"Monte d'Or: City of Miracles" by Tomohito Nishiura, from
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.
There's something about this piece that's beautifully nostalgic. The slightly slower tempo, lack of percussion, and half-tone higher key signature makes this piece seem more elegant than its nighttime counterpart, "Monte d'Or: Carnival Night." This piece is my favorite in Miracle Mask and one of my favorites from the entire Professor Layton series.
I rarely listen to opera but maybe it's time to do it more often. Either way Benjamin Britten was born 100 years ago so that's something to celebrate, for example by listening to this very interesting opera. I will probably listen to many more of Britten's works in the following weeks.
"The Gentleman's Theme" by Tomohito Nishiura, from Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask.
The flighty strings and epic brass make for a great theme for the Masked Gentleman and ultimately the game's climactic final level.

That was the second game I ever played right after Super Mario 64. I played them not even 1 hour apart.
We were at a Holiday Inn for some reason when I was about 6 or 7, and I was so excited that I got sick right in the parking lot.
(The next morning at breakfast I left for a second to throw up in the bathroom)
But since I was sick, I couldn't go swimming. So we rented a Nintendo 64 for the room, (now you can rent GameCube at some Holiday Inns) and I got to stay in the room playing games all day while everyone else went swimming.
That's when I played my first game: Super Mario 64, but after a while traded it at the counter for LEGO Racers, and after I was tired of that, switched that out for Kirby 64.
That year for New Year's I got a Nintendo 64. (Which by that point was about 8 years old)
Along with it we got Super Mario 64.
Shortly after my uncle gave me his old copy of Mischief Makers.
About 2 years after I got Diddy Kong Racing.
And about maybe 3 or 4 years prior to the present day I got LEGO Racers; remembering those fond memories I had of it.
Kirby 64 came with Kirby's Dream Collection but I haven't actually got around to trying it again..

Last friday our local orchestra played The Pirates Of The Carribean to the movie which was being played on a big screen above them.
It. Blew. Me. Away.
Of course the greatest part was the credits (why else would you beat a video game other than to hear the epic music at the end?) because they always break out into the main theme (and this was no exception).
As they played that final bit, I had non-stop chills running down my spine.
Out of the corner of my eye, I also spotted someone leaving as soon as the screen went black with the staff roll..
What's the point of being there if you're only watching the movie?!
In fact, a lot of people were prepared to get up and get their coats... But then they saw everyone else who could/was appreciating good musical literature, and didn't move and listened with everyone else.
My band teacher was one of the percussionists which made it extra special.
In case you're wondering, here's the "main theme" (not live to which there is no comparison at all):
They started at 00:05. Not directly from the very beginning.

I can't agree that the Pirates music is excellent. It is catchy and whatnot though, and good for what it is, but it's so overplayed in my opinion. The best Pirates music is the new themes introduced in the third and fourth film, I think.
I haven't really heard it played all that much so I can't really relate there... The best song in the whole series is the main theme though; "He's A Pirate".

Nonono you misunderstand me, Pirates is a necessary step in film music XD it's something you have to hear just because it's a classic. I'm just saying that I enjoyed it most in the third and fourth soundtracks, where the old themes appeared but were arranged in interesting ways and mixed in with cool new themes.
Sure, but I'll always consider the original theme a masterpiece. (Not saying anything less about the third and fourth soundtracks)

Hmm. I beg to differ that that is with everything. As Slow said, Pirates 3 & 4 definitely did an excellent job of bringing out new themes. There is most certainly quite a lot of substance there. But I know what you're saying with some of his other works.
I don't believe that Zimmer is a particularly good melodist, he mainly just revolves around a series of chord progressions, which isn't bad if you can do something with it. His orchestration is bland, I think his most exciting work in this regard was his work on Sherlock Holmes.
But I don't think we should derail this topic further. If anything we could use a general Film Music topic.
^yep. Check out his "Rango Suite," it's a lot like Holmes and has more substance than typical Zimmer fare.

The Rogue Galaxy OST was more interesting but the OST from Professor Layton and the Curious Village is also interesting. Accordion in pretty much every piece I've listened from that OST.

Miyazaki's arrangements are much more faithful of course, but these are more creative. I must say Miyazaki's work on Pokemon orchestra music is unrivaled, but this guy has done an incredible job of basically rewriting the original Pokemon music as a film score.

Ricky - yeah, though it is shorter. I think that while Curious Village had a few great pieces (Professor Layton's Theme, About Town, End Theme), the overall impression was not as good because the majority of the pieces are kind of forgettable. Probably because they all basically have the same instrumentation more or less. The series' music gets better with each game essentially.

I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who posts in this thread anymore, but I'm currently in love with MadWorld soundtrack. I understand that no-one on the forum likes rap, but even if you don't, you might want to give it a try.
This song has a great buildup, and it seems that the singer is making chainsaw noises as he sings it, which is a nice touch, as the main weapon in the game is a chainsaw. The Lyrics don't make much sense at first, but it becomes clear on what they mean as you play the game.
But seriously give this a listen.

Anyways... The Flaming Lips are pretty cool, and probably the weirdest musicians ever. Besides Bjork, anyway.
Today I decided to dedicate the next couple of days to listen to (and look through) every single one of the 500+ compositions Ilio Volante has ever composed, just to see if there's anything good. He has put every single one of his scores on free-scores.com so it's easily obtainable. He has written at least something from like every single musical genre there is.
Even though it actually is pretty crap I kinda like his saxophone concert, Esselunga. His marches are eargasmic, and his big band stuff is catchy. His sax quartets are very good, and all his orchestral stuff is pretty great too.
I'm very tempted to bring some of it to school and find some ensemble to play it with. The big band has already played three of his songs.

Well those topics definitely apply to me. I live out in the middle of nowhere. But it was more of a joke than anything. I'm just saying for the most part I've seen more variety in lyrical subjects in country than with any other genre.
You obviously haven't looked deep enough elsewhere. Most modern popular music isn't exactly Shakespeare, but there is variety out there.
On the flipside I've been listening to a fair bit of Al Jolson lately, it kind of makes me want to cover a bunch of his old standards.
If you want lyrical variety folk, americana, underground hip/hop, and the stranger varieties of alt. rock are the way to go. Or just combined all of them and you get this:

Oh none taken! I actually posted that particular track because I didn't know what to think of it at first and realized I liked it earlier today. It's nothing like what I usually listen to which is why I thought it was noteworthy haha. My piano professor got me an iTunes gift card as a thank you for accompanying a saxophone player in a recital a month ago or so, and I used the money to buy Joe Hisaishi's score for The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Ugh it's so good. It's not nearly as blatant as Hisaishi's other music, but it has this awesome reflective and earthy quality that I just can't get enough of.

It's very much possible. Like in most piano-arranging cases, it's likely that including every little thing in the sheet would make it unplayable (like the times where the flute-like long notes come in), but you'd just have to be smart about not excluding anything essential. This definitely isn't the universe's hardest song to arrange to piano.

The melody is reminiscent of music from the 1950s and the 1960s (e.g. The Byrds). But once the lyrics come in, it's something to make someone from the 1950s want to flip off the radio, as it is a blatant reference to cunnilingus.

Chopin's second scherzo is probably my most favorite piece of his.
I don't think I could call it my favorite work of his, but the B flat minor scherzo is a lot of fun to play and listen to (I mess around with it every once in a while).
I've always preferred Chopin's more bombastic works, and the second scherzo always struck me as an indication of the kind of music he would've written had he not been so sickly all of his life.
Liszt to me seems like the embodiment of those kinds of works. He too, however, wrote beautiful pieces (Liebestraum 3 comes to mind, partially because I'm studying it :P)
Liszt is one of my top three. His piano style shapes a lot of my own various works for the piano (in case you couldn't tell). Though I'm more partial to his orchestral works.
Liszt is great, as is Rachmaninoff for that kind of composition. You may also like the Chopin Etudes, as well as the Liszt ones.

The Sm4sh track wasn't a remix, but an edit so it looped sooner and sounded much worse. Kind of like the Engage the Enemy track (Xenoblade) was ruined, but not quite as bad.
Ah, I see, Nintendo did that with a few songs like Gaur Plains which is also dissappointing but Id sounds alright looped like that, I'm considering replacing it with another song once song replacement becomes available to the public.

I'd say remix: many of the sounds are switched out and some are gone, and in general the sound quality is many times worse.

Yes that first theme sounds really different from the rest. I thought it sounded like some Russian folk song, which make sense since Tetris is somewhat Russian. However the song you showed me seems to be Italian.
the original Tetris for the NES was created by Tekken, a Russian company. They had a limited manufacturing run, making the Tekken brand tetris fairly rare.

That guy has some good tremolo technique, but as JDMEK5 said it isn't the hardest technique, at least not on one note only, make sure to switch fingers like 14321432 etc., that's the key.
A lot of piano composer such as Liszt, Alkan, Chopin etc. used it in their compositions and here's an example of the technique being used in a much more difficult piece:

As you can see by the fingering, you alter between fingers to make it a smooth movement for your hand.

Wouldn't really be fair, either, as I actually have read through it at least a dozen times (and listened to it at least thrice that) so it won't be all that hard for me.
If you're using a good fingering you should be able to avoid having to use weak finger trills for this one. Which spots do you mean? I actually don't remember any such passages in the nocturne...
Around 2:23 and the such. Although I guess I don't have to follow that suggested fingering in the video.
That fingering is crap. 4-3 makes no sense there, you could just as easily do 1-3 (the best possible fingering for basically any trill, especially black to white).

The reason they are not on site is because I had planned to complete the ENTIRE soundtrack before submitting any of them. It would be extremely painstaking to submit 70 songs on a 2-a-month basis, going through the normal route of submissions, so I had thought to complete the entire OST and request a "special update" be made (much like McDucky's recent special update).
Also, feel free to do ANY song you feel like, even ones I've already done. These sheets were made when I was still new at piano and arranging in general, so I'm confident that one with your well-trained background would give these masterpieces the justice they deserve.

The SAO video just got taken down, so I don't know how similar/dissimilar it is.
However, speaking from a purely statistical standpoint: with so much music being produced on a global scale for different mediums, and how music in general is created in a manner that has only a finite number of possibilities, I'd say it's at least somewhat likely that something like this could happen. The melody of each song is also very simple, going in series of three with only the last note differing (it's actually D ->F ->C, D->F->D, D->F->E). I wouldn't be surprised that two people came up with that melody independently.
Did a composer in Japan happen to notice a melody from a Norwegian TV station and decide to make a full song out of it? Maybe. But I think there's enough evidence to suggest that it's just pure coincidence. Plus, cases like this do happen quite a bit. Take Kelly Clarkson's recent song "Heartbeat Song" (0:55) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dv42fSduZE4) and compare it to Jimmy Eat World's "The Middle" (0:33) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV-HPOHu8mY). Heck, you can probably search for "suspiciously similar songs" and find hundreds of other examples. But, I digress.
...though I will admit that SAO being similar to Mirai Nikki is probably a little bit more than just pure coincidence.
You have a point there ofc, but in this case, these three versions of the music uses the exact same ostinat, in the same key, in the same tempo, using the same synth-ish sound font - basically, it is 100% the same, so I can't see how this can be a coincidence.
There's pretty much no way two animes stole this from a Norwegian TV channel, so my guess is that it's stolen from something else prior to this even. But what makes this weird is how these three tracks aren't the exact same, apart from that ostinat (though they are still very similar).

A lot of Schumann's music seems to be incoherent rambling... but this stuff is great.
Schumann is probably the best romantic piano composer, or at least he's my favorite (unless you count Debussy as a romantic). His music is full of interesting colors or odd touches.
I think the first Sibelius piece I heard was Finlandia. Immediately after hearing that played in that one music exam extract, I went back and took a listen to pretty much the whole Sibelius symphonic collection.
Maybe it's the whole thing about nature and pixies and mysticism and what-else-not, but hundreds of hours of reading, equal amounts of listening and analysis, and a frikkin research paper on his Fifth and Seventh later...I still don't know what makes me love this guy's music so much. He's one of those Classical composers who will always stay so, so close to me. His use of textures is so subtle, yet so dang beautiful. Argh.
The Sixth is one of his best works, aaaand its first movement is probably my favourite movement from all his symphonies. D Dorian, more pixies and spiritual shit, string textures and the boldest pedal points in the world...and we have ourselves something beautiful <3

I feel like Rubinstein is underrated as a technical player. Here he is belting out the Chopin B flat minor prelude in
less than a minute more or less successfully, and yet I see him criticized all the time for not recording the etudes.. (though he played many of them and it's documented and available on YT).

Rubinstein gets kind of hammy at times, I feel. But he's still a great performer of Chopin.

I agree he's not perfect, and definitely has his faults, but I feel he gets kind of overlooked for the new players, for example Daniil Trifonov (who's very good with most of the stuff he does but not so much with Chopin).
With individual pieces, there are often times better individual recordings, but I find that on average, he's nearly impossible to beat (probably the only one close being Krystian Zimerman IMO).

Well I was trying to find the name to a popular circus song with the xylophone as one of the main instruments and I came across this video and it's actually very interesting!
So I look up instrumental heavy metal so I don't look silly the next time I compose another heavy metal(-like) song, then I starting hearing this:
Hot diggity, I want to transcribe this song. Song's great fun, harmonies sound easy enough to extract, it's highly sectional (i.e. after I figure out 4 sections' worth of music, I can copy-and-paste all over)...
...On another note, I wish the titles on those embedded Youtube videos would show up again without me pressing "Play" on them.
It just boggles my mind that a song like this is in a game about a duck trying to get money.

I'm really loving this ballet score "Rabbit & Rogue" Danny Elfman released recently, particularly the second and fourth movements:
This movement, "Frolic," has a lot of really quirky and unexpected rhythms that make it really fun to listen to. The main theme it messes with throughout kind of doesn't ever stop going, making it a sort of perpetual motion machine that never stops to breathe, which is of course pretty exhilarating and exciting to hear. The piano lines here are just so playful.
This piece, "Rag," uses a really great ragtime style theme that it plays with throughout (I especially love the really slow, suspended section where you hear the theme at half speed--it's just a really dreamy lovely atmosphere).

The Wonderful 101's OST--all that patriotic stirring music gets to me, and they actually do use recurring motifs reasonably well--but I've found VERY few remixes of any of its songs, and for good reason: it's like transcribing orchestral music without any sheet music.

I'm really curious to just how in-depth you've gotten with some artists and bands. Music in general has a long history of garbage lyrics, so it's not exclusive to Pop music; and I know of several people who would use less common chords and progressions regularly.

I'm loving that FFVI soundtrack. <3 I don't think it's a fantastic game as much as...um, Chrono Trigger (haha) and maybe Earthbound to a smaller extent was. Right now it seems like the plot is moving around too much and the characters pop in and out of existence to say a bunch of funny lines. Oh yeah, the dialogue is a bit shoddy for a 1994 game too haha, especially considering...yeah, Chrono Trigger.

I suppose it is kind of a sound you need to be "predisposed" to in terms of your musical tastes (a lot of people prefer more conventional or smooth voices, like you seem to have expressed), but I find that there's just so much brilliant instrumentation in each and every song, and Bowie's voice is just as much an instrument as anything else. Every song is a unique story and contains so much emotion (well, not
every, but I think this wording gets the point across). Just listen to the isolated vocal track for Five Years (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8ND00HUUFs), and then the full song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MR2nKL_qo4) to know what I'm talking about. It's definitely not his best song, or even taken by itself the best song on the album, but in the context of the whole album it leaves a powerful impression.

Personally, I'm not very into modern music as much (pop-wise). I do agree that Beatles are much easier to listen to that some other bands. But everyone has different tastes. For example, I'd rather listen to a Hans Zimmer soundtrack over any "popular" music made this decade any day.

Yeah...when ever it comes to stuff that is "classical"/orchestral, I think I prefer stuff written sometime after 1900. My piano teacher keeps pushing for me to play more "classical" pieces, when really I'd like to play the songs I find on NSM and Musescore.

"Heahea City (Day)" by Hitomi Sato. In my review of the Pokémon Sun & Moon soundtrack in my thread in the music board, I listed this tune as an example of Sato's knack for melodies that are "improbably memorable," and I feel like that's a really apt description of her style. I'm not sure why that trumpet line sticks in my head so much, but this track and its night counterpart are really two of my favorite Sato pieces from the new games.

I've actually played "The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions." It's included in one edition of Hoyle Puzzle & Board Games (http://images.ucomics.com/images/uclickgames/1bb72cdcd633d72744175707e64db788/puz08_2.jpg) that came free on a disc for one of our old laptops (still have the disc! Listening to all of David Bowie's studio albums from the first to the last. I just finished Tonight, and I have to say, it's actually not a bad album, despite all the negativity I'd heard around it. My enthusiasm kind of fizzled out after Let's Dance (IIRC, the only albums I haven't already listened to before were Tonight through Hours), but I was pleasantly surprised by songs like "Loving the Alien," "Don't Look Down," "Blue Jean," and "Tumble and Twirl" (the first and last of those four especially; I should start a music review topic or something since I'm really getting into this). "God Only Knows" is kind of an iffy cover, but then again, I feel iffy about the original anyway so I don't think anything but a stellar reimagining full of vigor and emotion (spoiler: it's not) could have done much to make me like it any better.
Also listened to the 2010 Harry Maslin mix of Station to Station: while the album still doesn't reach the top 5 for me, it gave me a bit more of an appreciation for the album and really is a great mix that highlights the full depth of sound the album has to offer (seriously, maybe it's just me, but all the layers feel a lot more crisp, distinct, and almost tangible; though I still think the title track would be better if it were a tiny bit shorter! 6:30 or so would be ideal, but I could settle for right around 8 minutes at most).
After that, I'm not sure. Might listen to The Lost Recordings (Jim Croce), sift through some of the Freezepop stuff I haven't listened to yet, or maybe The Best of Bread (I hadn't heard of them at all until I started actively searching for more 70s music to play on my radio show the last two semesters, and since I found it and gave it a "casual listen," I've been meaning to give it a much more serious listen and see if it's worthwhile or just a band with a funny name). I dunno. It's all up in the air from here.
EDIT: Wait. Forgot that Chuck Berry's new album is out already. So that's probably next.

I'm mostly joking but yeah atonal composers are what I'm a fan of right now, and weirdly I've been listening to a lot of Beethoven as well. I'm convinced that Sonata No. 29 in B-flat "Hammerklavier" is the greatest piece of piano music that will ever be written. Next time you have 45 minutes or so, listen to it. And follow along with the score (you can find it on IMSLP if you don't own a copy).
The first time I heard that piece, I was reading along with the score. About halfway through the first movement I started crying and literally just kept crying on and off throughout the entire sonata. The fugue movement at the end especially really shook me up. I joke about having had enough of tonality, but the truth is Beethoven has this very strange spiritual power over me. Anyone who knows me knows I'm an atheist, but I legitimately believe there is something supernatural about Beethoven's music. It's the closest I get to feeling like I believe in a god.

Good volume contrast, fine sound quality, and I like this piece. Not quite in my Top 5 Concert Band Music, but might make it into Top 10 for me. I remember listening to another band playing this live.
3:03-3:10's one of the best parts of this piece, IMO. I keep imagining protagonists escaping from other characters when listening to it.
This is one of the best covers of a song which I consider to be "uncoverable" (the song was made by and for Croce, and anybody who tries to imitate that will always fall short, like someone trying to wear a suit tailored for someone of a completely different size. Seriously, I haven't heard any good ones aside from this one, especially among those listed on Wikipedia; special props... err, dishonorable mention, I should say... to the absolutely awful Frank Sinatra version which gets every single part of the song wrong). There are previews for a new Fire Emblem Arrangements CD with some great tracks: Trouble(fe1), Holy War(fe4), Mila's Divine Protection and Where the Road Ends(fe2+15), Companions (fe7) to name a few. Even some new vocal arrangements with Yumi Kawamura who's known for her vocal work in Persona 3 OST! Definitely can't wait til the full tracks get released, hopefully I can figure out how to buy it and ship it overseas too.

IMO, that piece works for Rousseau due to its being dazzling and its tendency to be slightly dry. I listened to his rendition of the 2nd movement of that same piano sonata (a normally cute minuet/scherzo), and it was absolutely wooden.

Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist was a comedic, wild west themed, computer game created by the minds of Al Lowe and Josh Mandel for Sierra Entertainment in the early 90s. Seeing a near non-existence of western-themed games at the time, Lowe decided to put in an entry of his own. The game really captured the feel of the timeline it took place in, and the music composed by Aubrey Hodges, who you may know as the composer for the later released
Doom 64, further immersed you into the game world.
Recently, I found that a YouTube channel known as LiveMIDI had taken the music from its original format and remastered it with a new sound that did the soundtrack a huge amount of justice. For those looking for something new or different, boy do I have a soundtrack for you! Earthworm Jim 3D was a an platform game similar to the likes of Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. The series was always out there when it came to its characters and concepts. The music, I felt, was always a joy to listen to and this game, though it isn't held up as highly as the rest, has one of my favorite game soundtracks. It has so much variety and each tune goes with each level so well. I definitely recommend this soundtrack to anyone who reads this. Enjoy!

P.S. "Jim's Brain" is the only ambience track for those who want to skip those sorts of things.
I've started listen more lately to like (primarly 80s) rock/metal. I used to listen to metal when I was younger, but then moved more towards classical music later on, and I kind of had a bit of weird notion that I had like grown up by listening to classical instead of metal, and become more sophisticated, intelectual, and just "better", like I've grown up from it. And thought that it was like bad that I went back to it. But honestly then I kind of ditched that thought as mostly it's just good music (that I sort of went back to). I also noticed that a lot of the music from the 80s, and other culture in general (movies, games) were really good. Before I used to think that it was only the rock music that I listened to that was good, but now it almost seems like all kinds of culture from that era was good.
I also listen A lot to rebeccaEtrip's arrangements. Those are just incredible!
