Title: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Latios212 on April 24, 2016, 10:22:43 PM
The NinSheetMusic Community Performance Project - Super Mario Galaxy

The NinSheetMusic Community Performance Project (NSMCPP) is an organized effort brought to you by the NSM community to compile performances of NSM sheets, ultimately to string together in one video to upload to the official NSM YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLiFcQc4tGynrJrj0AM-oSw).

This time, we will be focusing on Super Mario Galaxy.

Alright, here we go! Some general notes:
- As you can see, a lot of the sheets we have on site are substandard. I encourage you to volunteer to fix/replace any sheet labeled orange or red.
- If you would like to claim something to play, you can claim any black sheet, and possibly an orange sheet if we can find someone to fix it.
- Be reasonable in your claims - there's no hard limit, but don't take an unrealistic number of songs!
- I intend for the time window for this to extend into the summer so don't worry about not being able to participate because of school.
- Any new SMG sheets added to the site will be added to this list and be available for claiming. If you want to arrange some SMG for you or someone else to play, go right ahead and submit your sheets!
- Once you claim a song, learn, practice, and record it, and post your video in this thread. As of right now, there are no hard deadlines for when videos are due, but I hope for us to be done within several months.
- There are no strict restrictions on video quality (as good as possible!), performance quality (as good as possible!), or instrumentation as long as the source material is a sheet on the main site.

Color code:
- Black - Unclaimed, and sheet is high enough in quality to print and play immediately.
- Orange - Unclaimed, but sheet will need some reworking and polish before a performance happens.
- Red - Unclaimed, but sheet needs either serious work or a complete replacement before anyone tries to perform it.
- Blue - Claimed
- Green - Performance complete!

This is so exciting since it really reflects what NSM is all about!

I feel bad asking for a popular piece, but I'd love to do Olimar's Gusty Garden. Is that all right?

Why wouldn't that be okay? xD Added.

I also really wanna take Egg Planet. Been practicing that one for a while now...

I can play both versions of Buoy Base Galaxy. In fact, I already have it recorded!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdWP6caPkko

I know I'm rushing, if it's too big of a problem, I can re-record it.

Actually, I might as well re-record it, I missed some notes :( Also, I'm playing it the way my piano teacher taught me, so there's some stuff that I "changed". (it's mostly just some parts that are too hard for me.)

EDIT: I didn't see you Olimar  :o

@cashwarrior: I too have an ancient recording:

But if you want, we can split it. I'd be willing to just do the underwater version if you want to take the other.

I'll put you down for Underwater and CW for above water then~

(my piano skills are meh)
Title: Re: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Latios212 on April 25, 2016, 01:20:39 AM
Easy things:
- A Tense Moment
- Birth (must be fixed first)
- Family
- Library
- Prologue
- Rosalina's Comet Observatory 1 (not sure if we're splitting this one up)

Slightly less easy but still low in difficulty:
- Gateway Galaxy (needs a little fixing)
- Space Junk Galaxy (must be fixed first)
- Rosalina's Comet Observatory 2

Awesome!

I'll claim the following for now:
-Rosalina's Comet Observatory 1, 2, and 3
-Grand Star

And I'll tentatively claim Space Junk until the replacement is complete.

EDIT:
Also, given I alter and fix some things slightly, I'd be all in for doing a collab for the End Credits if anyone's interested. Alternatively, I could do both parts myself.

I might be visiting Minnesota near the end of may, that'd be a good time for us to do it :P

Sweet, we're on a roll! (Claiming-wise, at least...)

Also, given I alter and fix some things slightly, I'd be all in for doing a collab for the End Credits if anyone's interested. Alternatively, I could do both parts myself.
I'd be willing to help out with that! On the fixing side, there's a lot of things that need to be changed, the more I look at it. As for performing, I'm willing to give it a shot but if anyone else wants to (Noc?) that's fine too.

Title: Re: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Latios212 on April 26, 2016, 02:50:50 AM
They haven't been arranged yet! If someone arranges them and they end up on site, then we can use them for the project.

I might try my hand at Deep Dark Galaxy but it sounds kinda tricky.

If you like! There's no rule on how many times to play it (besides obviously playing through the whole thing once).

Ok, so I can use this in my defense if I send a 50-minute-long video? :P
Yeah, exactly. I would make a suggestion that we finish once, loop around, then add a finish not too far away from after the repeat. That way we don't drag on past where people would care to listen. It kills the point if we have folks watching the video and skipping cuz we're playing too much stuff over again.

I'm just saying there's a very good chance JDMEK and I will end up being very close to each other very soon
You're not suggesting meeting in Minnesota to do the collab in the same place, are you? (Not that that isn't a totes radical idea that I would absolutely love)
It's just I doubt my summer will allow me to take off to Minnesota, much less find a good place with a good piano and space to record. I mean, if you're coming all the way up to Minnesota then I'm definitely gonna see if I can get down there at the same time cuz it's a rare and awesome opportunity but I had it in my mind that this would be done using our own videos. But meh, I'm flexible and open to suggestions.
Title: Re: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Latios212 on April 26, 2016, 06:57:42 PM
Well my original thought was to just play it however long you feel is good and we can always work out where to end it later (as I sometimes do with my videos, just keep playing and decide where to fade it out later if there's no good place to end). Of course we wouldn't put in a 50-minute segment. I just wanted to keep the "restrictions' to a minimum since you all (presumably) have good judgement on how you'd like to present it since you're taking the time to perform it.

But yeah I see your point. I do think finding a good place to end/fade out depends on the song though.

The Mall of America might have a place we can record if we look professional enough.  I was thinking of using my university's music rooms though :P
Bear in mind this is all hypothetical, I won't know if I'm actually going until in a couple of weeks

But yeah I see your point. I do think finding a good place to end/fade out depends on the song though.
So, in summary, we're trusting the judgement of the pianists' for a good way and place to finish. Feel free to ask for suggestions if you're unsure of a good spot or if you want suggestions with one of your particular pieces. Or if all else fails, just fade it out somewhere convenient.

Ah yes sounds good. That works out perfect because as I said, I don't know if I'll be able to even get my ass down there, let alone before knowing when my ass is to be down there for. Lol just PM me or something just in case I forget to check back here later. Btw, instead of us deciding who's gonna do primo/secondo, I had a thought: We each learn both parts, and then, when we're in person (given it does happen), we audition for each part.

I need to play the note D-sharp in 8va but my piano doesn't seem to include that note in it's keys. What should I do? It simply skips the note for some readon.
Title: Re: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Olimar12345 on May 05, 2016, 02:05:07 PM
"It skips the note for some reason?" Does that mean it continues to go upward and just doesn't have that single key?

Also, "D-sharp 8va"  does not tell us what pitch it is. The D and 8va could be anywhere.
Title: Re: NSMCPP 2.0: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: BrainyLucario on May 05, 2016, 03:21:33 PM
If you look at the sheet music for library, it's the second beat in the second measure of the treble clef. My keyboard's sharp and flat keys simply pass over it. If i play a  C-sharp 8va note , the next note I can play that isn't natural is an E-flat 8va. The keys on my keyboard ocasionally skip flats and sharps like that so It's not like my keyboard has an error in it's production.

What Olimar said, and have you ever seen a YouTube video of a guy in a hotel or some random public location jamming out on the ivory keys? That's a public piano as well. Fancy hotels have them along with various shopping complexes, transportation areas, etc.

I think I get this now: your keyboard has the note names on the keys, and it say Eb but not D# on that key. Right?

It has a digital music staff that shows what notes I'm playing. I can't get it to show D-sharp 8va, though. which I need. If E-flat is equivalent to D-sharp then I think my problem is solved.

I didn't know that....you're sayin that a flat is equivalent to the sharp of the note that is on the line or space below it? That makes much more sense.

Yes.
Eb=D#
Fb=E
B#=C
Db=C#

Sharp means one half step up from the original note, flat just means one down.
