So I've been keeping up with the Google notifications for the NX, and I've just heard a few interesting things.
1) The NX was not revealed at the Tokyo Game Show
2) The NX was given a $399 price tag
3) Get this: the NX is going to be a "reboot" for Nintendo with cartridges and a 720p screen
I just get mixed feelings about that... I mean sure it's great that Nintendo is self-aware of the mistakes it had made with the Wii U, but after Star Fox Zero, I've been wary about Nintendo's "return to form"s. Other than Breath of the Wild and maybe Smash 5 rumors (5mash?), the starting game lineup is eh (Dragon Quest and World of Tanks? Seriously?), and it's not going to surpass the specs of Xbox One Scorpio and whatnot. Anyone else got any thoughts?
It's seriously unlikely that they'll actually go back to carts. Zelda gameplay we saw at E3 wouldn't even fit one a cart. Probably not even a compact disc. Nah, the nx is most likely gonna be bluray
Might release the 4th of march if this leak is legit
https://www.destructoid.com/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-amiibo-seemingly-gets-a-release-date-may-indicate-game-s-launch-387705.phtml
Nintendo needs to unveil the console's design soon. The longer they wait, the harder it will be to build up hype and awareness for the console
That's everyone's mindset. But, we're at the mercy of Nintendo at this point. And they're being cruel.
I'm not even talking from a fanboy perspective (although yes I am extremely impatient there too)
Whenever you're releasing a brand new product, it takes time to advertise and hype it up. They need to sell consumers on whatever the NX is, and at this point they have 6 months to do it.
They're not being cruel, they're shooting themselves in the foot.
I've heard that phrase before :o
FLUDD has tried to look into possibly unreleased Metroid games that Nintendo abandoned, and after doing some research, he came to that same conclusion.

bruh
carts ftw
This^
What's so hard to believe about carts returning to home consoles? They're still the norm for portable consoles, so why not?
Because for the amount of space a cart can fit, a disc still fits more. And a bluray disc (iirc) can hold 4 times as much as a regular compact disc. Its just the most efficient way to store data
We'll just have to wait and see what happens, I guess.
They have more storage, yes; but carts have a distinct advantage in cutting out loading times, which is something discs can never overcome.
The NX is going to be two Gamecubes duct taped together. Mark my words.

Oh my gosh, I just heard that Resident Evil 7 might come out with the NX (yessssssss), and if that can do for the NX what Resident Evil 4 did with the Gamecube, there just might be hope for Nintendo in the third-party area
Whoa, what?! RE7 might come to the NX???
And now apparently a sequel to Red Dead Redemption might be coming on the NX too o.0
Pokemon games are confirmed coming to NX

I am hype. Hopefully the battery life on the portable part isn't like the Wii U gamepad's...

That. Would. Be. Awesome.
It reminds me of Super Mario Sunshine.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. I believe this console could be great.....but then again it could be another Wii U flop. Nintendo better not be stupid though if they want this console to be great.
Well, judging by how they didn't tack on Wii, but went with a different non-game-console name like "switch" will probably do them wonders.
edit: And why do we speak in spoilers?

Hmm, you do have an excellent point here. I believe the name "Wii" got old before the Wii U even came out.
Did anyone notice the heart in the right side of the background of the 2nd clip of the 3D mario game, a la SM64?
http://nichegamer.com/2016/10/20/first-look-at-nintendos-new-console-nintendo-switch/
Here's a rundown of the devs involved and committed to the system, along with a lot of salt in the comments.
Super Mario 128 would be great.

Good I'm not the only one who noticed that!
Also anyone notice the 2 item slots on the Mario Kart part?
Mario seems to have the running-speed boost from 3D World which I hear people don't like, but I never really cared either way.
I can only think:
Spoiler
Skyrim is on a Nintendo console?!
I'm suitably impressed. Unfortunately I won't be around to play it, but maybe zelda u will come out a bit earlier
Back to King Boo, it's around Halloween... is this Nintendo's way of showing a spoopy DLC 3?
Also, concerning the 3D Mario, while I didn't catch the heart, I couldn't help but notice the two clips shown: one was some tropical (Latin?) city or other, and the other resembled a sandy fortress of some sort in a desert (Middle Eastern?) So maybe this "new Mario" concept is a world adventure, similar to that in Sonic Unleashed?
I'm impressed, seriously. What a good trailer, and good advertising.
I am REALLY pumped for that 3D Mario title, holy shit.
The Mario game isn't a free-roam game. It does seem to be pretty big in the amount of space given, but there are visible invisible barriers at the edge of the "level".
I don't think much can be said about the Mario game yet since literally only two short clips were shown.
Yeah. Well, it seems like the engine is completely different because the movements seemed to be more "fluid" or apply more gravity. I dunno, something seemed notably different and I don't know what.
Quote from: cashwarrior1 on October 20, 2016, 04:06:05 PMYeah. Well, it seems like the engine is completely different because the movements seemed to be more "fluid" or apply more gravity. I dunno, something seemed notably different and I don't know what.
I hate to break it to you, but the footage doesn't look significantly different from the 3D World engine, which is what everyone is comparing it to. It
does look like a reskinned 3D World to me...
The Nintendo switch is a culmination of all of Nintendo's successes and failures from the past 20 years bundled into a single console, their magnum opus. It will be the best selling console of the decade.

this is the console we needed, not motion control for the wii back in 2008, jeez. thank u for this gift nintendo
and that new 3d mario game is what i'm really hyped about tbh
Daaaaamn, Nintendo, back at it again with the tease
"Here's this super cool thing we're doing!
Now wait forever for it, losers."
March is hardly forever.
I don't usually take this sort of stance with Nintendo, but I think it just looks like a gimmicks on top of gimmicks to make it a Wii U inside a Wii while also ripping off the PS Vita. And for $299...
It's a gimmick that's cool! Plus, lots of 3rd party support! The real question is: what colors does it come in?
Augh, I think that naming a video game console the "Switch" is always going to be inappropriate. Whenever I hear "the Nintendo Switch", I keep imagining that Nintendo suddenly started making electrical equipment and stuff you can put in electrical circuits, not more video game consoles. The name "the Wii" is ripe for inappropriate jokes (mainly involving pee), but I think that a name implying that it's for the wrong industry is the bigger turn-off.
Boo you should feel bad for that one
This is super interesting
While watching that I noticed when Mario stopped running his cap kinda flew up a bit then landed back on his head (0:56 or so in the video).
Nothing big, just thought it was a nice touch!
But what's the ice about?

Why don't we Switch the topic back to Nintendo? ;)

I still wanna know if it's going to be MK8 Remastered or DLC 3
My guess is DLC pack 3.....then again, I don't think they'd change the item system in a DLC pack.
I'm on board with the idea of "enhanced ports" that people have been throwing around, where the game is rereleased for the Switch with some new features; in this case, MK8 with King Boo (plus more??) and double items, or SM3DW with a new world, or Splatoon with hairstyles and new maps.

I'm curious to see what new stuff is released on Mario Kart 8. The new item system alone takes the cake in my opinion. I really hope they don't make Mario Kart 9
already xD
I don't think they'd go from a 6 year gap (Mario Kart Wii [2008] - Mario Kart 8 [2014]) to a 3 year gap (Mario Kart 8 [2014] - Mario Kart 9/Switch [2017]). This isn't counting handheld Mario Karts though.
As for the new Mario game, It looks a bit different than Super Mario 3D World. Looks more like Super Mario Sunshine. I HOPE it's something like Sunshine or 64. That alone would make the Switch worth it.

I'm just hyped at the thought that if this does replace both home and portable consoles, I'll finally be able to play Pokémon on the big screen for realz. Though there are solid reasons for that to not happen too.
Gonna be interesting to see if Skyrim HD is gonna be in the launch line-up.
...But it'd be amazing if they make a Star Fox Switch game, please make a good Star Fox game for once Nintendo, I would just about kill for at this point for one...
^they literally just made starfox zero ???
yeah wasn't zero supposed to be good
Zero was great
Ehhhhh not really...
-Sales absolutely flopped
-Not a great rating
-Released during the Wii U's death throes
-And let's not forget: It was a reboot of a remake of a reboot. Come on Nintendo, give us something actually original for once besides "unique" game controls
for a star fox game, that was pretty unique
Lol Most of your complaints don't even have anything to do with the actual game.
lol whatever dudes I put the original complaint in small font for a reason :P
On a different note, I definitely think that it's gonna have a touchscreen, 'cuz like why wouldn't it after the Wii U.
in this day and age, they'd be crazy to NOT include a touchscreen
I'd love the absence of a touch screen
I think the way the WiiU handled the touch screen worked out nicely. It was there and very nicely functional, but you didn't need it for a lot of games. Unlike the DS where literally every game used it in some way.

Super Mario Odyssey looks incredible, but when they said "holiday 2017" I literally shouted "FUCK YOU" at the screen ahahahaha
Zelda and Mario are currently the only games I'm interested in, so idk if I'm going to use the money I've saved for the console right away.
And yeah the console is $300 with no game which is just yikes. I might have to hold off until they at least bundle it with something.
Looks like it's going to be a good year.
Disgaea 5 (with and without collectors shit), two more zelda amiibo, two zelda bundles, accessory pricing...
here come preorders, too...
Seriously so excited for this. Console comes out the day I leave for a tour with one of the ensembles at my university, so I can play Zelda while we're on the bus! (Thank God it has outlets.)
The lineup of this console during the first year alone is enough to warrant a purchase from me. Zelda and Mario look fantastic, new Xenoblade is dope, hyped for Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, TWO possible Dragon Quest games, and I'm super interested in ARMS even though its just Wii Sports Boxing with extra stretchy arms.

I get why you're hesitant, and I would be too. The way I kind of see it is that perhaps they might look at it like they did the 3DS: Mark it down a bunch a few months later and then throw a shit-ton of VC games at the "ambassadors" who bought it for full price. One can only hope.

So Mario Odyssey looks great and everything, but it just occurred to me that I might be mildly disappointed if the Wario brothers don't show up in it. Dunno why I'm thinking about that, but there you go.
Well, then not appearing is a huge possibility since they hardly ever appear in non-spin-off titles. But it's not like that has hindered other games' success.
Yeah, I know that and the game won't be any lesser because of it. But in a game this big, a man can dream.
I didn't realise that this was a thing. (https://youtu.be/f98ZwgzYyig)
Also there's Puyo Puoy Tetris and a new 2D sonic game that both look pretty decent.
MMMMMMMMMMMMMSUPER MARIO ODYSSEY LOOKS AMAZING!!!! Also, Bowser looks good in a suit! Now, I'm curious to see how the cap mechanic ties into everything.

They need to appear in the city!!! YESSS!!!
Now we need Captain Toad, Birdo, and Donkey Kong Jr. in DLC pack three for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I would say I was disappointed, but honestly it's exactly what I expected. Nintendo is just hilariously out of touch with the market.
I'll probably just get the Zelda Master Edition and put it in a closet until the switch is in a bargain bin (or Nintendo fires and rehires everyone).
Elaborate?
I wasn't disappointed in the slightest.
You two are joking, right? Where to begin... There's a hilarious lack of software, especially at launch (minus Zelda, ofc) with basically them just showing off their "see look third parties are on board" rather than actual games, the battery life is too ridiculously limited to be useful, accessories continue to grow in price (but that isn't really exclusive to Nintendo), they obviously focused on the mundane features (HD Rumble?) rather than their lack in power when compared to consoles that are already on the market, and more. The only thing that was real news was that it won't be region locked, but most everything else was p. predictable.
I like the way the controllers feel.

I believe the only real issue with the Switch is the pricing. The joy cons are $50 each and the pro controller is $70. That's outrageous. The Switch itself is expensive software and won't be able to match the Xbox One and PS4, especially when it comes to pricing.
As for the launch titles, they're a little thin...which isn't very surprising. They could've used another big title (like Zelda BotW), or at least had Super Mario Odyssey ready in time. The holiday is way too far off to be releasing gameconsole-selling games in my opinion.
I think it's great that they are bringing games from other consoles (for example Skyrim), but games like that won't sell the console when you can buy a different console that is cheaper with the same game. They need more good exclusive games that will sell the console (like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey). Those are my two big concerns: expenses and lack of games at launch.
1 2 switch isn't Wii Sports. I know a lot of people didn't like Wii Sports, but that is the game that first drew me to the Wii back when it was first released. Wii sports sold approximately 82.79 million, which is pretty dang good. The highest-selling Wii U game only sold 8 million (Mario Kart 8 ). Also, Arms? No way.
Now if they only improved the battery life...
you know why Wii Sports sold so well?
Because it was packed-in with the system.
Listen, I'm excited for this system, but I'm not gonna sit back and act like it's God's gift to video gaming. It still has some serious problems, but this is a step in the right direction imo. This system offers something no other console has at the moment, and that's portability. If people want that, there are some sacrifices that have to be made.
The battery life is a little chintzy but honestly if you were expecting more than 6 hours at most you're delusional. This isn't a smartphone or tablet we're talking about here, this is a fully decked out console designed to be totally mobile. Hell, even most smart phones don't last more than 3-4 with constant, extended use; and they're not playing full video games like Skyrim on it.

At first, Super Mario Odyssey blinded the consoles issues for me. xD

Yes and no. $300 nowadays is not terrible for a new gaming box, but the price increase of controllers in general in recent years has become outrageous.

Actual games has been Nintendo's increasing downfall. As of right now, these are the only launch titles announced:

Just Dance 2017
Snipperclips - Cut it out, together!
Super Bomberman R
1, 2, Switch
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
I am Setsuna
Skylanders Imaginators
(source) (https://www.destructoid.com/all-of-the-nintendo-switch-march-launch-games-in-one-place-411919.phtml)
Ignoring Zelda (since nintendo does nintendo fine), these games are all garbage/casual/party games; there is no meat here. Sure they have the support of "over 80 game devs," but if all we see are ports of preexisting games
that I could like, play on steam right now, then we have a crippling issue. Example: Skyrim is not new and I don't need a Switch to play it. Bringing third party support back in is only really a good thing if they bring new games with them.

ofc. it isn't wii sports, it's just a shitty launch title with similar hype as wii sports (i.e. overly gimmicky). also:
Quote from: K-NiGhT on January 14, 2017, 12:53:16 PMyou know why Wii Sports sold so well?
Because it was packed-in with the system.
I personally use mine as a coaster for drinks.
Quote from: MaestroUGC on January 14, 2017, 12:56:50 PMThe battery life is a little chintzy but honestly if you were expecting more than 6 hours at most you're delusional. This isn't a smartphone or tablet we're talking about here, this is a fully decked out console designed to be totally mobile. Hell, even most smart phones don't last more than 3-4 with constant, extended use; and they're not playing full video games like Skyrim on it.
Yeah, but this is a
NEW thing. Generally new things are expected to have qualities surpassing current things. It doesn't feel like quite a successor if simple things like the battery life can't be decent enough for a road trip. If I were some big name company who lead the market in hand-held gaming and wanted to move some of that success to console gaming, battery life would and should have been a major part of the development process.
Technology doesn't develop that quickly, and Nintendo isn't in the energy market. Besides if you are going on a road trip I'd be surprised if you didn't pack a charger for your devices, the Switch is able to be charged with a USB C port which is already an industry standard.
That's not the point: the point is that with hardcore gameplay you can only get 2.5 hours of play on a full battery, which is pathetic.
Sure, but who would actually have that kind of time to play games while mobile? Unless you're travelling in which case: chargers.
Again, not the point.
When the Nintendo DS was in development, Nintendo refused to develop the prototype farther until it could survive a drop from 5 ft ten times in a row. Just because that was a hard thing to do did not stop them from persevering, and the system ended up better because of it. Methinks that because of the poor WiiU sales, Nintendo might have been more focused on getting SOMETHING done soon rather than get the job done right. I wouldn't be surprised if we see an updated version of this console (assuming sales don't repeat the WiiU (HUGE assumption)) in which they actually address this issue.
I just watched the trailer for botw and all I can say is gag. They made it look like a fire emblem game

I align myself with Olimar's stance, particularly on the pathetic "portable" aspect.
Rather than push for a solid portable system, with similar ease-of-use, longevity, and compromises as 3DS, they pushed for this "all-in-one", which sacrifices on performance tremendously to put in an outdated Tegra SoC (because they couldn't wait any longer to rid themselves of the Wii U trash heap I suppose)
Nintendo will never see large 3rd party support, whether it's just the same multiplatforms or exclusive content, unless they can really push their marketshare higher. They are not doing a damn thing to move in that direction. It's honestly uncertain what audience they're targeting with this console. Fanboys will always buy it obviously, but that's really all they're getting here.
Casual market? This lacks all of the notability, ease-of-use, library/support base of iOS devices, which is honestly the performance tier and market they're competing in at this point.
Hardcore gaming market? Nobody beyond the most dedicated of Zelda fans is going to even consider this when they, as Olimar said, can play nearly every other title mentioned on Steam. Plus, half of the Nintendo titles in the next year will just be ports/adaptations of Wii U titles, which will be going on clearance at a great price.

Well okay that's great and all, but it's only launching with 5 games, only one of which is appealing to more than a casual audience (unless the Bomberman fanbase is actually rabid, I have zero knowledge of the franchise).

I think the 5 games means games with physical releases, not those with digital ones as well.

Remember how many launch titles the Wii U had? 32. And then what happened? The infamous Wii U games drought. I'm assuming they want to pace their releases better, which is why there are less launch titles for the Switch. If they release decent games every couple of months I think they'll be fine.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (https://tomorrowcorporation.com/posts/were-opening-the-tomorrow-corporation-vaults)
am I alone in thinking a second splatoon is idiotic? The current servers are already small enough
Eh, never really got into it myself. Is there a drastically different mechanic from the first one?
new guns new stages
same old crap
I mean it's a good game I just don't care
I don't mind that it's essentially an upgraded clone of the first game because the first game was fantastic. I like to think of this as a port to the Switch with a crapton of added features, which is fine by me.
but it's an exclusively online game. Making a second game that isn't the same as the first splits the playerbase
It's not exclusively online any more than Mario Kart is
um, yes it is. The core gameplay is the 4v4 battle, not the story mode. Mario Kart is the same whether or not you go online
tbh, do we have enough info to be bashing it yet? what if they actually fix their 1 player campaign this time around?
Quote from: NocturneOfShadow on January 25, 2017, 09:34:42 PMam I alone in thinking a second splatoon is idiotic? The current servers are already small enough
Nope^
I believe it's old hat.
nah y'all are wrong splatoon is dope
splatoon is one of my favorite wii U games. How are none of you understanding my point?
Me: A second splatoon is a bad idea, the people playing the first one won't be able to start a match
You guys: Splatoon was great, this one will also be good
Me: I know splatoon is great, I'm saying a second splatoon is a bad idea when the game is already predominantly online
You guys: but splatoon is good, you shouldn't bash the sequel yet
Me: I'm not bashing the sequel, the servers are just too small to support both games
Seabass: I agree, splatoon 2 is just gonna be the same as the first
Me: gives up?
Presumably that's the whole point with this new paid online service, more and better servers.
Splatoon and Wind Waker are the only Wii U games I own, ever since I sold Sm4sh.
On an unrelated note... all of those rumours about GameCube games on Switch Virtual Console make me wonder: if it actually happens, what happens to PAL games where you can choose between 50Hz and 60Hz?
Release week is finally here! Who's excited to buy their very own Zelda machine?
I have a perfectly good Zelda box at home, and mine has a touch screen, thank you
So does the new Zelda machine.
Are they going to immediately transfer all of the Wii U Virtual Console games to the new eShop, or gradually start the process all over again until I lose interest, patience, or graduate high school?
Virtual Console isn't supported at launch.

Do all physical Switch copies of Cave Story+ come with this stuff?
I'm not sure, I pre-ordered it. Call GameStop, they should know.
Pretty sure. That's why it's $30.
Gamestop's website (which I ordered it from) used to list all of the extra things as "GS preorder bonuses," and now none of them appear.

Nvm then.
So I read on NintendoLife about a Steam game coming to Switch, and since it's I guess a horror/adventure game I was mildly intrigued, but I'm REALLY interested after seeing:
"We've transformed a series of hidden gems of Johann Sebastian Bach into chiptune retro style to create unique soundscapes. 24 minutes length of 13 masterpieces."
Lmao I'm so there for a game scored entirely with Bach
Edit: I forgot to link to the article. http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2017/06/mystery_and_horror_adventure_the_count_lucanor_is_coming_to_switch

Kimishima: "Yo yo yo, dawg, I got this hella plan to make hella cheddar. We make games with done fine honies and the big Nin-dizzle will be back on top."
Investors: "...what?"
300 for a switch when I only want to play odyssey ;-;
Really? No interest in any other franchises? Because it's actually getting quite a lot...

where are you finding it for 300? i've only seen it for 400$ at gamestop and scalpers on ebay :-(

Not really, nintendo hasn't given me much hope recently for what I like even though breath of the wild looked good. I mean if I bought one I would definitely get some other games, but If I bought it it would just be because odyssey is coming out on it. I usually just buy virtual console stuff instead of playing the new ones :p

Yeah finding a switch for 300 won't be easy for a while

Spoiler: it sucks
Eeeeeeeeyup.
Game is fun.
Voice chat is trash. Literally no reason to use it over Discord.
If you want to meet up on splatoon, join the discord server. We often get at least three people to a party.
So, we finally got details on Nintendo's Online Service (https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/), and I guess it's not completely terrible?
I'd be willing to share a family plan with some of y'all
If we price it all out it's about $5 a year iirc
I got Mario Tennis Aces a week early, and I'm streaming here in 4 minutes: https://www.twitch.tv/polarbitsgaming
