Title: Bloop's Compositions
Post by: Bloop on November 11, 2012, 02:04:33 AM
Most of my time spending with Finale is making my own compositions, and I thought I should put them here. It's going to be quite a list already, so I don't really use the

If you haven't guessed by now, some of my songs are lacking lyrics (and good titles). I would appreciate any help for lyrics and titles, because I just can't think of anything good.

Let me take a look at them for a little bit and I might come up with something :)

Hey, for that first song, what do you think of "Retreating From the Horizon" as the title?

Instead of facepalming, one could move along a conversation by responding appropriately to another's confusion.

? Your response really has no meaning since I do not understand what it meant, aside from being tied to the original post.

Wow totally forgot this topic for a few days

i mean that meldan100 is his youtube username.
is it your youtube username bloop?
just wondering.
Yeah, my username here on Ninsheetmusic is Bloop, but on youtube it's Meldan100. Meldan is an acronym of my name (Danny) en my sister's name (Melissa), because the account was used to be for us both. My sister made her own account, so I kept meldan.

Hey, for that first song, what do you think of "Retreating From the Horizon" as the title?
That sounds like a cool name! I'll use it.

What does "EDIT" mean?
It's the modify button at your posts, to change them if you make a spelling mistake or whatever you want to change in your post.

EDIT: New song also! The title is just something that fits in the song sometimes. No lyrics.

Dudududududududududududududu ONE DAY YOU'LL BE FINE.

Bloop you are really good!
But I think it'd be nice if you included some other instruments as well, just to make some variation from the standard band ensemble :)
Like for example a trumpet or a bugle, playing the main riff now and then, or a solo between the verses - that would be amazing!
Title: Re: Bloop's (New) Compositions; Two new songs, both Lyrics!
Post by: Bloop on December 24, 2012, 02:16:44 PM
Crazy Clock Remix and One Day You'll Be Fine included other instruments too, but it's a nice tip. I only have one song in progress now, so I probably could make some other new ones.

For the ones who didn't knew, I've added a poll where you can vote for your top 3 favorite songs. Since there are probably more songs to come, you can choose to edit your votes. When I feel like it, I'm going to record three finished songs. (and maybe those unfinished compositions...)

That one song you called "Song" - at the beginning - did you copy the chord progression from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZbKx2XHW28)? I mean, it's even in the same key :P
It was a really cool song btw!

I actually didn't knew that song. The chord progression is used pretty much. I used some parts from this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEoJj5dRIEg) song I made a while ago (don't read the description it sucks!)

I don't know if it's that cool for copying an exact chord progression, but I do copy parts of it sometimes. I usually make them myself, and are probably used in older songs.

I think you could need a cup of tea, Bloop..
Your last four songs were very very dark! They were all good! But they were really really dark, and agitated. Huge contrast to your other songs. Not in a bad way, it's just that it was a bit scary when coming from you :P
Like, even one in 7/8. twisted!

Nah, now I feel mean...
Great songs Bloop!, four songs that just happened to be heavy and dark :)

Thanks! Yeah, I don't feel that non-dark this time. Night at the Carnival isn't made during the "dark era" however, just a remix from my first song I've ever made. The very first.

EDIT: I fixed One Day You'll Be Fine. Fixed things are in the description of the video.

Y'know chord progression.
251 is a way to build up the chord progression, and you used plenty of it. It's all about dominants and thirds leading to dominants and so on.. :)

In your case:
The song is in A minor, so you chorse to start of there. The first chord change isn't anything special, it's just the minor third chord, which is C major. But C major leads to F major, because the third in C, E, leads to the first in F, F. Then F leads to Bb major, because the third in F, A, leads to the first in Bb, Bb. Can you see the pattern so far? We have C - F - Bb. If you take Bb as a starting point, in other words the 1, then C is the 2 and F is the 5 --> 251. This continues --> After the C, the F and the Bb comes Eb major. The third in Bb, D, leads to the first in Eb, Eb. F Bb Eb = 251. Then Eb leads to Ab(because of the third, G), then Ab leads to Db(because of the third, C) --> Eb Ab Db = 251. After that it goes to a C, but that isn't a part of the pattern (which you can clearly hear -> it kinda takes a weird turn at this chord -> so that means the pattern was broken). And then you're back to the start A minor.

Ah, alright. I didn't even knew I did this exactly. I always have the 'term' "that chord of that chord" in my head. I would suck as music teacher.

Title: Re: Bloop's (New) Compositions; New song! (Lyrics)
Post by: Jompa on January 22, 2013, 09:05:40 PM
Oh neat! That one was cool!

I think I should teach you a little trick, that applies to these kinda calm songs:
When the bass plays the bottom note of a chord (which it does very very often), the lead should avoid playing the same note at the same time (I'm talking long notes now). If this happens when you are writing, then it would actually be best to change the lead, not the bass. That's the way it sounds best.
But at the end of a theme (like after 8 or 16 or 12 or whatever measures,) where it is most natural to end the melody, it is ok to end the lead in the bottom note of whatever chord it may be, together with the bass that is. Doesn't even necessarily have to be the tonic chord, just the last chord of the "part". It creates a signal for the listeners, that it will move on, so it isn't so attractive to have this anywhere else before the last chord (unless you want that weird effect).

Of course, this doesn't necessarily apply every single time.
It is just a trick to make stuff sound better.

But, since you're singing about love and feelings and all of that cute stuff, your lack of a super-badass guitar solo really pisses me of... <3
That goes for many of your awesome songs, actually.

Oh damn. The original idea of the poll was that you can change your votes, because you might like a newer song more than another... Turns out you can't. :-\. I can't delete the poll or change the voting style.

Two new ones! I like them I lot myself.

Btw, a small idea I just came up with for the poll; What if I reset the poll every first day of the month and make a post with the top 3 songs from the month (or put them in another spoiler tag in the first post)?

This, Bloop - is a musical masterpiece!
It is splendid, amazing!

The only critique I have isn't even something you should bother with!:
don't care about this, I just feel obligated to because I am a wind instrumentalist..
I just want to point out that when one writes for piccolo, it is usually playing in very high register. The register you have chosen here for the piccolo is in an area where the piccolo wouldn't even be audible.
I would suggest moving the piccolo part up an octave (at least) - and where you don't think this fits, you should just remove the piccolo, because having it playing in that low register together with the other instruments is pointless; no one would have a chance of hearing it, and the piccolo's role is up in the altissimo register anyways, so it wouldn't be any reason to use a piccolo there in the first place - the flute would be more appropriate.
And if you are worrying about the piccolo's register: it can go EXTRMELY high! So that shouldn't be a problem!

Then there is the voice - I don't really know too much about singing, but at measure 93 to 101 and 117 to 125 it is going very high isn't it?
I mean, it's probably no problem for a woman soprano, but a woman soprano could have trouble with the low part - I know sopranos have trouble maintaining a nice sound in the low register.
I think the contrast between the super high part and the low part is too big for one normal singer's register to cover it properly. And it also limits it to a woman singing, too (unless that's what you were going for).
Might not sound as epic, but I think you should change it to one octave lower at measure 93-100 and at measure 117 to 125.

Also, the trombones (again, this is totally unnecessary to change, but I am obligated to point this out):
A normal tenor trombone (which is the normal kind) aren't supposed to be able to play under low E. I know lots of trombonists, and I have an understanding that there is a pedal register where one can reach the lower notes, however this is quite hard and uncontrollable.
At some bass riffs you go past the low E.
I would suggest changing the second trombone to a bass trombone (just like a normal trombone, but designed so it can more easily reach the lower register), because then it wouldn't be a problem for that trombone.
And the first trombone should be changed up an octave where needed! I know it sounds a bit stupid to say this; but it will sound as epic! I promise!! :D

Other than that is seriously is a musical masterpiece!

When I was writing this song, I wrote the piccolo one octave higher when I clicked "Display in concert pitch". When turning it back into the normal pitch, Finale replaces the notes an octave lower than played (I guess for ottava-saving purposes). I manually did this the same for the horns, because those were pretty high in their normal pitch, and I was sure it wouldn't sound as great as it is now.
Btw, this is also the case in the contrabass and the contra bassoon, but the notes are an octave higher as played.

Then there is the voice - I don't really know too much about singing, but at measure 93 to 101 and 117 to 125 it is going very high isn't it?

I'm doing this stuff more often for the 'epic' feeling: I see my compositions as a first draft. When this will ever be a real song, I would write the higher parts (First 2 couplets + 93-100 and 117-125) an octave lower. The singer could just song with more feeling.

Also, the trombones (again, this is totally unnecessary to change, but I am obligated to point this out):

I wasn't really aware of this. I'm always trusting the wikipedia pages for the ranges of instruments, and just hope they're probably right. But I listened to a few measures of the song with the first trombone written an octave higher, and I don't really like it. The attack of the trombone isn't as powerful as it should be (or as I'm used to when making the song). So I guess they're both bass trombones, then?

But thank you for the compliments! I really appreciate it. I'm happy at least a few people are listening to my songs.

I've got some feedback for you're "timid" piece.

-For starters, I was wondering why you titled this song "Timid". I know that the lyrics talk about having a lack of courage and what-not, but The MUSIC doesn't reflect it. In other words, only the lyrics are timid. Nothing more.

-As for the trombones range, it's tricky. The tenor trombone can play down to the E natural below the stave, then chromatically from the Bb below the stave down to the F. For tenor trombone, this is purely an effect, as it is extremely hard to control with a good sound.  With an F-attachment, things get easier. Now you've added the notes chromatically from low Eb-C,. the low B natural is only possible with a bass trombone, as it has a second valve which adds the necessary tubing to acquire it. Take a look at this (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59554832/Trombone%20ranges.mus) chart I made.

-The piccolo is down-right too low, even when transposing. That range would be better for flute. On that note, be careful with low flute. It can be easy to lose their sound down there.

-Is there a reason that you've written the violin II part higher than the violin I? It just seems odd...

-Your horn part is too high. I wouldn't write above a written E. (though some professionals can go higher, but I wouldn't ask for it) Treat their range like a trombone and you'll be fine.

-The vocal range of this piece is scary...Some would argue it is impossible, but I'm sure someone out there can sing it...

-It's hard for the trumpet to play up there at mf. It'll come out as at least a forte.

Other then all of that, it's a nice little piece. I was never a fan of singing, at least in English. (especially these lovey-dovey lyrics... :P )

The music was (kinda) reflecting the emotions of the singer, not the shy feeling. The first couplet was somewhat sad, the second one happier because of the girl, and the last ones about being angry that the shyness is blocking what he wants.

-As for the trombones range, it's tricky. The tenor trombone can play down to the E natural below the stave, then chromatically from the Bb below the stave down to the F. I explained this already a few posts ago to Jompa. My songs are just a first draft (as I look at it), so changes can be made.

-Is there a reason that you've written the violin II part lower than the violin I? It just seems odd...
I think you mean vice versa, violin I lower than violin II. But I have no real clue actually. I think I noticed at first, but was too lazy to change it, and it sort of stayed there.

-Your horn part is too high. I wouldn't write above a written E. (though some professionals can go higher, but I wouldn't ask for it) Treat their range like a trombone and you'll be fine.
Ah, I didn't know. Just lowering the octave doesn't really do the trick, at least for the first part, so I guess I should just move them to some other instruments. Thanks for letting me know, though.

-It's hard for the trumpet to play up there at mf. It'll come out as at least a forte.
I guess the outcome would be forte, then. I don't think it should give that much of a problem.

Also, I gave a somewhat older song "Don't" lyrics!

I know your piece so far only is a first draft, so you don't really have to care about this, it is just me giving more critique about the instrumentality: :P
Spoiler
Is there a reason that you've written the violin II part lower than the violin I? It just seems odd...
Well, it is a bit weird if they are playing an harmonized melody-sorta thing, but if they are playing parts that are different, then violin 1 should have the most important part, even if it is lower than the violin 2.
But in Bloop's piece, where this occurs; none of the violins actually hold a "super-important" role, though, so it is a bit hard to determine which of the two parts are more important. Also; in these places the gap between the violins are extremely big anyways (with that I mean that the violin 2 is so much higher than the violin 1 that anyone who would hear it would think the violin 2 is the violin 1).
I'm with Olimar here.

Change the instrument to piccolo horn or something ::)

And this is just unserious...
And Bloop, where are the saxes?  >:(

There are saxes in an orchestra?

Talking about orchestra, I've made a remix of Endlessly, a song by Muse. It fits my situation perfectly, so it deserved this :D (Also fun ending thing for my videos :3)

I'm still making/trying to make original compositions. I don't have enough inspiration for a whole song right now :(.
I've also reset the vote count of the poll, following my idea some posts back.

Sometimes, clicking the scrollbar and dragging it down is useful after all. But I think I'm going to "delete" the poll (just some empty space), since it isn't getting much attention, or attention enough to make the poll a useful place.

Well it is in C dominant phrygian, which is major - the Eb are only there because the chord on those beats are Dbmaj13(#11), and the ninth in Db is Eb.
But yeah, I have actually seen a sheet notate dominant phrygian like that before - the Wikipedia page mentions something about weird time signatures as well, so I guess it's ok :)

well this has been a while again

I may start this topic up again to keep up with all my newest compositions. I started making an conceptual album about all 12 zodiac signs. I've currently finished 5 of them; listen to them here (https://soundcloud.com/meldan100/sets/zodiac)!

Aside from the Zodiac sign songs, there are currently loads of other songs on my soundcloud. The most recent songs are on my sort-of conceptual EP-ish Unknown (https://soundcloud.com/meldan100/sets/unknown-1) and my sort-of conceptual album-ish Amare Semper (https://soundcloud.com/meldan100/sets/amare-semper).

Thanks for listening!

still working on zodiac and not keeping to my resolutions of keeping this topic updated

I'm not really that advanced in mixing/mastering/whatever those artists do with electronic music, so it's kinda like a first draft :p Great to hear you like it! :D
I'm currently working on some music things for school (writing game music) which I may upload some time, but that'll come later! After that, I'll continue working on the last songs of Zodiac.
