Music / Is King Hippo's intro theme based on anything?
December 21, 2016, 01:22:24 PM
I've been trying to figure this out for a long time: Is King Hippo's theme from Punch-Out!! (NES) based on any pre-existing song?

Most of the other boxers have intro music that either comes from or is inspired by their country of origin (Sakura, Sakura for Piston Honda, Song of the Volga Boatmen for Soda Popinski, etc.), but I cannot for the life of me figure out if that also applies to King Hippo's little waltz. It's clearly not from the Pacific Islands, it sounds more like something Strauss or Tchaikovsky would write.

It very well could be an original song, but if anyone recognizes it, let me know. I'm at a loss here.

Hey everyone! It's been a long time. I'm hoping to get back into arranging soon, but until then I've started putting arrangements up on my new YouTube channel. I just put up my first piano OST there, The Mysterious Murasame Castle. I'm looking to put a lot more up there in the coming weeks and months, so I'd appreciate anyone heading over to check it out! They'll include arrangements of songs both on the site and off, so if you're interested give them a look.
They are just MIDI though, which is why I'm not posting this in the performance thread. I'm not really able to record myself live quite yet. But those looking for piano arrangements of old-school soundtracks, I want to make this a strong resource.

Thanks, and I look forward to arranging again!

Feedback / Piano Duet? Four Hands? Making a suggestion
December 28, 2015, 06:37:05 AM
Hey everyone;
I've been making some piano duet arrangements lately and I've noticed something odd about the site with how it labels duets, and I'd like to make a suggestion so that it's less confusing.
Normally, "Piano Duet" can refer to either two players on one piano, or two players on two pianos. I see that the site uses "Two Pianos" for the latter, which works well ("piano duo" might be more common, but I agree with using "two pianos").

For two players on one piano, I've almost always seen "Piano four hands" or just "Four Hands".
I feel that seeing "Piano Duet" and "Two Pianos" next to each other on the site can be confusing, especially for newer players who might not know the difference at first. If I may, I suggest replacing "Piano Duet" with "Four Hands", which would A. help distinguish it from "two pianos" and B. be more familiar to people new to the site.

I don't know if this discussion has come up before, but I think it would a good change overall. Let me know what you think about it.

Help! / Is this type of arrangement okay for the site?
December 03, 2015, 10:13:52 AM
I made an arrangement of the "Water Town" theme from Shantae, but felt that it needed a little something more.
So I added in an arrangement of the similar "Sky" theme from Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (which is based on "Water Town") to give it a bit more variety.

My question is: how does NSM feel about mixing songs from different games? In this case, the songs are nearly identical, but I'd like to check here before submitting it.

Here are links (from my arrangements thread):

Thought some of you might get a kick out of this.

I'm working on some remixes on my own time, and am about to start on one of Cape Claw from Star Fox Adventures. I have the percussion and melodies written out just fine, but the choir is vexing me. It's mixed to sound distant, with the high ends cut out and a tonne of reverb, so it's difficult for me to get an accurate transcription with the programmes I own.

I'm wondering if anyone out there is willing to help unravel this. Again, I'm just looking for a musical transcription of the choir part, though if someone is able to suss out the lyrics as well I wouldn't complain.

Here's an alternate version, the original from Dinosaur Planet. It's pretty similar, but mixed a little differently so it might be preferable to some.

Thanks to anyone willing to help me out on this!

Cheers! WandringMinstrel here. Here are the arrangement projects that I am working on or have finished. I like arranging 8-bit soundtracks (NES, Famicom, Game Boy), so that's going to be most of what you see here. I'll include links to the files I've finished.
