Title: The NSM Heroes III Adventure
Post by: BlackDragonSlayer on September 07, 2015, 05:58:15 PM
Inspired by the NSM RPG... Jub said that such a project would probably be quite a complex thing to do (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=4506.msg308117#msg308117), so I thought, why not try something a bit easier and more up my alley?

Here's how I plan to do it: users can sign up as a character under a faction (I'd prefer to limit it to six four people per faction at most; also, choose whether you want to be a might hero or magic hero). After a number of people have signed up, we can decide on which factions will represent the "good" side, and which will not (depending on how many people sign up, I'd like 2-3 "good" factions, with the rest, possible 4+, being hostile to the good faction, and any others remaining being "neutral" or otherwise self-serving for story purposes). After this, we can suggest and vote for a number of broad story options (for example, a story suggestion would be "Quest to retrieve the MacGuffin that will enable the hero to do X," or "Venture through the unexplored lands to find X that will make your country rich" :P).

Along the way, as I'm writing the story and other events that take place, I'll ask the users how they want the story to progress (e.g. Let's say there's a certain mountain pass you have to cross. I would then ask users what should happen here, for example, would there be an ambush, would there need to be a particular item or other obstacle your need to clear before you can, or would the mountain be in the vicinity of an enemy faction who controls the area, etc.). Other decisions could be stuff like "Who will be a boss-like character/powerful hero/main protagonist?" "What terrain is the town on?" or "Is the area mountainous, forested, etc.?" Again, while this project will be much easier than a full RPG (and will likely be completed much quicker), it will be less available to the users (however, if we want, it could be posted elsewhere for others).

This project will be made for the fan expansion to Heroes 3, called Horn of the Abyss, because of the additional tools and resources it offers. Kind of. To clarify, it's essentially going to go like this:
1: Basic creative decisions are worked out.
2: I start making the map.
3: When I come to a part where a fairly important decision should be made (see earlier examples), I ask the community what they want.
4: This continues until the map is finished.
5: Balancing, additional flavor, etc. is added.

The game has a map editor that you can use to create maps.

ALL RIGHT! I have formulated an official battle plan.

-Signups will be open until the beginning of November 2nd (whenever I get online that day, essentially).
-Limit to number of people per faction is now down to four, given that I doubt there will be a bunch of people signing up, and six people from the start vs. one or two would be quite unfair.
-At this point in time, seven factions have people in them. If somebody signs up for a faction without anybody currently in it, the remaining empty factions will be closed off (i.e. If somebody signs up for the Conflux, Rampart and Tower will be closed to signups).

Submissions for story will be open from the 28th to October 4th, or until six ideas have been submitted. From October 5th (or earlier) to the 11th, the story vote will be open. From the 12th to the 18th, there will be a vote to decide the good factions; the two most popular options will be the winners. From the 19th to the 25th, there will be a vote to decide the evil factions out of the remainders; the three most popular options will be the winners. Any factions left over will be neutral (i.e. obstacles, but not essential to completing the objective). From the 26th to the 1st of November, the amount of water on the map will be determined based on three options. In case of ties, the option will be randomized.

After this, at dates yet to be determined, the main protagonist will be decided, three "boss" heroes will be voted on for the evil factions, and one for the neutral factions ("bosses" will basically have more primary skill points from the beginning, more secondary skills, and more creatures, and the ones from the evil factions might be guarding something depending on what the story is). After this, construction can be considered officially to have begun. At that point, there won't really be a solid timeline, and any votes/suggestion phases will be held as necessary.

Story submissions are currently CLOSED. Submissions will be open until October 4th, or when six ideas have been submitted (if way more are posted, though, this limit will be expanded). Just post in the thread to submit, one idea per person.

When the poll is done, this post will be updated with the results.

Ideas:
Submitted by BDS: An important diplomat is captured by villains. The hero has to travel across the land, defeating the villains and retrieving artifacts that open the way to the heavily-guarded mountain prison. If the hero doesn't rescue the diplomat in time, war will break out with another country.

Submitted by Nocturne: The princess gets stolen by a generic ugly dude and the protagonist has to waste half his life rescuing someone who will never thank him.

Submitted by Dudeman: An important courier is to send a secret message and package from one kingdom to another, presumably a peace offering of some sort to prevent these two distant kingdoms from attacking each other. Fearing a possible alliance, the other kingdoms are intent on killing the courier before he reaches his destination. The heroes act as the courier's bodyguard and are tasked with protecting him from the evil armies that have been sent after them. If the courier is killed, the quest fails instantly.

Results:
BDS's Idea
- 3 (50%)

Nocturne's Idea
- 2 (33.3%)
Dudeman's Idea
- 1 (16.7%)

Not really any specific template, but it should follow the pattern of "Hero does (thing). Villains do (other thing) to try and stop them." :P

The next phase of the process is about to begin; before that, we need to do something very important!

Everybody needs to fill out the following and post it in this topic (or PM it if you prefer):

Name you want for your hero (limit 12 characters, including spaces)-
Specialty (specialties for each class will be posted below)-
Gender (male/female)-
Primary Skill Distribution (four primary skills are Attack, Defense, Spell Power, and Knowledge; might heroes must place at least 5 points between attack and defense, and magic heroes must place at least 5 points between magic power and knowledge- increase that to 7 for bosses; regular heroes get 8 total skill points to use, while bosses get 12)-

If you're unsure of any of the above and/or want me to decide for you, just leave that category blank. To give a basic idea of the usefulness of each specialty, here is a list of what each secondary skill does (http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes3/secondaryskills.shtml).

Are the horsemen the characters and are the flags the different factions?
Yes; they're organized by faction, like:
EVIL ---- NEUTRAL ---- GOOD
Castle     Dungeon       Cove
Fortress  Necropolis   Stronghold
Inferno

Of course, this is just temporary.

New poll is up. For this one, I'm trying something different- a description of what the landscape around the towns will be like, rather than merely what type the terrain will be.

why did you load a crash

what

It crashes every time I try to use the Obstacle Tool (that blue stuff you see) to generate trees/mountains/etc., but for some reason, only on this map. In the next few days, I'll try to get it to stop crashing, but I'm not quite sure how I'll go about doing that.

EDIT: Saving the map under a different name seems to have worked.

EDIT: It's back again. The Obstacle Tool is getting all crazy.

EDIT: Update 2/21/16; still haven't been about to do anything about the problem yet. Sorry.
