Title: The NSM Ultimate Ranking Topic
Post by: BlackDragonSlayer on August 04, 2017, 05:24:19 AM
Due to NSM's list-organizing tendencies, this topic is where you can rank whatever you want. Whenever you want. Go wild.

Shameless ripoff of LLF's Ultimate Ranking Topic (https://last-life.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3782).

Favorite movies:
1. The Apartment
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. No Country for Old Men

Then it's a mash of 12 Angry Men (57'), Shawshank, Godfather, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut, and Bonnie and Clyde.

Greatest Films (in my opinion):

3D-Animated: Up

Animated: The Great Mouse Detective

Live-Action: It's A Wonderful Life

These opinions may change over time.

3D-Animated: Up
I think Up has gotten a lot of backlash from people who are like "the first 10 minutes of the film is amazing, but the rest is awful and boring," and I completely disagree as well! While it's not my favorite Pixar film, I'd consider it solidly consistent overall and has one of the most terrifying (and actually quite sad) Pixar antagonists.

Animated: The Great Mouse Detective
Definitely a really underappreciated film.

Quote
Live-Action: It's A Wonderful Life
For some reason, my dad hates this film and thinks it's incredibly boring. He does a pretty funny George Bailey impression, though. :P

The best live-action film of all time is Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this is a factual statement and cannot be argued against
the second best is The Princess Bride

Unrelated, but this came up:
Ranking of soundtracks for the first 6 (for me):

1. (Best) 2
2. 6
3. 3
4. 4
5. 1
6. 5

I won't rank all 10 until I finish 7 (stuck on Guts Man G), but 7 and 9 have catchy soundtracks.

EDIT: wait this isn't the ranking topic
oh damn you put that edit in there and i didn't notice
Anyways, my Mega Man Classic series soundtrack ranking (not including MM&B or the GB titles):
1. 5
2. 6
3. 3
4. 2
5. 7
6. 9 (a lot of it is really, really samey to me)
7. 1
8. 10 (would probably be below 4 if the Mega Man Killer stage themes and Cybersheep's Dream weren't in here)
9. 4
10. 8 (but it's not really hot garbage)
[close]

EDIT: oh screw it now it's on my mind
here's the X series too, not including both Xtremes (they'd be at the bottom) or Command Mission (that soundtrack's lit tho)
1. X5
2. X6 (amazing for the messy game it comes from)
3. X4
4. X7 (surprisingly really good even though it's...y'know, X7)
5. X8 (pretty good but that guitar gets ooooooold)
6. X (classic but hard to listen to at times)
7. X2 (whiny)
8. X3 (boooooring)
[close]

1. 5
2. 6
3. 3
Good man.

6. 9 (a lot of it is really, really samey to me)
if you find it so same-y then why is it above 10

8. 10 (would probably be below 4 if the Mega Man Killer stage themes and Cybersheep's Dream weren't in here)
:\

Nitro Rider, Solar Inferno, King of Blades, For You, Abandoned Memory, Against the Pressure, No Turning Back, Wily Machine Battle, Staff Roll...

I might as well rank the GB titles by their soundtracks now.

1. (Best) IV
2. Dr. Wily's Revenge
3. II
4. V
5. III

Solar Inferno, No Turning Back, Wily Machine Battle, Staff Roll
agh okay fine, swap 1 and 10
EDIT:
1. (Best) IV
2. Dr. Wily's Revenge
3. II
4. V
5. III
3. II
I'M SORRY WHAT
Title: Re: The NSM Ultimate Ranking Topic

1. (Best) IV
2. Dr. Wily's Revenge
3. II
4. V
5. III
Swap II and V and I'll agree.

Also I just realised that Dudeman called 9's soundtrack too "samey", even though it was based off 2's soundtrack and is far less samey than 2.

While I will admit that II's soundtrack was too high-pitched, if you lower everything an octave and give it III-V instruments it's kinda catchy. This video shows that.

I'd also like to point out that Mega Man II's soundtrack is completely original, even if some songs like GB Top Man sound like NES Needle Man.

Also, III didn't have much of a soundtrack to begin with. Seriously, I just finished arranging all of it and it was easy. But Title Screen, New Weapon, and Wily Stage 2 were pretty good. But I personally would have liked III to take Dr. Wily's Revenge path and remix the Robot Master stage themes.

Mega Man Classic Series Main Game Soundtracks:
1. 5 (they're just comfortable to listen to)
2. 10 (everything)
3. 6 (it's difficult choosing between 10 and this. The diversity in both is beautiful, especially considering 6 only had one composer)
4. 3 (really good, but lacking in some areas, mainly Wily Stage themes)
5. 9 (the triangle pulse is too quiet, making good compositions hard to listen to)
6. 4 (bad drums but really good compositions)
7. 1 (it's alright but nothing too amazing)
8. 7 (it's alright but not too amazing either)
9. 2 (too samey, mediocre chiptuning (Password just hurts my ears), and Dr Wily Stage 2 has to play in 3 stages and that just sucks)
10. 8 (it's really not too bad, but it's lacking in a bunch of spots and only has a few amazing songs)

You can't call a video game objectively "the best." Every portion of a video game is subject to a person's outlooks on life. That's why no person's top 10 video games are ever the same, and why no great game is objectively better than another. We all view media through our own perspective and all see different things.

My list:
1. Mother 3
2. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons
3. Umineko no Naku koro Ni
4. Xenoblade Chronicles
5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
6. Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
7. Portal 2
8. Super Metroid
9. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
10. NieR: Automata

I enjoyed every second of these games, and, with the exception of Brothers, as I played it in one sitting, were games I always looked forward to playing and made time for. They're all games that have impacted me both as a gamer and a person. Yes, it's an opinion. It can't be anything else.

Eeveelutions Ranking (mostly design):
1. Espeon: Espeon is dope all around.
2. Jolteon: By and far the best of the classic, original Eeveelutions.
3. Leafeon: It's a bit on the thin/frail side, but I really like the nice, earthy color scheme.
4. Vaporeon: Cute lil' frill and fishy tail is pretty great.
5. Flareon: You can never go wrong with Flareon. Except the fact that Flareon desperately needed the Physical/Special split to come like, three generations earlier so that it didn't have so much wasted SpA. Boy, I'm really starting to ramble here. I should probably stop.
6. Umbreon: Its design is okay, if a bit minimalist. Black and yellow go pretty well together.
7. Sylveon: Flesh ribbons. Eww.
8. Glaceon: The original flesh ribbons. Weird dangly ear-things don't work at all for its design, and, in its sprites, makes it look extremely top heavy.

@Maelstrom I'm a bit surprised that 999 beat out Virtue's Last Reward, and that both beat out the Ace Attorney trilogy haha.

Here's my list of favorite games, take the rankings with a grain of salt bc I love all of these a lot and if I was being totally accurate, the first six would be the Professor Layton games and the next six would be the Ace Attorney games. But you get the gist.

1. Professor Layton and the Curious Village
2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice For All
3. Pokémon, I guess Black is my favorite
4. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D
5. Super Mario 64 or New Super Mario Bros. U/Luigi U for favorite 3D and 2D Mario respectively
6. Hotel Dusk: Room 215
7. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
8. Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
9. Animal Crossing: New Leaf
10. Undertale (I'm so sorry Noc I had Luigi's Mansion here but I had to list this one instead)

Honorable mentions and notes:
-Again, Luigi's Mansion was really close to making the cut
-I originally had the entire AA trilogy as number 2, but ultimately decided that was cheating. Rest assured, all of the AA games are right there underneath Layton.
-Steins;gate is as good as Virtue's Last Reward, but the latter doesn't have the slow and borderline boring setup quite so much.
-Mario & Luigi RPGs, mainly didn't put these on because it's impossible for me to pick one. I guess Partners in Time is my favorite.
-Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is about on par with Curious Village for me as my favorite, but I've played the latter more times (it's my most frequently replayed game ever) and it's ultimately the one I felt like I needed to put.
-Same goes for Last Window: The Secret of Cape West, which is as good as Hotel Dusk but which I've only played once while I've played Hotel Dusk about five times.
-Ocarina of Time 3D is basically tied with Majora's Mask, I consider them two parts of one bigger picture. Majora's Mask is just the one I like a little more.

If making this list has taught me anything, it's that I usually like the quirkier or darker sequels as much or more as the originals (see Layton, AA, Zelda, Mario & Luigi, Zero Escape) and also I like single player generally more than multiplayer games

To be perfectly honest, as great as VLR was, it wasn't as focused as 999 and didn't have quite the tension. The puzzles weren't quite as good. In the end, I chose 999 because it had a much bigger impact on me personally. As for the Ace Attorney games, I think they're great, but I would hesitate to call any of them perfect, or close to that. They all have low points, and every game suffers from poor pacing at some point. Even AA2, my favorite game, has a very, very slow start, and it's not really nessicary at all. I feel similar about the danganronpa games. They're great, don't get me wrong, but they always have a few plot twists that I see coming or rub me the wrong way. The games I listed made the list because they didn't do that for me.

Edit: Wait, you chose JFA? Really? I've always thought it was the weakest of the original trilogy and compared it to Investigations 1 in quality.

It's a tough call, but ultimately VLR is so much deeper for me and has the better escape rooms. It's also a really nice-sized adventure if you want it to be, and the multiple routes mechanic in the game was justified in such an awesome way, basically elaborating on what 999 introduced and making it way cooler. I also like Sigma better as a protagonist and liked the end of game twists better. So that's my reasoning.

Right. So, in that sense, we can't say that 8 as a whole has the worst battle mode.

Wii's my second favorite. While this has nothing to do with why it's the second best, it's my first Mario Kart.

Sonic Mania Zones (ranked by level design, theme, music, and bosses as factors):

GREAT:
Chemical Plant Zone: The only slight against this stage is that they didn't use this as a chance to eliminate the worst aspects of the original (i.e. drowning in purple water), but otherwise, still a great stage, and Act 2 is brilliant as well.
Studiopolis Zone: only complaint is no slot machines... and the first zone's boss is meh

GOOD:
Oil Ocean Zone: Another surprising inclusion, but a welcome one nonetheless. It's slightly more bearable than in the original, especially because the second act really mixes it up, and speaking of which, the ABSOLUTE BEST part of this stage was running into a fire shield and saying, "Wait... Flame Shield in a stage filled with oil? Can you... YES, YES! YOU CAN!" its brilliant
also when the second act's boss popped its "head" out of the oil
that was great too
Metallic Madness Zone: A pretty good stage made all the better by a clever little gimmick. The Act 2 boss is bloody BRILLIANT, to boot.
Green Hill Zone: Nothing wrong here; great introduction stage, and pretty simple, but effective overall. Also a fitting first zone for Sonic's (true) revival.
Mirage Saloon Zone: Making the first act this game's version of Sky Chase Zone (in this game's version of Dust Hill Zone, nonetheless!) was pretty clever, and I don't have any bad things to say about this stage overall. Also a plus is that it seems like it's harder to accidentally kill yourself in the sky part of the level. I only did once, but then again, I was purposefully messing around to test its limits (and that took quite a while to accomplish!)
Press Garden Zone: Pretty good stage. The ice gimmick was rather interesting, but I can't help but feel something more could have been added to make it more interesting to explore. Maybe I just failed at exploration. I dunno. Exploration doesn't really feel as "accessible" in this stage as in other, older stages.

OKAY:
Titanic Monarch Zone: Pretty good for a final stage (suitable in length, at least), but certain parts of it can be downright frustrating to play, especially as Super Sonic, which... should not be a thing. It's SUPER Sonic for a reason.
Lava Reef Zone: Seriously, why did they have to pick all the worst stages from Sonic 3 & Knuckles? I mean, it's not absolutely terrible in this game, but I don't doubt that there were better stages that could have been picked. Granted, I'm not really as much a fan of Sonic 3's zones as I am of Sonic 2's, but I probably would have picked (a better) Hydrocity Zone (with influence taken from Aquatic Ruin Zone, most notably that fact that you can easily avoid being anywhere near the water), Marble Garden instead of Flying Battery Zone, and IceCap Zone instead of Lava Reef Zone. And probably make Stardust Speedway a mashup with another zone, like Star Light Zone or something. But I suppose having to pick around the new stages with conflicting themes was a thing.
Stardust Speedway: Take away Sonic CD's time travel mechanic, and you take away a lot of what was good about the stage, and what's left over is "okay" level design that's a bit unfun to navigate and surprisingly slow speed for a level with "Speed" in its name. The aesthetics and new mechanics added to the stage are pretty interesting, though.

BAD:
Hydrocity Zone: more like... ATROCITY ZONE! *snicker snicker* The best part of this is that they added boats and stuff and the Act 1 boss. Everything else is bad. nobody likes water levels like this
Flying Battery Zone: Probably the most broken zone overall. Wasn't fun in the original, but I'm pretty sure they made it worse in this one. How many times can I get caught in the walls as Knuckles? The world may never know! Too much instakill stuff.

In terms of level design/interesting gameplay/complexity, I'd probably order my top 3 like so:

1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. New Super Luigi U (While I still don't understand this game's existence, I think it does a really nice job of actually switching up the tired out NSMB-style gameplay with some actually interesting levels. I just wish there was more of it.)

The rest of the Mario games are really similar to me in terms of overall quality. However, Lost Levels would definitely be at the bottom because many of its design choices are unfair (invisible blocks, backwards warp zones, etc.), especially to people who haven't played the game before or don't know anything about it. The rest of the game is just bland to me. Even the original SMB, while I still don't think it holds up as well as SMB3 or SMW, has much tighter level design overall. I love difficult games, but not when it's just tedious trial-and-error stuff.

To be fair, even Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 have a few levels in that tedious/unfair category (Valley of Bowser 2 & Tubular, to name a few).

NSMBU suffers from a bad opening few worlds, but ohhhh man it becomes so much fun, and surprisingly challenging for a Mario game. And New Super Luigi U is like an ultra fun challenge mode that's even more insanely hard. I 100%ed both and had a great time doing it.
Title: Re: The NSM Ultimate Ranking Topic
Post by: Static on August 26, 2017, 11:34:25 PM
The reason why I prefer Super Mario World (and to a lesser extent, SMB3) over every other 2D Mario game is not the sheer amount of challenge they offered, but rather the creativity, nuance, variety, and depth put in to almost every level in these games.

While NSMBU certainly has tight level design (there's only a small handful of 2D Mario games that have mainly incoherent or unfair level design), almost everything in it has been done before to the same extent, if not better, in earlier titles (even earlier NSMB games). While I guess you could think of NSMBU as a refined version of the previous NSMB games, and I wholeheartedly agree that it's a fun game, it lacks the heart and memorability of games like SMW.

Calling those statements "facts" is pretty extreme. Each New Super Mario Bros. game is similiar, because they're all called, "New Super Mario Bros.". Each game has plenty of differences.

every single Mario game ever is more or less the exact same thing

except for Sunshine and 64

Galaxy, to me, shares a lot more with its 2D predecessors than anything else in terms of level design and structure. Ever since Galaxy, the trend has gotten a lot more noticable in each subsequent 3D Mario game (though Odyssey might change that). 64 and Sunshine, on the other hand, are much more focused on exploration and collecting things, especially Sunshine.

While it's up to you whether which gameplay style is better, there's no doubt that the 3D games have been aligning more and more with the 2D games ever since Galaxy. Personally, I prefer just pure platforming in my Mario games, but 64/Sunshine have their own merits, such as incredibly varied objectives and deeper controls.

I still don't understand how on earth you can put II above III overall. We shouldn't be judging potential here, we should be judging what was actually programmed into the games, and II is physically painful.

III is severely lacking in original tunes; II's music was an octave too high most of the time, but the composer tried his darnedest to capture the essence of both 2 & 3's music, and he did a pretty good job, imo.

III is still a better game overall, I will agree.

Pixar Movies, Ranked

Fantastic:
WALL-E (2008): do i even need to explain; it's beautiful and a work of art
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Coco (2017): Basically what Inside Out should've been.
The Incredibles (2004)
Up (2009): The best opening and by far one of the best Pixar villains. Essentially a story about a man who never fully got to live the life he wanted to live helping others be happy... how could you not love it?
Ratatouille (2007)
Toy Story (1995)

Great:
Finding Nemo (2003)
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Toy Story 2 (1999)

Good:
Inside Out (2015)
Finding Dory (2016)
Monsters University (2013)

Okay:
Brave (2012): Doesn't really seem like a Pixar film; it's fairly forgettable at times but it's pretty good overall.
Cars 2 (2011): I like this one better than the first because of how out-there and unexpected it is. Cars is just kind of bland, but it's hard to hate a spy movie with cars.

Meh:
Cars (2006): It's ok, I guess, but it's not really compelling in any way.
A Bug's Life (1998): Nothing about this film does anything for me.

Haven't Seen
The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Cars 3 (2017)
Incredibles 2 (2018)

Will add more commentary and stuff eventually.
