street Fighter X Mega Man was originally conceived as a fan game, until Capcom encouraged its developer and assisted with the production Street Fighter X Mega Man was just a fan game, until Capcom realized they'd forgotten to do anything for Mega Man's 25th anniversary and hastily made it an official release to cover their asses
- a port of Frogger was the last game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, released in 1998, the same year as the Dreamcast's initial release
