Title: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Jamaha on December 30, 2014, 07:09:04 AM
Let's get ready to rumble! NinSheetMusic's first Super Smash Bros tournament is about to begin!

The games played are Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and/or Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, assuming enough players are found for each game.

Bracket

Wii U

[close]

3DS
(http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/images/nsmelee/bracket_3ds.png)
[close]

Rules

Items are set to off.

All characters are available, with the exception of Mii Figher.

No customizations.

Each set is played as a best of three.

All the matches in a set are 3-stock 8-minute matches

If the time runs out, the player with most stocks remaining wins. If stocks are tied, the player with less damage is the winner. No sudden death.

The first match is played on Battlefield. The second match is played on a stage chosen by the loser of the first match. The possible third match is played on a stage selected by the loser of the second match. The stages are chosen from the list below.

Alternatively, the players can come up with another method for choosing the stages, assuming both players agree with the method.

The tournament is played using a double elimination format, meaning that a player is eliminated after two losses. Therefore everyone gets at least two sets. After losing a set, a player is placed in the losers' bracket. The winners of the winners' bracket and losers' bracket then face each other in the grand finals. The losers' bracket winner must win two sets against the winners' bracket winner to become the champion.

After completing a set, one of the players of the set should report the results of the match in this topic. The post should include the character(s) used and the result of the set, using for example the following formatting:

Jamaha (Mario, Dr. Mario) 2
DekuTrombonist (Luigi) 1

Feel free to include any interesting comments so we spectators can pretend we saw the match. You may then proceed to the next set at your own pace, assuming the matchup has already been formed in the bracket.

Available stages

Wii U

Battlefield
Final Destination (and Omega forms)
Delfino Plaza
Kongo Jungle (64)
Skyloft
Lylat Cruise
Castle Siege
Town and City
Smashville
Duck Hunt
Pilotwings
Wuhu Island
Windy Hill Zone

3DS

Battlefield
Final Destination (and Omega forms)
Yoshi's Island
Prism Tower
Arena Ferox
Tomodachi Life

Schedule

Sign up for the tournament by posting in this topic, explicitly mentioning in which game(s) you want to participate. Make sure you have your NNID (for Wii U tournament) or friend code (for 3DS) in your forum profile.
The deadline for signups is January 2nd OVER.

As the number of matches and people's schedules most likely differ the tournament will be organized over several days. Whenever a new matchup is generated, said people then have 48 hours to play that match and report the result. The tournament ends once all matches have been played (duh).

Prizes

Fun and glory. Possibly something special for the champion to wear in their forum profile.

I can help with brackets and behind the scenes stuff, though!

I wont win but I'll play 3DS for funsies assuming we can get non laggy games going :x

I would say no Mii and no custom character would be a good standard ruleset to adopt.  We should also pick a map pool since nothing but FD is actually not that gud.
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Jamaha on December 30, 2014, 02:06:45 PM
Yeah, no Miis and no customizations probably simplifies it. No other character bans.

And yeah, I'll come up with a stage list. Try to figure out the fair stages while still getting some variety. For Glory stagelist ("list") is dumb.

We'll probably just allow all omega stages and all stages without hazards. e.g. Battlefield, Mario Galaxy, Animal Crossing whatever, etc.

Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Jamaha on January 01, 2015, 08:24:31 AM
Added a stage list. Discuss.

As for selecting the stage, ideally it would be random for first match and then the loser of the previous match selects the next stage. But apparently the only option for stage select in SSBU is having both players choose and then select randomly from those. Having both players select the random stage doesn't really work as there isn't an option to verify that the selected stage actually was randomly selected.

So for the first match we can either select a neutral starting stage that is used in all sets, which both players then select. Alternatively I can randomly select a stage for each matchup. As for the followup matches, the losing player needs to inform the other player on their choice (via the game's voice chat or through other means) so that both players can select the stage.

Or we can come up with some other solution. Unless I'm overthinking this whole thing?
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: MaestroUGC on January 01, 2015, 09:01:24 AM
You're overthinking it, just randomize whatever stages we choose.

Personally I'm not a fan of banning stages, but I suppose I'm outvoted in that regard.

Post by: Nebbles on January 01, 2015, 09:14:30 AM
Just do a randomized omega stage. There ya go.

Though to be fair, I am one of those people who prefers relatively few stages other than final destination/omega form, at least for tournament setups (dynamic stage hazards are a bit silly for competitive play)

Woolly World is gone.

Just like the deadline for signups! That means we're ready. I've updated the ruleset to the first post.

Also, I generated the bracket for the Wii U tournament. See it in the first post and right here:

Wii U

Due to the number of players the bracket might be a bit wonky. Also, not everyone has a match yet, so some players need to wait for previous results before starting. But for the rest of the players?

ROUND ONE! FIGHT!

First match of the 3DS tournament!

FireArrow (Olimar, Peach, Marth) 1

Also updated the bracket, because I can.

Great game! JaMaHa wins.

FireArrow (Olimar, Peach, Marth) 1
JaMaHa (Zelda) 2

Game 1 [JaMaHa]: Super close, that teleport mind game was sexy.
Game 2 [FireArrow]: I played like shit and only won because of lag. I also learned that holding the jump button while floating prevents you from air dodging.
Game 3 [JamaHa]: Damn, If I didn't mess up my recovery everytime I got a lead - air dodging your demon while fast falling was not smart. Advice would be to mix up more grabs into your play, you could of punished me for shield grabbing so much.

Really enjoyed this, I learned some zelda combos from watching you. :-)

First match of the WiiU tournament!

Dudeman (R.O.B.): 2
Pit0010 (Pit, Toon Link): 0

Fantastic game, Pit! I need to work on countering projectiles and predicting shields.
So now I need to wait two whole matches. What am I going to do with my life?

Jamaha (Princess Zelda) 2
Echo (Prince Marth, Peasant Mac) 0

Got rekt so hard. Game 1 was just bad on a different level 'cause of lag (like, unresponsive Up-B suiciding kinds of bad >_>). Game 2  was more fun though, since it ran way smoother, and it was just two powerhouse characters KO-ing at way too low percents.
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: K-NiGhT on January 04, 2015, 09:31:43 AM
Waddle Bro (Duck Hunt, Dedede): 2
K-NiGhT (Lucario, Yoshi): 0

Not gonna lie this match was total ass on my part. Made so many careless mistakes and just royally fucked up. I SD'd twice in the second match when input lag decided that Yoshi wanted to do a Side-B instead of an Up-B. After that I just ran off the third time cuz there was no point. Good luck, Waddle! :D
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Waddle Bro on January 04, 2015, 09:40:58 AM
^See above for results

Because of annoying input lag I had to spam projectiles and smash attacks, because my neutral attacks and combos not working but it worked out in the end. The second match was indeed ass in K-NiGhT's part and I feel sorry after I jumped on him fucking up his recovery, he eggrolls to death. :(

Thanks man, I hope to face you again! for an easy victory

Dude (Marth): 2
davy (Robin, Falco): 0

Congrats, Dude!

I'm still way too predictable, I guess. Landed some arcfires and thunders (and one thoron) in the first match, but in close range, I got pretty much all of my attacks countered. I started the seccond match pretty cheap, sniping him from the distance and Falco Fantasming away when he came close, but due to not knowing well how to recover with Falco I ended up self destructing so I had to abandon that plan. Finally got the hang of the grabbing game to get past his counter during the end game and managed to score a pretty sweet KO, but it was way to late to win me the match.

It just depends if you can rely on tippers or not.  :P A close smash with Marth does nothing compared to the tip. If your opponent can take advantage of that....

I wouldn't say "nothing", but it is noticeably less than with Lucina. It's not like an opponent benefits by being hit close up as opposed to by the tip, they just aren't hurt as much. The only way they can really take advantage of it is by predicting that you'll go for the tip, and avoiding it entirely.

I think it's really just that Lucina and Marth require slightly different playstyles. Dancing blade is more effective with Lucina, because you'll do full damage for every hit you get off, whereas Marth's you'll be lucky to get his full damage for two of them. So, I tend to use it more often with Lucina than I do with Marth. In high level play, the main point where tippers come into play is ledgeguarding, since you're more able to manipulate where you'll hit people when you know where they have to land/come up from the ledge.

In most other situations, it seems a bit reliant on the opponent not also being at a high skill level to say that good players should be able to hit with the tip, because by that logic they should also be able to avoid it. The reality is that even the best players won't always get tippers, but they may get it enough to justify the non-tip damage decrease. I see it as more of a matter of preference; do you want to worry about tippers or not?

The idea isn't "Marth is better than Lucina because he has higher damage output when played perfectly." It's "Marth is better than Lucina because he can kill people at ridiculously low percents."

ya Nintendo's wise decision of relying entirely on peer to peer makes it so anyone like me on a network that has Strict NAT is fuxed.  You have at least Moderate probably, and I must occasionally get lucky in For Glory and match up with somebody that has an Open NAT, since that is the only type of the 3 that I am able to connect to.

You can just count me as double forfeit since I'm not going to waste any more time trying to work around Nintendo's online incompetence.

Yea, you autowin as does davy.  And 3DS doesn't have any method of skill ranking whatsoever so that wouldn't work there at all.  Plus, I wouldn't say that For Glory is an accurate rating of skill anyway given that it's only Final Destination and may or may not have some lag issue or another.  Mostly the FD only part though, that was a silly decision on Nintendo's part given that they could have just looked up all of the standard tournament rules anywhere.

I used the method of drawing names out of a hat, which seemed the most appropriate. I don't really see how different seeding would've changed the situation. Maybe it's more of a problem (if it actually is a problem) with the tournament format itself. That was mainly the point of the double elimination, so losing to a player with a higher skill level doesn't instantly kick you out.

Maybe some kind of Swiss system would have been more appropriate. I just like double elimination.

Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Waddle Bro on January 06, 2015, 07:56:59 AM
for results see jamaha

I guess I should come out with my battle strategies for this match. Even though it was Jamaha's first match in the Wii U tournament, I predicted him to main Zelda based on his two matches in the 3DS tournament where he only used Zelda. I didn't have much experience on how Zelda worked. I didn't want to choose a projectile-based character, but I wanted to go with a character that's agile(to dodge Zelda's dangerous aerial moves).

At first I was relieved how Jamaha had a more campy playstyle with Zelda's special moves, because they were for the most part easy to dodge and play around. I feel like I could have had the first game in the bag, if I hadn't fucked up my recovery so early on. I felt like there was no need for me to switch characters after losing the first game, because Zero Suit Samus felt like she could take Zelda well on.
And in the second game Samus came through. I chose Wrecking Crew(Omega) as the stage, because it's like Final Destination, but I can perform wall jumps.
For the last game Jamaha chose Smashville, and his last death was painful to watch as he just falls past the moving platform and the edge. I think I choked my recovery on either this game or the previous one. I'm angry at how I fell for all your Up-Bs, even though they were easily predictable.
I'm a bad commentator with a short-term memory. Should have saved the replays I guess, meh.

As for constructive criticism for Jamaha, you used your grabs much better than I did, although you should implement your strong aerial moves to your playstyle better. Good luck on your other matches, it was fun to play a great match with someone without hardly any lag!

I still don't really get your reasoning. If you lose, you have to fight against somebody else who lost next. If you won in your system, you'd still have to play somebody who won the next round. And even if you set up the whole thing to to bottom, best to worst (basically any of this is what I meant by segregating the brackets), and it somehow makes it easier for the worse players, is that really fair? That's just arbitrarily delaying the elimination of worse players at the expense of mid-to-upper range players, and that hardly seems adherent to the idea of "finding out who's best". Somebody has to be eliminated earlier on, and not to shit on those who do, it just doesn't make sense to actively plan for that not to be one of the worse players.

Maelstrom 2 (Shulk, Shulk, Shulk)

Maelstrom got the first match, it was really no contest. For the second and third I swapped fro Pac-Man, cause GW does not fare well against sword users. Maelstrom won in the end and earned himself a hard earned victory. Words describing the actual matches goes here.

Well, there are quite a few characters with slow grabs. Tbh it's what I'm most disappointed with for Little Mac. I really hate trying to develop a grab game with ranged grabbers too, because it's just too punishing. And robin, it's so much more worth it to go for Nosferatu than a grab imo, even if his grab wasn't slow as fuck haha.

But with captain falcon's speed, yes, grabs are insanely effective. I guess that's why they set the knockback on his throws to prevent any reliable combos.

That's how I felt at first, but it's easier to get used to than the way they have it, imo. It also reflected pretty well on my GCN grab game, because when your right index is just used for grabs, it's much easier to grab coming out of shield/dodge, plus not needing to move that finger around just improved my reaction time in general.

Blueflower: 2 (Duck Hunt Trio, Ness)

Maelstrom: 0 (Zero Suit Samus, Shulk)

Great match, mostly just spammed projectiles though and that seemed to work fine. Both of my characters have uber good range and great smashes. Maelstrom did very well though, he's much better than I'll ever be. XD

Waddle Bro (Greninja): 2
blueflower999 (Duck Hunt Duo, Little Mac, Ness): 1

Kind of predicted every character that Blue was going to choose, had the suspicion that he'd start with Duck Hunt after his previous game. Didn't feel like changing characters after seeing how well the first match went. Won the first game with all three stocks left, nothing much there to say.
The second match Blue wanted to play on Boxing Ring even though it wasn't on the op's stage list, but I agreed to it, even though I predicted him to use Little Mac on it after he wanted to choose that stage. I didn't care much if I'd lose, because I knew I would get to choose the next stage if I did, so Little Mac wouldn't be a problem for the last game. Again, not much else there to say, but this one was a really close game which I lost!
Chose Wuhu Island as the last stage because idk I just happen to like it. Lots of fun things happened in this match like me pulling off the most perfect air dodge I've ever done against Ness' PK Thunder slam and it felt so satisfying. Also water shuriken returned to sender by the baseball bat was pretty funny. Unfortunately Blue messes up his second stock early on by trying to recover immediately under a solid platform. I take the game with full three stocks left and there's that.

Good luck to blue and I hope you get a chance to redeem yourself!!

Dude and I finally had our match, and it was close, but I came victorious! He likes Marth. A lot. There were so many damn counters you think you were in an Ikea store.

First match: Link vs Marth

Dude beat me in this one, but it was pretty close. My Link game needs some improvement. A clash of pretty swordsmen.

Second match: Shulk vs Marth

Bless you, Monado arts. Smash Monado got me some nice kills. Went to sudden death, and I was really feeling it, and won.

Third match: Robin vs Marth

Which Fire Emblem character is better? Robin, of course. ANOTHER Sudden Death, but Arcthunder saved the day! Go me!

3DS Tournament Update!

Echo (Marth) - 2
davy (Falco, Robin) - 0

So first off, I dunno if it was our internet connections, Nintendo's servers, or some higher power messing with us, but something just didn't want davy and I to have our match. >_> Still, we persevered, and after maybe an hour of pushing through countless disconnections, we finally managed to finish our battles! So just for that, I have to say I'm proud of davy for proving that he ain't no quitter.

Anyways, here's how the match went:

Round 1: Battlefield - Marth VS Falco

A classic matchup ever since the release of Melee. Marth had to dance through a relentless laser barrage from Falco, while Falco had to avoid getting juggled by Marth's swordplay. Davy unfortunately had an early death from a failed recovery (likely due to lag), so I decided to even things out by giving up one of my stocks as well. I soon realized that I had made a VERY BIG MISTAKE as Falco immediately proceeded to wreck me with an amazing Side-B spike off the edge. Although things didn't look too good for Marth after that, some fortunate tipped Side Smash attacks allowed Marth to make a comeback.

Round 2: Prism Tower - Marth VS Robin

For the next round Davy tried to tip the scales by picking Robin. It was a showdown of generations, with the original Fire Emblem hero pitted against the latest one, and what better stage for these two dashing swordsmen than the gorgeous Prism Tower? The fight was fairly close at the start, with Robin down a stock and Marth at high percentage. But before Robin could even things up

"ERROR: Disconnected from the server"

We decided the best way to go about this was to re-do the battle, only with Robin down a stock while hitting Marth for about the same damage. Things were going well with this plan, until

"ERROR: Disconnected from the server"

But whatever, we decided to try one more time while getting our damages back to what they were. Unfortunately for me, the last hit davy did to get me to the right damage also sent me flying way too far off the map to recover. >_> Regardless, Marth's old-school tipped Smashes proved to outdo Robin's newfangled flashy thunder sword attacks, and so Marth came out on top once again.

Anyways, gg davy, and hopefully it goes smoother next time if we ever play again.

Sorry wait, lemme rephrase that in a way that doesn't warrant a sarcastic response:

Hey guys, so it's been about a week since you've known you have to fight each other. And yeah, we haven't really been sticking to the 48 hour rule, nor do I think that's really fair when some matches are so difficult to schedule. But still, a week is a pretty long time, and while I suppose this tournament will eventually be over one way or another, it'd be nice to know that you guys are actually making an effort to do this in a timely manner, as opposed to just waiting around and missing several potential times that would work for both of you.

There. Better?

Quote from: Waddle Bro on January 11, 2015, 03:55:13 PMWaddle Bro (Greninja): 2
blueflower999 (Duck Hunt Duo, Little Mac, Ness): 1

So when this current tournament is over, would anyone be interested in a doubles tournament? It'd probably be single elimination, since we'd be halving the pool of players at minimum, but I think it could be a neat experience.
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: MaestroUGC on January 23, 2015, 09:13:13 PM
Sounds fun, but given how much of a logistical nightmare this one turned out to be, I'm not so sure planning to get 4 people together at once will be any better.

Also, would the teams be randomly assigned or could people make their own?
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: K-NiGhT on January 24, 2015, 07:51:18 AM
I wouldn't say one match is a logistical nightmare lol, but having 4 people would pose a problem in that regard. On top of that, the possibility for extreme lag increases when we double the amount of players, so the room host would have to have a ridiculously fast connection.

As far as teams go, I'm not sure what we want as a group. If we let people choose, it's likely that the two best people will immediately join up and face roll everyone, but if we do it randomly, people will be upset because they're paired with someone who they didn't want. We'll see how it goes. I won't even consider it until after this tourney is over though.

Pac-Man: Game-Watch. Maestro Out.

Good set overall! Lag was a bit of a pain but it got pretty clutch there at the end.

Match 1: Not much to say here on my end. I made a few costly mistakes, Maestro got a 9 hammer which was pretty hype but ugh lol.
Game to Maestro

Match 2: At this point I was getting a bit discouraged/distracted by my phone vibrating every two minutes, so I almost got 3 stocked. Came back and took it in the end with some quick moves at high aura.*
Game to K-NiGhT
*also Maestro SD'd

Match 3: I was back in it and I went all out! Came down to the last stock and a great aerial juggle by me to close out the set.
Game to K-NiGhT, Match Point~!

Dudeman (Virtual Boy R.O.B.): 2
Dude (Blue Kirby, Meta Kirby): 0

Two matches on Battlefield.

Round 1: Dude got a couple of lucky Stones but usually liked to stay on the ledge. Got down with two stocks for me and one for him, and I accidentally got hit off the edge. Long story short, he chased me down below the blast line, but his up-special was not strong enough to get him back up. Win to me.

Round 2: Three-stock victory. Dude gave up on his last stock. As soon as he respawned he walked off the edge. Win to me.

I'm coming for you, Waddle!

K-NiGhT (Captain Fabulous, Lucario): 2
Blueflower999 (King Dedede, Little Mac, Ness): 1

THAT WAS HONESTLY THE MOST INTENSE SET I'VE PLAYED WITH ANYONE.

Game 1: Pretty good match. A few frustrating kills by Blue, a sweet Dair meteor by me, and I ended up on top! Game to K-NiGhT!

Game 2: Blueflower answered by choosing Little Mac, which is a matchup that I'm not very well versed in. Mistakes were made, Blue made some amazing reads and plays, and he took the game. Game to Blueflower!

Game 3: The best game in this set. I was down a few stocks and it was looking grim. I fired Aura Spheres that I shouldn't have at him, which were immediately absorbed and healed him. I was down to my last stock and at 100% by the time I got him down to 1 stock, but I came back with some intense air juggles and one last back-air took the game! Game to K-NiGhT, Match Point~!

Jamaha (Goggle Pikachu): 1
K-NiGhT (Captain Fabulous, Lucario): 2

Close match all the way through!

Game 1: Had to reset because I forgot to add the time limit like a skrublord. I already knew he was choosing Pikachu but I didn't want to be scummy and change characters because I made a mistake. I was just about to get 3 stocked when suddenly the good Captain went rage mode and brought it down to a 1-stock game. Too bad I was at 120% when he was on his last fresh stock lol. Could've been a very different match. Game to Jamaha!

Game 2: Went to FD and decided to use Lucario since I probably wouldn't have much of a chance with any other character. Again, this match came down to one stock but I openly admit a few SD's won the game for me here. Game to K-NiGhT!

Game 3: Third verse same as the second? Whatever. The second and third matches were pretty similar, besides the fact that Jamaha had counterpicked with Battlefield. Pikachu's recovery didn't work out in his favor on the last stock, if memory serves, so I took it away! Game to K-NiGhT, Match Point~!

Maestro won. Better than the rest, which is six people.

Pac-Man: Game-Watch. Maestro Out.

Dudeman (Virtual Boy R.O.B.): 1
Waddle Bro (Pink Greninja, ZSSx2): 2

Round 1: Standard fight on Battlefield. Not much happened. Round to me.
Round 2: Waddle counter-picked with ZSS and Castle Siege. This match was laggy. Like, reeeeeally laggy. As much as I'd like to blame it on the lag, Waddle plays a good ZSS. Round to Waddle.
Round 3: Back to Battlefield! I pretty much got pwned. R.O.B. is a terrible matchup against ZSS. I neeeeeearly won, but only because I got a lucky SD off of Waddle early on. Round to Waddle.

My wishes come true! I get to fight K-NiGhT!
Title: Re: NinSheetMelee: NSM's SSB4 tournament
Post by: Waddle Bro on February 09, 2015, 07:52:58 AM
this is why double eliminations are garbage :]

Didn't want to use my main until the final match so went with Greninja that I used last time, because I didn't have much time to practice/learn other characters.

Chose Greninja for the first game because I didn't really want to reveal my main until the finals, but was having trouble timing laser dodges and shit with him. I think I daired off-stage when trying to go in at low percentage. :[
Stage pick was on point if it hadn't been for the unexpected lag and switched to Zero Suit for knowing I could take on his cunty special-grab-spam based gameplay better, and didn't kill myself in a dumb way this round so victory was easier.
Dudeman wasn't online on NSM to choose a stage, I tried to lure him to check his PMs by waiting a bit but after some time decided to choose the neutral Battlefield where he won and there was no lag the last time. I kill my self off-stage at like 30% of the first stock when I'm going under the stage to chase ROB who was I think at 70% and hopefully kill or fuck up with a bair, but it does a dair instead which was major bullshit imo. I caught up tho

K-NiGhT (Roy): 2
Dudeman (R.O.B.): 0

Match 1: Great way to start off this set. I got a lot of extra damage on his second stock while still on my first stock due to DI. Dudeman came back and almost had me at the end, but I pulled it out.

Match 2: Pretty much second verse, same as the first here. This one was a real slugfest until the end!

now i'm ready to fight waddle for real lol
