Title: ThatHiddenCharacter's Instrumental Arrangements
Post by: ThatHiddenCharacter on January 08, 2017, 06:39:22 AM
As the name implies, you can find my non-piano arrangements here. For now, all I have is the Yoshi's Island World Map Medley, but I will add more when I get to arranging more. I will give a midi and mp3 file for every song, but the mp3 sounds way better. If you would like a mus file, just ask and I'll make one, but I'm not going through the trouble if no one is going to use it.

I love Gourmet Race. It combines my three most favorite things into one: video games, great music, and food. So, update two is all about Gourmet Race, from Super Star and Epic Yarn. Darn it, now I'm hungry.

This is a very special update because this is the first update that I will be posting my instrumental arrangements of WaluigiTime64's compositions! If you haven't listened to them already, you should seriously check them out. His compositions are some of the best video game songs I've ever heard. Anyway, there are three songs I'm putting in this update.

I'm fairly certain that it's not a VGM if there's no VG to go with it.

I don't know how else to categorize it, and aren't you composing these for a game. Not for an actual game, but for an idea of a game that may or may not ever come into existence.

I don't actually know what they are for. I just make them, and hope they entertain people.

This update is going to have the boss theme from Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and WaluigiTime64's Generic Sky-Factory (Main). I'd just like to add that if anyone wants to request a song, feel free to, but it has to have decently accurate sheet music on the site.

The first song here isn't how I think the song would sound. It's just a synth cover of the actual instrumental WaluigiTime64 made. The second song is how I think it would sound. Check out the rest of his songs if you have the chance. They're amazing.

Finally a video game song in an update. Apparently ThatHiddenCharacter forgets to do things that he's supposed to. Well, I guess we can't blame him for having a bad memory and loving WaluigiTime64's music because, let's face it, his music is the best music ever.

It's time that I actually created a system for how I update this. From now on, every update will have 1. a song from an existing video game (most likely Nintendo) and 2. a WaluigiTime64 composition. If I ever have multiple instrumental arrangements of either without the other, I will not update until I have one of the other.

I need to get this off my chest. No one mentioned anything about the fact that I asked how people were doing in SEVEN different languages. Not even asking what some of them are. I can tell you that no one knows what the second-to-last language was. I would feel much better if someone asked what the languages were or at least said something. Wow, that got a bit out of hand. Sorry for yelling. And by yelling, I obviously mean typing angrily with the occasional bold and italicized word. Have a wonderful day and please come again. Try the spinach pie next time, it's delicious.

Sadly, I can't afford Finale 2014, but I have a friend who has it. She made the pdf for me, but my formatting in finale was incorrect. I only need help this once. I can work better from scratch on other arrangements. I just don't want to undo everything I've done accidentally. Also, back on the topic of this topic, not only are recommendations for instrumental arrangements welcome, they're encouraged. I'm not good at choosing between multiple options.

In a town in the woods at the top of a hill there's a house where no one lives. So you take a big bag of your big-city money there and buy it. Late at night when the house is dark and you're all alone there's a noise upstairs. At the top of the stairs there's a door, and you take a deep breath and try it. And the flashlight shows you something moving just inside the door. There's a tattered sheet and a song that you have heard somewhere before.
(I'm thinking of making a forum game of this lyrics thing. Is it a good idea? If I did, would you participate? And if I do, should I keep doing the thing where I change lyrics to fit sheet music or should I leave the original lyrics? I mean for guessing the song.)

Okay, so this is a special post. This post isn't going to have a WaluigiTime64 song. It's going to have a mash-up I made of Heart and Soul and the Super Mario World Map Theme. The story behind this is that I noticed that the LH in the map theme sounded familiar to me, which is when I realized that it is very similar to one of the variations of the LH of Heart and Soul. And that brings us to this.

From now on I will be doing what I did in the beginning. Two random songs that may or may not contain either type of song I post. The amount of WaluigiTime64 compositions available restrict my ability to constantly post here, so whenever I do make an instrumental of one, it will be posted, but only when I do. Why I'm bothering to say this, even I don't know. Also, I wanted to say that LeviR.star did a really good job on Computer Virus Battle which I have already made an instrumental of. ThatHiddenCharacter really needs to get his music in check. It's been about one and a half weeks since he's updated this thread. I'm really getting fed up with him. (Rhode Island Fact of the Day: Wicked is used as an adverb that is a synonym to really. Ex: Wicked good. I think I might do this every update. Not sure. I literally just thought of it after I typed the rest.)

I'd just like to say, Generic Grass (Race) sounds a LOT better with an NES soundfont, but I can't figure out how to export songs with a special soundfont, so you guys are stuck with the instruments I used. They're good, but nowhere near as good as with an NES soundfont.

If you're using MuseScore it's "View>Synthesiser>Save to Score", after which you would go "File>Export", picking either the .wav or .mp3 options (because no one cares about .flac files).

I would yell something about chiptune limitations, but Konami chip and all that.

However, you could use some more instrument variety.

It's just a soundfont I got for Musescore. It's called The NES Soundfont. Besides, I did leave up the songs with the other instruments.

Post by: WaluigiTime64 on March 09, 2017, 12:56:49 PM
I know, but I still think it's good to stick to some kind of limitations when making chiptune songs, just to make it more convincing.

Yay! Two more songs! One is a song we all know and love. The other one... apparently also is, but it also happens to be a song I arranged for the site! That's pretty cool. Of course, the instrumental has stuff that the arrangement does not have because of lack of more than two hands to play it with.

Two more songs! It seems ThatHiddenCharacter is finally getting on top of things. Couple of things to note: The arpeggios (glissandi?) in Eerie Hotel are too slow, but I can't fix it. Also, (and more importantly) the second song is dedicated to one of NSM's newest members swimswamit! It was very hard to arrange. I also forgot to include Rhode Island Fact of the Day in the last update. If I ever do it again, I give Waluigi, E. Gadd, Levi, and Andy permission to yell at me for forgetting it. (Rhode Island Fact of the Day: Contrary to what 50% of Americans believe, Rhode Island is NOT the island off the coast of New York. I can not stress this enough. Rhode Island is not an actual island. It's right below Massachusetts and right next to Connecticut.)

Finally an update! This update is because I need to lose weight and what better way than Athletic themes! Don't judge the first one. Also, don't ask why I made it that way. I have as much of a clue as you do. (Rhode Island Fact of the Day: Have you ever seen Family Guy? Well, Quahog is not a real town in Rhode Island. The space version definitely gives off a mario galaxy vibe, which is always good. I'm not a fan of the drums in the other one because there aren't drums in any of the versions of the theme that I've heard. The syncopated chords should almost act instead of the snare, if that makes sense, so it doesn't require the extra drive. If you're set on drums, though, I'd make it double time.

New thing! I'm not gonna stop making instrumentals, but I recently came into a great GameBoy soundfont thanks to Andy. Because of this, I'm going to make some GameBoy versions of songs. I have no idea how true the sounds are to the original. According to Andy, it is. I will only do songs that I have already made instrumental arrangements of. That is all. I have one today. (Rhode Island Fact of the Day: Pahk yah cah in Hahvahd Yahd is Massachusetts. Rhode Islanders may have a similar accent, but seriously, we don't speak like the letter r doesn't exist. We just put it where it doesn't belong. Ex: Qawtah (Quarter) or Idear (Idea). Side note: I do not do the stereotypical r thing. People make fun of me for not speaking "Rhode Islandese" if you will.)

Well, tbh, it sounds close; the percussion is the main difference.

It's probably the echo of the percussion.

If you're using MuseScore, you can change it through View>Synthesiser>Effect>No Effect, or by changing the reverb dials to be completely dry, or to remove all echo.

I did the dry effect. Does it sound better? I think it does, but I didn't play too many GameBoy games, so I don't have much of a reference. I just tested and, to be honest, using the dry effect sounds the same as changing to no effect.

I've been on overdrive lately for instrumentals. Don't worry, it'll probably be evened out by a long time of nothing. (Rhode Island Fact of the Day: Rhode Island is the home of some great companies. Just a little something by itself. It's a "remix" (if you can call it that) of Grass Land from SMB3. Sounds great with the NES soundfont (especially because I now know how to turn off effects, so it sounds accurate to the NES at least somewhat). Almost forgot the RIFD (Rhode Island Fact of the Day). (RIFD: Just like every state, there are some really weird laws here. For example, it's illegal to throw a jar of pickle juice on a trolley in Rhode Island. I'm serious.)

Nothing new, just saying that my instrumental arrangement of Outlandish Interruption from Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has been fixed. The organ and the LH of the harpsichord were completely wrong at one point and had one note off at another. I figured this out because I was arranging Severe Infestation (as an actual arrangement for the site) and it has the same LH as all of those themes. The only one that's different from the rest is Library Piano, which is what I based Outlandish Interruption off of. But now it's fixed and everyone can be happy!
Title: Re: ThatHiddenCharacter's Instrumental Arrangements

I actually fixed Outlandish Interruption a little bit more since I last said. To commemorate this (which I should have already done), I am posting Severe Infestation from the same game! This is my second instrumental arrangement that is also one of my piano arrangements! Go check out my PA thread if you want to hear, and possibly give advice for, the piano arrangement. (THCFotD: Robert Capron went to my school. In case you don't know who he is, he's the guy who played Rowley in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. He doesn't look like that anymore. He graduated last year and he's already getting quite into the acting business. I know at least one show he's on, and he's probably on a lot more. Just thought it would be nice to state that I went to school with a famous-ish actor.)

I should probably mention that sometimes I update some of these arrangements and don't say anything. For example, I updated Dodo's Coming!! awhile ago. There may be others for all I know. Well, here's a new one! I've really been wanting to make some instrumental arrangements where I branched off from the original sounds of the song and I was finally inspired with a certain song and style. I'd tell you about what inspired me, but I'm not going to. If you're that curious that you just have to know, you can PM me or Skype me. (RIFotD: The world's largest bug is on the roof of New England Pest Control in Providence. It's a big blue termite, 58 feet long and 928 times actual termite size. I definitely did not just copy&paste that. [Which I obviously did, but I actually did already know about the bug. Used to go by it all the time on the highway.])
