Title: Latios212's YouTube Channel
Post by: Latios212 on February 16, 2015, 01:55:15 PM
So I made a YouTube channe (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX6DBPwKhuZB3RecD3rHYoA)l. Over time I might put my arrangements or piano covers of NSM sheets on here.

Here's my first video, a piano cover of "The Lament of Falling Stars" from Pokémon Ωr/αs. Much thanks for InsigTurtle for arranging it and Bespinben for making the sheet more readable!

Nice! The ending was a bit disappointing, though...

I love when people play the NSM arrangements. Waiting for more.

I tend to just set it to fade out if I don't see/can't think of a good ending. But since you said that, I'll try to have more legit endings in the future!

That said, more videos from NSM sheets will come eventually. Just you wait... (assuming I can ever play these songs I'm working on well enough to be considered presentable)

This sounds pretty nice! I don't think you needed the fade-out for this one, since it ends nicely on chord I.
Is it just me, or is your piano tuned down by a semitone? Or did you just decide to transpose it down? :P
Title: Re: Latios212's YouTube Channel
Post by: Latios212 on February 22, 2015, 10:31:13 AM
Okay, I'll take you and Xaoz's suggestions and try not to fade it out next time!

Yeah, my piano is kinda old; all the notes are a bit lower than they should be, though I think it's less than a semitone. But relatively, it's in tune. I hope it doesn't bother you too much :P

Hmm, I don't really have anything in mind. That's why I don't already have one :3

It should probably say "Latios212" and "Pokémon pianist" somewhere around it.

It would be cool if you could scatter some Pokémon Mystery Dungeon sprites all over it. Use your imagination :D

MY CHANNEL IS FABULOUS!

On a side note, been pretty busy with schoolwork and the like.

Here's my to-do list of songs I can play somewhat well right now and will hopefully get around to recording in the following weeks (in no particular order):
- "Memories Returned" by Bespinben
- "A Wish for Peace" by Bubbles and Bespinben
- "Rescue Team Base" by Bespinben
I'm sensing a theme...

Also a partial list of things I'm working on, but don't know if I will ever get around to recording:
- "Dragonspiral Tower" by Bespinben
- "Classic: Final Results" by K-NiGhT

Alright, it's been 9 weeks of on-and-off work since Bespinben posted his arrangement. This took waaaay too long, but learning this song has made me really happy! ;D

I present to you the world's best piano cover of "Memories Returned" arranged by Bespinben (because it's the only one out there as far as I can tell)! Dedicated to Bespinben, of course. This is my gift, my way of saying thanks for all your arrangements and help, past, present, and future. (Everyone else enjoy it, too!)

[DS] Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky:

"Memories Returned":

Yeah, there are two or three spots where I kinda slipped up (don't be too disappointed; I'm not the best pianist and this song is long and hard!), but I've already spent dozens of hours of this song, including four hours of video footage. I'm busy to the point where I can only spend an hour or two a week recording here, and I need to move on to learning and arranging new songs and achieving other life goals so...

Boy, it'll be really hard to outdo myself on this one

I cannot believe this just happened. First Dusk, now you... the depth of my gratitude can't be expressed. You must give yourself more credit for your talent.

Highlights of this performance:
0:20 - You nailed it! What a boss. (Sustained arpeggiated grace note ftw! [or SAGN™, courtesy of Noc])
2:15 - So majestic.

Now, you know this was coming of course, but don't let my following thoughts diminish any of the above:

*7/4 pickup leading into the intro (0:00- 0:08)
~ Had kind of the same issue with Dusk's "Opening" cover -- started briskly but then instantly dropped about 15 BPM once the main line came in. I know there's ritardando and all, but it was far too sudden.

*Voicing of inner layers (0:15-0:20)
~ This was obviously intentional it looks like, but I noticed you droned the D on the inner voice instead of letting it move in parallel 4ths with the melody (ex: D-G --> E-A). It doesn't change the harmonic structure at all, but it does lose some of the texture. It also makes the inner voice a bit overpowering because the same note is being struck again and again with sustain. If you had a specific reason for this omission please let me know! My sheets are definitely always open for revision.

*Timing of sustain pedal depress/release (1:05-1:22 [and a lot of other places])
~ If you just hold the keys a little longer in the RH when you have those syncopated chords coming in on beat 4.5, it won't sound so choppy because the reapplication of the pedal will sustain it. You succeeded doing this at 2:33, oddly enough (or... could just be the lack of dampers in that register ^.^). This is really the only thing I'd be really interested in seeing improvement in for a hypothetical redux (hypothetical because I still can't fathom that this performance actually happened and I'm still giddy as a goat).

*Random thought (2:28-2:34)
~ You started off here really strong leading into that glorious triple forte, but it feels like my SAGN intimidated you, resulting in that very last chord at 2:33 less convincing than it could have been. Maybe I was just expecting to see your hands raise several feet up from the keyboard before that last chord XD
-------------------------------------

I patiently await the day you have 10k subs.

My bad. I never fully got the hang of that 7/4 time (also when the low D comes in at one and a half beats)...

Yeah, this was a trouble point for me. The longer I hold one of those notes, the less time I have to jump my hand over to reach other notes, and the more likely I am to screw up since I am not so great at accurately hand-jumping. You can tell though I tried to target this problem of holding notes while re-pedaling in measures 10-20 for example where the song is easy. Since I try to regularly practice songs I've learned, I'll try to work on this!

Hmm yeah, that SAGN took me a while to get right and measure 58 is just realy intimidating (just look at it!)... Also at this point I was just thinking: "DON'T SCREW UP!! DON'T SCREW UP!! OR ELSE YOU'LL HAVE TO REPLAY IT A FEW HUNDRED MORE TIMES!!"
I could totally try to play it that way in front of people in real life, at the cost of well... hitting some wrong notes... but it'd be fun!

If playing my arrangement was a Rescue Job...
Instant Lucario Rank for you!

Seriously though, you keep churning out my sheets into performances like it's nothing! I'm really starting look forward to when we do a video collab sometime (a la Dusk's "Hope").

I was going to ask why you didn't hold the melody through the measures (ex: 0:14-0:15), but that's probably an inevitable result of me demanding giant stretches of 10th intervals :P I think when I clean up my PMD1 arrangements eventually, I'm going to notate the pedaling as you did here ;) It really does make a big difference for the middle section in terms of the atmosphere.

(Nice special effects crew, btw)

Yeah my hands aren't huge. Those wide intervals in measures 8 and 15 on your sheet (not the video) I baaarely could do.

I love the way you play this. Out of curiosity, what do you use to record?
Title: Re: Latios212's YouTube Channel
Post by: Latios212 on May 06, 2015, 05:44:24 PM
Thanks! ^^

Well, the reason this sounds so different is because it's not my piano XD This is one of the pianos available for use at my school.  It does have its trade-offs, though; many of their pianos are too squeaky, or too loud for playing some of the calmer songs I play (I literally cannot play pp sections). And the rooms are hot, stuffy, far from soundproof and I have to wait a while to use them sometimes.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

For these reasons you'll probably see me more often on my home piano (the one in the other videos). It's special to me since I've been using it for probably around ten years, and convenient because it's at home. I recently had a guy give it a "relative tuning" as he said bringing it to concert pitch would put too much stress on it. I hope you don't my mind too much! It's still relatively in tune and Bespinben says it doesn't bother him but if I ever do a collaboration with another instrument or piano I'll be sure to use a tuned one. As with the case with this song, I'll only hop onto the school pianos when something will sound noticeably better in my opinion. At home I have the comforts of peace, quiet, time, and, of course, air conditioning. ;D

Unlike at home where I used whatever camera I had available, I simply used my phone for this. Samsung Galaxy Lite. Just plopped it on a music stand. Eventually, after I keep this up for a while, I'll hopefully figure out how to use cameras and stuff. I have no fancy tools :P

The soprano belting the high A at 0:44 in the background... I'm going to pretend that's part of your special effects crew :3 (representing mourning or something)

Anyway, lovely lovely lovely. The song, your playing, and by golly, the piano! The change of lighting and camera angle was nice too (seeing your fingers at work especially).

You made an ending too yaaay!

Gosh darn walls. Thick enough to keep heat in and turn the room into an oven but not thick enough to block sound. >:(

I will definitely try and change the lighting and camera angle for when I play my piano at home. (There's more junk around though bwahaha)

Ending! Yeah! I figured that'd be a nice place to end it :)

Good timing of pedal apply and release.

Excellent job with the section with the inner voice countermelody. The melody did seemed to get just a little drowned though, but only just a little.

Looks great!
If I may be a prude, however, just one little performance tip that you can take or leave.
Around 1:00 or so, with the percussion rhythm chords (I assume?) in the LH, playing a little more from the wrist (which it looks like you are not, your arm appears to drop a bit with each chord) gives a much lighter sound for the accompaniment, which may or may not be what you're looking for.
Aside from that little note, great job!

My god that violin made that beautiful piece stab my feels into bits.
My only gripe is that there are some inner voices in the melody that, since it's being played by a violin, can't be played. Maybe incorporate that into the bass accompaniment?

True. I threw this together in a day more to test how sound and recording and coordination and everything would turn out. I'll try and incorporate more parts next time instead of just playing LH part + melody. (I hope I'll get around to doing more of these...)

That! ^^

Finally get to watch this after eyeing it for most of the week! :) Impressive work on both sides! Looing at your wrist-work (wink) makes me want to give this piece a shot, and if you've got awesome performance devices like that (ie. pianistic elements that feel good to execute) chances are it stems from a fantastic arrangement.

Great job Oronoco for (what I assume to know is) a well-done arrangement! The piece is beautiful, and whether or not it follows the original isn't a concern when your performer has executed your piece convincingly. Great stuff ^^

Much cheers to Latios for a very clean performance (and good cover-ups, hehe), thoughtful pedalling, tightly locked rhythms, and passion and clarity of thought above it all. Sounds great, might take this sheet for a spin one day :)

Great job everyone!~

[Wii] The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

"Romance in the Air" by Bespinben

This song is a lot of fun to play, and gave me some much-needed arpeggio practice. I didn't realize how many other piano covers of this song were out there until after I had finished recording. Of course, I feel the need to make it better than any other existing cover, and well, although I'm really pressed for time nowadays so I didn't get to re-record and iron out the mistakes as much as I wanted, I do like that Ben's arrangement (which I solo-fied (https://www.dropbox.com/s/jbyxkn5eci1nkzm/Romance%20in%20the%20Air%20%28Solo%29.pdf?dl=0) from the one on site) provide a thicker texture that better emulates the orchestral sound in the original, particularly the intro. Enjoy!

Very nice, my friend. Seriously. Though if I could give you a piece of technical advice:

Watching your left hand, it looks like you have a lot of tension going (especially when I see the thumb). Drop your arm weight more and roll your wrist around some to get around. The way I see it I wouldn't be surprised if you get sore in your fingers/wrist after a while.
Title: Re: Latios212's YouTube Channel
Post by: daj on October 28, 2016, 09:55:35 PM
So I finally got of my arse to write about this after much productive time was spent on other things. haha welp who am i kidding i was gaming it all away

Long one! ^^ Cuz you deserve it. <3

Generally, great job, as with your previous cover! ^^ Sensitive playing, passionate climax, the touch of an angel (which is um, frowned upon by pro pianists but bleh this is vgm and i dig it), and generally a good sense of tempo. Extra kudos for the latter, cuz that's a devil. I enjoyed your interpretation a lot, and felt like I was floating over the world! Which, hopefully, was what you were going for.

That being said, JDMEK made a great point and I'd like to add on to it. A lot. :p

You've chosen...a very tough piece to properly execute. I listened to the original, and once again Bespinben (and your solo-fies) has found a fantastic way to bring pianistic elements in to spice up what would sound terrible as a transcription. But long string chords are infinitely easier to write and execute for the purposes of transition when compared to moving bass lines in the piano. Yep, transitions - I think that's one of the main areas where your execution wasn't perfect.

To pinpoint the issue, your transitions tend to be "washy" due to the lack of contrast. And that's a very common intermediate-advanced level problem, no worries ^^

Quote from: JDMEK5 on October 28, 2016, 07:51:55 PMVery nice, my friend. Seriously. Though if I could give you a piece of technical advice:

This is where JDMEK5's comment comes in! :) I mentioned the touch of an angel, and this is one of the reasons why you can create that tone. If all your pressure is on your wrist, then it's really hard to transfer your weight to your fingers. I'd really love to help you with this, but sadly correcting this involves a more hands-on (bahaha) approach where I grab your hand and help transfer tension. So if you really wanna correct this finding a teacher or expert friend is the way to go ^^

~

Technical issues aside, here's some musical considerations you can make :)

While I get good chills from hearing you pull off sensitive sections/pieces with your touch (see Canalave <3, your recent Kirby one), and this piece could really use some sensitivity, it also demands transitions to four subtly contrasted sections in slightly over a minute. I'd argue that executing these transitions right is the most important part of this piece, and that's where your cover slips up a little ;)

In a good score, the contrasts you need to make should be quite clear with some close reading, and since you "solo-fied" it, you're probably very sure of how the music moves and where you need to add in some extra kick. For the purpose of the review I won't check out the score - from your playing alone I've got a pretty good idea of where the sections are and how they work.

Here's some ideas on how the transitions work and how they can be executed better:

The first section is rhythmically floaty and generally gentle - you did this well and it immediately captured me. The section after that though has a left-hand arpeggio pattern that finally solidifies the rhythm. To very clearly mark the incoming section, you could gradually add more definition to the bass notes until you sink in with a firmer touch on the new section.

From that to the opening "recap" we've got a major toning down of energy, and that's what you need to bring out. More pedal smearing, right hand "fade-out", and a small break before the return (which you kinda did, so nice!).

Finally, the final part with that Irish-esque jig melody shouldn't float in out of nowhere, even though the bassline is the same. To bring in the jig melody, gradually ease up the pedalling, then add extra emphases to each strong beat once the melody comes in, especially on the first one. Because, um, Irish people do that. Or something.

(side note: zelda games tend to use this style of BGM for their castle fairs and forest minigames. basically, the peaceful places link wakes up in before shit happens and everything goes dark)

~

All that said, you can't talk transitions without talking technique. (alliteration yeaaahhh) To properly gradate little elements you need to have control of your fingers and all the other physical stuff. It's one of the toughest parts of learning performance, ahaha.

But as I mentioned, it's not nice to give you a course on technique in a forum post, because it doesn't work. I just thought it'd be opportune to talk about the road ahead for a pianist at your level, hehe. Cuz you're awesome like that.

~

To round this up, you've got a great interpretation of a tough track, and your touch is really sweet and feel-good-y. If you wanna make greater musical expressions though, it's on technique and maybe a little bit of score analysis skills. You're one of the more pleasant pianists to listen to on Youtube, so yeah! ^^ Do consider~

Whew! That was long and entertaining. Hope it makes sense, PM me if anything, and much cheers buddy :)

So um, with Lat playing lots of chill Pokemon tracks like Canalave and the Surfing (RSE) theme on his channel, I really didn't expect to see this. He's got great skill, but fast and crunchy tracks like these are ones that I wouldn't consider doing on a whim. Yet Lat sent me a file labelled "Take 1" about two days after I released this, so...wow. His hands are made for these tracks guys, hint hint ;)

That being said, brilliant performance. Fantastic execution of the left-hand part (came out much bouncier than I'd thought), lots of energy, great show. And above all, essentially no rushing. I love it, and I really respect the effort and time you put into this humble arrangement. Much cheers, lots of love man :)

Haha the funny thing is I really enjoy playing hard and fast songs as much as I do playing the slower, more feelsy songs (mood-dependent, of course). The reason you don't see more (any?) of those around is because I can't easily play them without mistakes, so I'm never quite satisfied whenever I try to record them. Feel free to ask for some of my unlisted practice videos though!

Thanks for the compliments ^^ this sheet was really fun to crank out from beginning to end - from trying to read it the first time through to finalizing the finger positions so I could nail those last couple of tricky measures! You're very welcome :P
