I'll claim the Pokemon League themes, both Day and Night since they're essentially the same piece, but the night one is in E major instead of F.

You're good to go to arrange the night version. However, the day version we already have on site is good as is (although, a quick check or two by someone or myself would suffice to accuracy-proof it).

Oh my bad. I didn't see that.
I'll take the night version, then.
EDIT: Question; why are the staff margins so wonky on the template? My margins are as follows:
Staff 1: 1.15"
2: 1.05"
3: 1.22"
4: 1.05"

Erm, seems like people are running out of ideas haha. Here's some of the awesome and unclaimed tracks from the ost that people mght not know of ^^:

- Jubilife TV (not too tough to arrange)
- Dawn/Lucas (Lucas is Dawn transposed up, moderately tough to arrange)
- Oreburgh Gate (tough, probably needs a duet)
- Captured a Flag Underground! (moderately tough, ridiculously fun)
- Great Marsh (moderate and also a lot of fun)
- Amity Square (not too tough, really cute)
- Poffins (a hilarious track, not too tough)

Some ideas! haha i know this ost too well

Jompa's actually done these two I'm just waiting to see if he wants to dig them up and present them :3

The rest, to the extent of my knowledge, have not been attempted by anyone.

Are we allowed to have a duet arrangement with the solo because

Contest: Results Announcement (Duet) - [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6t3uluuwass6j6u/Contest%20Results%20Announcement.mus?dl=1)

I have no idea how I'm gonna reduce that into a solo but it's gonna be pretty simplified.

SFX:
I'm willing to do all the sound effects into a fanfare sheet. Is this all of them?
Is what all of them? I can provide a list for you later if you need I guess.

Platinum is a separate game, similar to Diamond and Pearl, but with a slightly altered storyline and some new features and music tracks.

Keep in mind 14 - The Pokémon Lab will be an edit replacement. Only minor adjustments are needed.

Oh, and Snowpoint City (Night) is extremely similar to the day version (not even a key change like many of the others), just fyi. Not sure if we need another arrangement for it.

Yup. I noticed that from the OP. Thanks for the reminder.

I edited these sheets a little bit, but am still unsure about some things (for example, the note spellings in Battle! (Azelf/Mesprit/Uxie))

Battle! (Azelf/Mesprit/Uxie) - [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0pl5j2brhxnttjl/Battle%20-%20Lake%20Trio.mus?dl=0)
Eterna Forest - [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/flj5odhcfzvq30b/Eterna%20Forest.mus?dl=0)
Lake - [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kelv9kqwmaxbso9/Pokemon%20DPP%20-%20Lake.mus?dl=0)
Lake (Two Pianos) - [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/dwhe8kfe6rliho8/Pokemon%20DPP%20-%20Lake%20%28Two%20Pianos%29.mus?dl=0)

Oh, I didn't know that. Maybe the arranger of the Day version would like to do it?
I don't think we need a Night version since the only difference is added auxiliary percussion (forgot what instrument it was exactly). If there absolutely had to be one, then it'd probably be better for someone else to arrange it for variety
Title: Re: The Official Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Project
Post by: Latios212 on July 21, 2016, 04:00:30 AM
I don't think a Night version is necessary unless we're going for 100% OST completion (and we're not quite there yet...)

Anyway, feedback incoming on these. First off, Battle! (Azelf/Mesprit/Uxie) to start:
- Articulations on the intro. Staccatos would probably be good.
- Try out power chords in the left hand to really tap into some of that bass drive from the original, and see if you like it.
- 38-41 - Those dyads sound inverted.
- 62+: The RH should definitely be lower. On a quick pass those minor thirds really sound out of place - I think power chords are the right way to go, putting the RH in bass clef. Also re-check the bass rhythm in these places - sometimes beat 1 is shortened.

There's more I would like to say about this arrangement, but that's all I've got time for right now.

Wondering how you'll treat the polytonality (B major on top of probably C minor/G Phrygian) in Giratina's theme--you'll probably stick to one key signature for both staves throughout (i.e. not B major on top and C minor on the bottom), right?

(The song is predominantly in C minor/Phrygian, so at least key signatures will be fairly sane...)

Hehe, I saw big music words and I got excited.

Didn't realise there was bitonality, but now that I think about it, yes! There absolutely is. Would call it G-sharp minor because of the dominant resolving tendency (D# at the end of the phrase) but hey. And the rest is definitely in C minor - clear cadences too.

I would do bitonal C-flat major/A-flat minor and C minor, hehe. Accidentals don't make the bitonality clear enough.

That being said, you don't have a V-I in G-sharp minor; just a suggested-kinda V-I. So I guess accidentals are fine. Not as nerdy as I'd hope, but welp.

Finished the first of four:

Battle! (Team Galactic Boss) - [MUS] (https://db.tt/zBNTS2ax)

I have some places in the sheet where I have a big note saying "Fix Here!". These are small changes that I'm not making till the very last because any kind of other change to the sheet causes these to revert; thus wasting time. So once it's been accepted is when I'll be dealing with those. The notes are saying to align noteheads that are similar with each other. So, in case you were wondering.

I haven't analysed it yet but from what you said you can likely expect polytonality using a C minor key signature. I won't be using independent key signatures for each hand because that's more complicated than it's worth. Also since I'll be using C minor there's no chance I'll use B major when I could rather use Cb major. So there's that too.

I went through the whole soundtrack list while I was writing up that post, so I don't think I missed anything. The SFX section includes all tracks that are about 5 seconds long. You can check through the soundtrack list again just in case as it has the length stated next to each track.

Oh, and I wasn't quite sure what number to give to Old Chateau as I didn't notice it in the soundtrack list.  ???

About SFX:
Here (https://youtu.be/dCBOB9uLUsI)'s a (not official) compilation to check against. Haven't checked it myself to see if it's comprehensive yet. Keep in mind a couple of these fanfares have already been arranged, as they are listed as separate tracks in this OST.

Old Chateau:

Haha because I'm a little behind on things and have yet to actually place things in the dropbox folder (so someone doesn't go look at blue status and go "huh" when it isn't in the folder)

Is there anything in particular you wanted to change before fixing those overlapping noteheads?

Oh. I kinda just put my own in.

Not really. At some point I want to test those crazy low A's and see if I wouldn't rather use some percussive method but aside from that I think it's good to go. I also should say that I think I've grown fond of that quote there. I'd like to keep it if possible.

Sorry, I was a little later than I had said I'd be but here are my suggested edits:

-Measure 6: All notes should be altered in order to spell an F# major chord, rather than a Gb major chord. This will also eliminate the need for the courtesy accidentals in measure 7.
-Measure 12: Maybe courtesy on the high B naturals in the second voice?
-Measure 13: Here's where I would use a Db rather than a C#.
-Measure 20, RH: Either make the Bb an A# or the F# a Gb. If it were up to me, I would do the former.
-Measure 21, RH: Bbs should be A#s to match the spelling of the LH. If you're doing that though, I would strongly suggest some kind of courtesy accidental on the D natural in the same chord there.
-Measure 23, LH: I'm thinking that this A# would be better off as a Bb.
-Measure 24, RH: This Gb should be an F# which would also result in the following note (F natural) needing a natural sign.
-Measure 25, RH: I would rewrite the little triplet there using A#s and Gx. It may seem a little weird but I mean, it sounds a little weird.
-Measure 26-29: All #s should be rewritten as bs. Also because of this maybe a courtesy natural on the high B in the RH at 30.
-Measure 32, RH: B natural on the off beat should have a courtesy accidental on it to distinguish between the high Bb.

I think that's it.

Sorry, I was a little later than I had said I'd be but here are my suggested edits:
No problemo!

-Measure 6: All notes should be altered in order to spell an F# major chord, rather than a Gb major chord. This will also eliminate the need for the courtesy accidentals in measure 7.
Fixed. I thought Gb would be easier to read, but I didn't factor in the chords xD
My bad.

-Measure 12: Maybe courtesy on the high B naturals in the second voice?
Ooo. I like courtesy accidentals. Fixed.

-Measure 13: Here's where I would use a Db rather than a C#.
Ah, ok. I know some people don't mind C# and Bb in the same chord, but I like the Db better. Fixed.

-Measure 20, RH: Either make the Bb an A# or the F# a Gb. If it were up to me, I would do the former.
Awesome. I think an A# would be better because of the B natural in the left hand.
Fixed.

-Measure 21, RH: Bbs should be A#s to match the spelling of the LH. If you're doing that though, I would strongly suggest some kind of courtesy accidental on the D natural in the same chord there.
I believe you're referring to M. 22? Also, I'm usually really good at matching the right hand accidentals with the left hand (or vise versa). More of a misstep than something I didn't know how to do lol.
Fixed.

-Measure 23, LH: I'm thinking that this A# would be better off as a Bb.
Same. It'd take out the natural on beat 3.0 and there is a Bb in the right hand.
Fixed.

-Measure 24, RH: This Gb should be an F# which would also result in the following note (F natural) needing a natural sign.
Oh, ok. I tried using the least amount of accidentals in this measure as I could, so it wouldn't be cluttered, but your suggestions works!
Fixed.

-Measure 25, RH: I would rewrite the little triplet there using A#s and Gx. It may seem a little weird but I mean, it sounds a little weird.
Ok. Fixed.

-Measure 26-29: All #s should be rewritten as bs. Also because of this maybe a courtesy natural on the high B in the RH at 30.
Ok. I assume because of the C /=/ C# thing?
Fixed.

-Measure 32, RH: B natural on the off beat should have a courtesy accidental on it to distinguish between the high Bb.
Awesome. Fixed.

- Articulations on the intro. Staccatos would probably be good.
Done

- Try out power chords in the left hand to really tap into some of that bass drive from the original, and see if you like it.
I tried it out for the octave sections, and it's not bad. I'll keep it for now

- 38-41 - Those dyads sound inverted.
After listening to it again, it still sounds like this to me (m38/9 for reference):
I chose to omit the upper octave because it's quieter and so that it'd fit more with the following 4 measures

- 62+: The RH should definitely be lower. On a quick pass those minor thirds really sound out of place - I think power chords are the right way to go, putting the RH in bass clef. Also re-check the bass rhythm in these places - sometimes beat 1 is shortened.
I put it up an octave so that it wouldn't interfere with the LH, but I lowered it (and put parenthesis in the LH). About the minor thirds, I decided to leave those in instead of changing them to fifths (if that's what you meant). It's hard to tell what the note lengths are for some parts (particularly the measures with whole notes), but to me it sounds the same as usual

There's more I would like to say about this arrangement, but that's all I've got time for right now.
Thanks for the feedback (and sorry for the delay in working it into my sheet)! Aside from those changes, I tried adding the timpani for m18-21, changed the half note in m25 to a quarter note, raised the last two beats of m21 up an octave, and changed the last two beats (RH) of m83

37 - Floaroma Town (Day) - Latios212
Love this song.
- Might I recommend changing the 8va in M. 5, 7, etc. to a clef change? I usually try to avoid 8va in the left hand.
- Maybe add a courtesy accidental on the Db in M. 35.
- The melody that starts in M. 3 sounds a bit louder, in my opinion, than mp.

Nice job with this piece! I love when there is straight up 4 measure systems.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

31 - Pokémon Gym - Jompa
Very cool piece.
- Do you think you could remove the extra accidentals (M. 2 left hand, for example)?
- There seems to be some rests barely touching some notes throughout. (M. 1 & 6, for example).
- Flip the first layer notes in M. 53 (LH).
- I'm pretty sure the Db in M. 4 and M. 58 is a C#.
Nice sheet!

Maybe tweak the formatting a little bit? It almost seems too cramped.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

35 - Trainers' Eyes Meet (Twins) - Don Valentino
- The copyright info and website name are both incorrect.
- And the subtitle.
- There are some notes that you could add, but I believe it sounds good.

I've pretty much done as much as I can do with "Oreburgh Gate", not really sure how else I can improve it. This is fantastic <3

Oreburgh Gate was one of those tracks that I instantly loved but knew I couldn't pull off. It wasn't even a laziness thing this time - I genuinely couldn't figure out how to organise the parts in my mind, and i thought for quite a while about it before I decided "meh, I've got cooler soundtracks to do" in the way the fox determined those grapes he couldn't reach were sour. Haha.

The scoring is clean, precise (didn't check the first repeat, but y'know, I trust you and it sounds right), and very effective. Of course the transition from the section at bar 18 on to the one at 34 is...abrupt, but it can't be helped and it can be smoothened out with some good pedalling. Great writing there.

Extra kudos to your choice of tonality. I don't need to go into the details on why it's right, because it's right and the fact that it's right means you know why it's right. ^^ Spent a few minutes or so thinking about this and replaying the track in my mind, so yeah, thanks for however much extra time you spent figuring this out :)

The only thing I'd like to point out is your choice of accidentals, hehe. I'm now almost certain you score by ear, because you score relative to the sounds you've already registered in your head - that is, "this sounds like E-flat major" rather than "this sounds like the D# that played a while back". Doesn't mean anything - it's just a fun observation that hinders people who score in the way we do in terms of accidentals, hehe.

Anyway, accidentals:

You seem a little confused at b. 10 - 17. Let's start with b. 10 - 11 - you use both as D-sharps and E-flats. Erm...it should be all sharps, I'm quite certain. Here's one of those times that it sounds like E-flat something (and you wouldn't be wrong), but it's actually a sneaky Em7 (E-G-B-D#) chord. So all sharps should solve it. The next two bars are a little more confusing, because of that weird E-natural on beat 2, but I'm quite convinced that this one is E-flat major - rather, theoretically, D-sharp major - with a pedal point on the tonic. So your chord is D#-Fx-A#. Once again, all sharps. Oh, and that double sharp.

Hmm, I think that since this is a VGM arrangement and we don't follow too closely to Classical guidelines (some of those are stupid anyway), you should have the liberty to score it in whichever key you feel is more easy to read. But it's important to keep the use of accidentals consistent; for example, in b. 12 bt 3, why use an A-sharp when you've already used B-flat through the rest of the bar? :) Something like that. you can choose what accidentals you want to go with with some degree of freedom I think, but erm, keep it consistent :)

In fact, I looked a little further through the score and saw that you did it right for the last repeat of the first section (b. 41-ish)! That's a good reference point for the other two sections ^^

So um, do watch your accidentals consistency in b. 10 - 17 and the corresponding repeat at b. 26 - 33~

That's the main thing, really :)

Erm, about the last transitionary section though - I'm very curious as to why you chose to alternate octaves and single notes in the last three bars. The effect it creates, of course, is an accent through contrast at each strong beat, but I don't think the actual track really wanted that. I'm with using octaves throughout to more effectively capture the tension killing, but y'know, I think I'd like to hear you out here first~

Otherwise, fantastic arrangement, thank you so much for all the effort you put into this (haha, clearly you worked really hard on this one)! Sounds great, works well, and deserves all the praise it can get <3

Ahaha xD

It's so weird to theory-bash cool little kinda-fanfares like these :)

A quick cross-check tells me that you've got all the notes and harmonies right. Just a bunch of quick theory-fixes:

I think b. 17 - end should be in D major for the sake of theory. The Pokemon series loves some side-stepping modulations (i.e. modulate to a key a tone/semitone away by repeating almost the same melodic phrase), and I think the change of key better shows that~

The "go to measure 2" at b. 24 is...okay, I guess, but kinda weird. Why not use a dal segno? :p

Other than that, nothing much to say, great stuff :)

edi: ahhh whoops double post. my bad. forgot about it in the moment.

Well, I was going to do this, but I decided not to for two reasons.
1. It's a short song. I personally see it as a chord progression and therefore don't think it needs a key change.
2. There aren't any accidentals (except for the C# in the last measure). I know this isn't a very good reason, especially from a theory standpoint, but still one nevertheless.

The "go to measure 2" at b. 24 is...okay, I guess, but kinda weird. Why not use a dal segno? :p
I guess that could work. I do have a few "Go to Measure 2" markings in my sheets. Don't see anything generally wrong with them, but "Dal Segno" also works.

Thanks for the feedback!

This is the way I see it. Like you, Seb, I try to avoid key changes for short sections, but one thing that immediately makes me want to use a key change is when a whole section is exactly the same, just transposed. See this sheet (http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/2580), for example.

Unrelated, but missing slur from 20-21 to mirror what you have in other places. And what do you think about flipping layers 1 and 2?

Oh, ok.
I don't mean to sound offensive here haha, but do you mind if we get another Updater opinion? It's not that I don't trust you! It's that I have had at least two sheets in my past that had a short key change and I was later told to change it.

These two:
http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/1262
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jbz5gqppl7h72sk/AAD1jCAw6nWHImCgnVeTq-xBa/Arrangements/Accepted/008%20-%20Unnecessary%20Tension%20-%20Sebastian/008%20-%20Unnecessary%20Tension%20-%20Sebastian.pdf?dl=0

There are sections in both that you could technically make a key change and I had key changes originally before being told to take them out. If it wasn't for these other two sheets, I'd take your word on it : )
I just want to be 100% sure about this.

Unrelated, but missing slur from 20-21 to mirror what you have in other places.
Whoops. Oversight on my end.

And what do you think about flipping layers 1 and 2?
They both print out black, so I don't see any real need. Is there a specific reason you had in mind?

I think I have agree with the other updaters on this one. It conventional music analysis fashion, this wouldn't be enough to justify a key change. Personally from my end, I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to be contemporary and put the key change in, but I can see solid reasoning for leaving it out.

I started dancing on my seat to this, haha! ^^ Great job :)

There's no way I'll ever be able to play this, which is kinda sad, but oh well. Dang, I want to play this so bad.

Anyway, I'll be doing a quick read-through and cross-check, but for this cool little arrangement, if you don't mind, I'll be throwing in some musical suggestions:

We have wonky beams at b. 9 and 10 where a second layer once existed. Erm...yeah, it's kinda weird. Maybe you simplified out the second layer and left that there? ^^

Same for the first three beats of bar 11.

Mmmm...I'm a bit against the A-double-flat in b. 24 bt 3, LH. I think you can omit it because, yes, while you'll have to put accidentals on two notes now, this is a chromatic scale and chromatic scales follow different rules. The D-flat major chromatic scale doesn't have an A-double-flat, so yeah ^^. Plus, makes it a little easier to read. Your call though, I'll leave this one open :)

I think the last two bars before repeat could use that tension-building accompaniment we've got in the two bars before them. Even if it doesn't exist in the actual, I'm quite certain you could add it in just for the effect. I think here's a pretty good place to score the drum rhythm, if you know what i mean~

-

So much nitpicking here. Hope it doesn't cloud the fact that this is a wonderful arrangement, it's delightful to listen to, and I think it's awesome ;)

Zeila - Decisive Batlle

Decisive Battle! (Pokémon League) (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kgxm4ggrj1uxgyl/AACa9-PW3tGRg_ALVCJsZO7oa?dl=0) is finished

Another arrangement that I bobbed my head to, haha. Ahh, memories...

Crisp, accurate, effective arrangement. Love it when you pull those off. It's simple and good <3

Right, nitpicking + musical thingies:

Mmm...I'm in favour of bringing the left hand down an octave. But then I saw b. 8 and thought "hmm this is cool". If b. 8 did not exist I would have definitely suggested bringing the whole part an octave down for two reasons - it's what it is in the original, and it better re-creates the drum part, which conveniently doubles that ostinato. I'd like to believe that you thought about this already while in your arranging process, so I won't beat on the point, but just putting that out there ^^

The E major chord at b. 6 - 7 and the one a little further down...should be in F-flat major xD. By following conventions, and to better match up with your ostinato. Erm, yeah. So you have perfect pitch. Anyway, the reason why this needs to be is because you have a C-flat in the bass line, and it's not consistent. And from what I've heard and learnt, erm, if you don't play by ear it's easier to see things done the way they usually are done. Yeah :p

Same thing applies for b. 10, 15, 19!

b. 21 bt 3 though...hng. It's definitely a E-natural because it's an auxilliary note, but should you change the left hand part to avoid a false relation? My hunch tells me that you've done it right - the left hand is an ostinato and the right hand is following the rules - and that's good, but hmm, it seems to go against what I've said about your E major chords. Long chords don't follow the same rules as auxilliary notes, but eh. Maybe someone else's opinion on this would be good ^^

The last point I'll be making is on weird hand-crosses; b. 17 - 18 is a really awkward one, and b. 35 - 36 is clashy and muddy, as well as awkward. Hmm. Bringing the left hand down an octave (once again, as with the original) would solve the problem but then it brings back the whole debate on stuff. Your call again, but I think you may want to take a look at these crosses :p

-

Otherwise, much cheers to a great arrangement! May try this out one day, hehe. Good stuff~

Hey, if you wanna help me make this more playable that'd be really great! I really love this track and I want it to be something a large audience can play, I was just flat out of ideas for simplifying without removing things that seem required for the "feel" of the song.

I'm too lazy atm to make any changes now, but I'll certaintly be combing through it with your suggestions this weekend. As for if you decide to cross reference it with the original... uh lel. This is probably the most inaccurate arrangement I've ever done because I've had to do a lot of wonky rewriting just to get it to the psuedo-playable level I have it at now.

Tbh I didn't really think much of it aside from when the hands clash, and for some reason didn't think of an alternative. I decided to lower the LH down an octave, while raising the m8 RH part up (while getting rid of the lower octave). I also lowered the triplet part around m28 down an octave

The E major chord at b. 6 - 7 and the one a little further down...should be in F-flat major xD. By following conventions, and to better match up with your ostinato. Erm, yeah. Here you are, two quick arrangements to add to the list:

108 - You're a Winner [MUS] (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108749630/Arrangements/Pokemon/YoureAWinner.mus)
109 - You're a Jackpot Winner [MUS] (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108749630/Arrangements/Pokemon/YoureAJackpotWinner.mus)

I wasn't quite sure how else to incorporate all the instruments and felt it was inappropriate to have one voice and not the other, so there is an option for the performer. (Good luck trying to play at that speed, though! ::))

Ah, and I'm sorry that I haven't yet had a look at my "Oreburgh Gate" arrangement yet. I'll try to improve all those messy accidentals and odd-sounding passages asap.

Onionleaf - Oreburgh Gate

....

Wow, thank you so much for the positive feedback, I wasn't expecting such a great response. :) Sorry it has taken me a while to reply, it's been a pretty busy couple of months. I took the time to check through those accidentals again, and wanted to say thanks for the helpful explanations. It's also a relief to hear that the chosen key was the correct one - I basically used the simple rule of checking the very first note in the melody (F#), so F# minor it was to be. ^^

I've fixed up any accidentals that seemed out of place as well as added octaves in that last section: Link to updated MUS file (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108749630/Arrangements/Oreburgh%20Gate.mus)

By the way, the list of unclaimed tracks (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=8641.msg348230#msg348230) has been updated in case anyone is still interested in claiming some (more) sheets. :)

...This is one of those pieces where I don't want to check for 100% melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic accuracy (this piece is a purposeful mess and definitely appropriate for the ruler of the Distortion World).

With that being said, humans will probably play back the repeated Bars 75-77 as intended but the MIDI playback will not, and I've always thought that those bars are in C minor and not null-key-signature (I also believe that Bars 71-74 are in C minor overall, but the notation there looks bad in C minor for Bars 72 and 74). If you want the MIDI to match the sheet music, I recommend expanding Bars 75-77 so it takes up 6 bars instead of using repeat signs.

Isn't the sheet great? ;D
Quote from: Maelstrom
I can only imagine the screams of piano teachers when 1 13 year old kid brings in the sheet and says "I want to play this"

Just popping in to say that changing the sheet for MIDI playback is silly. At NSM our endgame is sheet music that is meant to stand alone as a piece being performed, not .midi files. Plus with enough fiddling with repeats and invisible jumps in Finale software you can make anything play back the way you want to. (Check out Pokémon Black/White Route 2.)

I think an argument could be made for either open key or C minor but we did decide to go with C minor. Thank ye.

To put it most bluntly, this is not going to happen. If I'm understanding you correctly, this reasoning would go to suggest that we should never use repeat signs within a piece because it will mess up the MIDI. I think that Finale correctly exports repeats into MIDI files anyways, but even if that wasn't the case, sheet quality/efficiency/accuracy/clarity should never never ever be sacrificed for playback or MIDI. It's like a golden rule, lol.

I believe this is where I'll need to agree to disagree. Coming from a classical music background, repeat signs are missed the second time around (and even the first time around) all the time. Therefore, I strongly lean towards writing out repeats if I believe they are mandatory, especially the second time around. (In my compositions, if I really don't want to write out repeats or convention says I need a repeat sign, I explicitly say that all repeats are mandatory.) I tend to write music so it is as unambiguous as possible, but wherever there is explicitly room for ambiguity, I make sure to leave those options open (such as allowed imprecision in articulation and freedom to put in your own dynamics).

I hope full Finale exports repeats into MIDI files as intended, because Finale Notepad playback definitely didn't after the Dal Segno. (Considering that Notepad playback got the ritardando right, there likely is a way to make it possible in full Finale in a way that Notepad understands and without needing to make it visible.)

- For the left hand, you seem to have added the upper voice (moved an octave down) and added it down with the bass. I'm not against this. I think it works better than adding that third voice; however, a few of the notes you have are wrong.
To get this point across, here is the straight transcription(left hand).

Obviously, this won't work in a sheet since it's not possible for a human being to play, so we'll move some of the notes down an octave:

This is what you did in your sheet, which I'm proud of! There are just a couple wrong notes in both voices. Once again, this pic has the correct notes and playable by humans, and the second pic is the straight transcription.

Also, I think that second layer you have in is fine. I just removed it in the pic to clearly show the two voices. And the eighth rests in the pic are incorrectly placed. My bad. xD
- Maybe you could add a forte at M. 2. Just a recommendation since it sounds so happy and brisk from that point on.

That's all I can see! Excellent work, Gav!

I've done an 'as-heard' duet of the team galactic commander theme, which might be useful for JDMEK5 to peek at for his presumably solo version. As-heard meaning pretty much impossible. Just thought it might save you a bit of time if you're going to do it anyway.

Currently working on Route 203 (Day) with help from Latios. I also had a go at Victory! Trainer last week but I see Lux is eyeing it up too. Idk what the best solution is but we could workshop it at some point. There's a similar clash with Veilstone City as daj has claimed it and I had a go at that the other week.

Seb 2.0 has arrived.

Thought I'd spice this project back to life, so here is some feedback.

4 - Twinleaf Town (Day) - Latios212
Yo. Great job with this arrangement! I love how you incorporated the voices and how this piece is arranged as a whole. Great work.

A couple suggestions. Nothing major.
- A couple minor note mistakes in M. 1 and 2 (LH). The G should be an E (M. 1) and the G# should be a G (M. 2).
- I believe a courtesy accidental on the left hand C in M. 4 (LH) would be helpful.
- M. 8. What would you think of adding a courtesy accidental on that F on beat 2 (right hand)? I believe it would be helpful since it would clearly show the performer that the d5 changed to a P5.
- I'm hearing this for the bass of M. 17-20.
What do you think?

But, yeah. That's all I see! Nice work once again. I'm definitely adding this bad boy to my 3-ring binder haha.

7 - Lake - Zeila
Great job hearing all those notes! This one sounds pretty challenging, but you pulled it off well.

Couple things:
- The chord is slightly off in M. 7...here is what I'm hearing.

- M. 10-17. Go ahead and double check the melody for grace notes. I noticed that there were a couple of those missing.
- You also have the option of getting rid of the repeat signs and just writing that section out. The grace notes are in different places and are absent/there in certain spots.

10 - Victory! (Wild Pokémon) - Th3Gavst3r
Nice work, bro!

- Don't forget to put a dynamic marking.
- Just a comment, not something is incorrect. The left hand throughout has a bunch of extra notes, but that really isn't an issue. Just thought I'd point that out. The only concern that I would have with that is that it could be difficult to play all those notes at the speed this song is required.
- This is just my opinion, but when I see 8va markings in the middle of the staff, to me it looks a little shoddy. Maybe you could consider using a clef change instead.

Title: Re: The Official Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Project
Post by: Th3Gavst3r on June 22, 2017, 01:38:19 AM
I'm glad you noticed the changes Seb, forgot to write an update post heh...

Unfortunately with that 8va, everything is pretty far off the bottom of a treble staff so you'd still need an 8vb if you swapped clefs. Between the two, the bass clef with 8va definitely looks better.

As for the difficulty, I do think this piece would be easier to play than it looks at first, mostly because the LH could spend the bulk of the song in an octave span. I did simplify a few large jumps though, it would've been hard to play a couple of those eighth notes :)

Thanks for the feedback! I've been meaning to rework Lake for a while now as per daj's suggestion and I've made those changes along with others in my two piano version. I'll revisit the solo piano version another day

[Folder] (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hdcb1dneckzn7lo/AACw2yF_uPQCBvar-j_yXHKca?dl=0)

In the mean time, I looked at your sheets Andy

"Victory! Trainer" - [mus] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/kuwsyonwth2gzd0/Victory%21%20Trainer.mus?dl=0)
- I didn't know how to fix the staves being bolder/larger so I made a new file with the correct formatting and copyright/game info
- m1 I separated the beam over the clef change, but it might be better to just get rid of the Eb and make the Bb an eighth note
- m4 I changed the Bb (beat 1 RH) to a G

I briefly looked at Route 203 (Day), and I think you shouldn't tie some of those notes as they collide with the melody and wouldn't be able to be sustained without a pedal anyways. Some chords in the second layer should be inverted too (like m39 for example). Also the first measure should be a pickup measure

Nice job overall!

For Victory! Trainer could somebody
- m1 make the Bb an eighth note
please because it's too fiddly on my naff Notepad. Because then it's finished!

I've updated the link to Route 203 (Day) down below to an improved version. Unfortunately, by doing so I've re-added the pno.1 restatement in every line. The intro is supposed to be a pickup line but it doesn't import it properly and there's a big space at the start :S Also, could somebody help to add bar numbers back in + bar 34 could the first F in the RH be an F flat as well!

I can't wait for this whole project to be finished, please tell me it's not dead!

That's nice! We always need people to arrange this kind of projects, as you can see, a lot of tracks already are claimed. I hope their arrangers will eventually finish them, so we can finish this project... Having this whole game soundtrack on site, and before the gen 4 remakes if possibleWich I really hope they will do,  would be nice :)

Ok so here are the links, I'm not sure its gonna work since Ive never done this before but hopefully it will - the top one is a midi file, the second a pdf. I can't find how to convert it into a mus file but apparently you can upload an xml file to Finale (thats what I'm guessing you're using?), so the third is an xml file, and the fourth is a compressed version (not sure what that means but just in case it helps)

Hope it works!
Title: Re: The Official Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Project
Post by: Olimar12345 on September 24, 2017, 03:25:12 PM
Sorry, but the site functions primarily using Finale. You can export an xml file from Sibelius and import it into finale, but it will still need a good amount of editing before it's good again, as the transfer isn't perfect. The PDF and midi files will also have to come from the mus file for consistency purposes.
Title: Re: The Official Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Project
Post by: Trasdegi on September 24, 2017, 04:32:22 PM
You can do it like this:

-Download Finale NotePad 2012 (which is free)
-Download the template here: [MUS] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/upquitt9v6dwo0f/DPPt%20Template.mus?dl=1)
-Open it with finale NotePad
-Export it with musicxml>export
-Open the xml with Sibelius
-Copy-paste all your notes in it and fill title/arranger
-Export it in xml
-Open the musicxml with finale notepad
-Fix all weird things like collisions wich can happen in the converting
-Save as title.mus
-Save as title.mid
-Export it in PDF using a pdf creator of your choice
-Post the files here

Couldn't you take a look at the pdf and xml to see if its ok or not? I've seen people move files from Sibelius to Finale like this and the result has actually been fine. I'm really sorry about this problem, I might just stick to playing arrangements rather than making them :P

Hmm, I'm clearly not the best at rewiewing sheets, but let's see...

There are some formatting mistakes (the Pno. at each line, the url on the same line as the copyright info and title/game/composed by/arranger aren't correctly formatted) and some unplayable parts (measure 3-4-7-8-9 beat 1), but that could be fixed. Otherwise it sounds great!

Title: Re: The Official Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum Project
Post by: Zeila on September 25, 2017, 07:06:59 AM
When I imported the xml file, it turned out to be a big mess. What you can do in the future is copy it over to a template file with the correct formatting and various tempo markings. Also, you shortened the game title when it should be "Pokémon Diamond Version & Pokémon Pearl Version." There's a template file specifically for this project, but there are other ones that may include more stuff that notepad lacks (such as specific tempo markings or articulation). The help board is filled with topics for templates or formatting help

Anyways, I decided to edit it for you so here you go [Mus] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/9gkv7hkf8qvuqya/Mystery%20Gift.mus?dl=0) | [Xml] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/nk3ibaofqs98zrx/Mystery%20Gift.xml?dl=0)

Other changes i made:
- The tempo should be q = 154
- The only mistake in the LH aside from the upper harmonies in the first measure is the very last note (it should be a D)
- m1 beat 2.5 the D should be an E (RH). I also added and removed some harmonies
- Some of these intervals are impossible to play, so try to keep that in mind. It also kind of looks/sounds cluttered so it might be better to just omit the repeating notes at the bottom. I left them there though and moved the countermelody to the LH
- m3 beat 2 the lower note should be a B
- m5 added some harmonies, got rid of the E on the last note, and changed the Ab to a G
- m7 changed the F# on beat 1.5 to a G
- In general you put some notes that weren't there, and a few notes were off

I didn't write down everything so you should check over it to see what's different and change it if you have any issues. Overall, nice job! :3

Btw, is there a reason why you can't get finale on your computer?

Battle Castle by Sebastian
Sounds great, and seems well arranged. I have some things to point out about the visuals though, as well as a few other misc. things.
- The very start of the song! I would suggest a high F# for that chime to kick off the song.
- Middle voice - in some places like m. 18 you've omitted the note on beat 3. However, it'd be easily playable by the right hand and you do have beat 3 present in other measures, so I'd throw it in for consistency. Check to see if it's viable in other similar places too.
- Not sure how easy those rolled chords in m. 38-39 would be to play. Maybe try slimming them down a bit?

Some comments on the cross-staving in general - it could use a bit of work here and there. A few things I noticed are:
- Beam angling. Sometimes you have the voice ascending but the beam angles downward, and that's no good.
- Staccatos - sometimes they look oddly placed, like in m. 35. Sometimes above, sometimes below.
- Stem direction - m. 50 into 51 looks awkward.
- Cut-off points for what goes in the top/bottom staff - I'd take another pass here to determine what looks the best as well as makes sense from a playability standpoint - at least, try to keep it consistent; in m. 29 F# goes in the top staff, while in m. 30 it's in the bottom.
- Space between staves - pretty self-explanatory, but make sure everything has a good amount of room. Things on the last page start to get really squished vertically.

But yeah again, this one sounds great! Job well done on one of my favorite Platinum tracks.

Looks like things were transcribed more or less correctly, which is good. But the left hand of this sheet is a mishmash of different parts from the original, which doesn't work in its favor as a piano arrangement. There's a few reasons for this:
- You end up with some weird-sounding intervals as a result of bringing the bass and middle voices closer together.
- The bass doesn't move up and down smoothly as a result of transposing up/down an octave to make it fit with the other parts.
- The independent voices are awkward to play with one hand - there's a lot of places that are difficult to play at speed because of the way things move around. You need to consider this when writing.

I can elaborate more on any of the above points, but hopefully you see what I mean when I say that it simply doesn't work that well. Let me know if you need help redesigning the left hand part - I can give it a test run for you.

I think we touched base on this a long time ago, but I'll just refresh our memory and say that this needs a ton of work. The transcription is there; now go back and find a way to make this into something someone would want to play on piano. Your skills have improved tremendously since this was first put out, so I have confidence that you'll be able to shape this one up.

If you want my quick opinion, try keeping the bassline, the melody, and any harmonies attached to the melody. I'm just speculating, but it seems there's plenty of interesting rhythmic figures going on between the bass and melody - enough to prevent it from sounding dull.

I have somewhat similar things to say as I did above with braix's sheet, but more so geared towards the look of the sheet. There's a lot of overlapping stuff, and layers that create a lot of clutter in what should be a clean little sheet. There are also a couple places I can see you're trying to shove in some things that don't fit too well pianistically.

I could go on for a while about things that are wrong here, but I'm sure you'd probably address most of the problems I'd raise if I simply ask for you to go back and clean it up - you've improved a lot since this sheet was first put out. Do reach out with any questions.

I'm confident I should be able to tackle this in a more pianistic manner now, so you should probably see an update on Lucas by next week if I don't put it off

Yeah.... it's been a while. I'll go through it again sometime soon & see if I can fix it up.

Jubilife City (Night) (Two Pianos) by braixen1264
Seems very well transcribed, and the layout of parts over four hands on two pianos seems good. (I'll double check all that later).

However, I was discussing this with Olimar earlier and we both agree that it would probably be better to write this in 4/4 swing, lending itself to the jazz style of the song better. Besides that reason, although there are some out-of-place rhythms (particularly the eighth-quarter) in the song that fit in 12/8, I think it would actually be easier to interpret in swing 4/4 because they would visually stand out against the normal swing rhythms. Right now some places are a somewhat difficult-to-comprehend mishmash of different rhythms:

As well, key signatures... just two, one for each section, should do fine. That little transitional bit at the end doesn't really warrant a different key.

- The very start of the song! I would suggest a high F# for that chime to kick off the song.
Good idea. Added.

- Middle voice - in some places like m. 18 you've omitted the note on beat 3. However, it'd be easily playable by the right hand and you do have beat 3 present in other measures, so I'd throw it in for consistency. Check to see if it's viable in other similar places too.
I actually disagree. The reason I omitted those notes is that there is a left hand/bass note played on that beat. I don't want the right hand playing those notes. It would be inconsistent to add them in since I purposefully arranged it this way.

- Not sure how easy those rolled chords in m. 38-39 would be to play. Maybe try slimming them down a bit?

Sure thing. Fixed.

Some comments on the cross-staving in general - it could use a bit of work here and there. A few things I noticed are:
- Beam angling. Sometimes you have the voice ascending but the beam angles downward, and that's no good.
Sorry. I'm not exactly sure what you mean.

- Staccatos - sometimes they look oddly placed, like in m. 35. Sometimes above, sometimes below.
Those are the defaults. I'm not sure exactly how to change them since they go back to that spot when I delete and replace them or move them.

- Stem direction - m. 50 into 51 looks awkward.
They are flipped up that way because there is another voice. I can flip them the other way. Fixed.

- Cut-off points for what goes in the top/bottom staff - I'd take another pass here to determine what looks the best as well as makes sense from a playability standpoint - at least, try to keep it consistent; in m. 29 F# goes in the top staff, while in m. 30 it's in the bottom.
I agree with this. I edited them a bit to make them more consistent.

- Space between staves - pretty self-explanatory, but make sure everything has a good amount of room. Things on the last page start to get really squished vertically.
I did some editing with this. Fixed.

@Braix: Regarding the key signature choice of Jubilife City: Leaving it keyless is a very solid option as well. Big band composers often do that for things like this. I was just telling Latios that I left my big band arrangement of this tune in open key and it looked and worked just fine. Of course, having a form that changes keys is more of a problem when you’re writing out more than one time through the form, so it’s up to you.

How's this?

Pokemon Center (Night) MUS (https://goo.gl/Pa099h) MUSX (https://www.dropbox.com/s/7cqth2n86pc7jgr/DPPt%20Pokemon%20Center%20Night.musx?dl=1) MIDI (https://goo.gl/HVrt3X) PDF (https://goo.gl/6GRcYh)

I changed the system spacing, made the sharps/flats visible when part of an arpeggio, changed some parts to be a lot easier to play, and did some general cleanup.

For some reason the mus file has 'R=ppp R= r0' where the swung indication should be....? what

there's some jumpy bits but looking at it, I can't see a better way to get them in unless you move octaves around.
