I'm a trumpet player, I've been playing since I was 10 and I want to know if anybody else here plays. I sit second chair in the middle school concert band.
i've been playing trumpet 2 years.. and i too sit 2nd chair in my middle school band.. although what's weird is last year i was last chair the whole year.... i always got 4th part... which really sucked.. :(
I'm first chair in my High School ;D and I plan on working to get first chair AGAIN next year in both Jazz and Symphonic!
I sit first chair for trumpet for concert band and jazz band. I am in 8th grade and I probably will win the award for outstanding achievement. (Only 1 per year!) So that is exciting. Also for next year in marching band he literaly told me to take first trumpet because he thought I would do better than most of the softmores that play trumpet. The songs are like f***ing dragonforce, it is insanity. Also, today I got done playing at every school at our district for jazz band, my lips feel like they are going to fall off. All trumpet players know what I mean. Luckily I don't have braces. =/

lucky... i have braces... it sucks really badly.. u mess up alot.. and it hurts to play trumpet when u get a new appliance on.. i still have em on for another year so it's going to stink. that's cool your 1st..
I would chalenge for first chair in the middle school band but I cant because the teacher wont let me! At state assessment we made strait distinguished for the middle school and highschool! ^^ The highschool music I get is always 3rd or 4th part though and I dont like it. I dont feel chalenged at all with my music. Its way to easy and I wish he would give me a better part. :(

My friend just found a solution, buy something called Floral Tape, it isn't actually tape, it is just sorta wax paper, it is tasteless, you put it on your braces by rolling it on them, and it sticks on eventually and will stay on all day, and the braces won't cut you, I have also heard of a mold that you put over your braces where you play and it covers them so you don't get cut, but it is more expensive.
I'm third chair of 27 trumpets, so I'm pretty good. I too recently toured my district with my jazz band. I've always been a good trumpet player, much better then the people sitting behind me. But I can't touch 2nd and 1st chair, they're incredible. Ever seen 1st part on Carmina Burana? That's killer! We have to play Star and Stripes over and over and over and over. I can never watch July Fourth Fireworks again!
I would be first chair if it werent for the fact that the teacher wont let me chalenge! But I'm second chair out of ten (yah, we dont have that many...)
I am first chair out of 13 but I don't think having 27 trumpets is good balance for the band... unless the other sections are bigger. We have a generally small band but there is a lot of competition of who is the best in the band. I would consider myself 2nd in the band total, here is a good list
1. **** ****, Clarinet Player that also plays alto/tenor/soprano sax
2. myself
3. ***** **********, baritone saxophone player
4. **** *******, trumpet player
Censored names because I don't know if they are comfortable with me announcing their names.
We have an over all nice balance of instruments for our band except for the saxes. We have:
4 flutes
8 clarinets
2 baritones
3 tubas
4 trombones
1 bass clarinet
1 bari sax
1 tenor sax
1 french horn
10 trumpets and
8 alto saxes?!
Yes, we have to many alto saxes... It really sounds 'interesting'
13 clarinets
3 bass clarinets
11 flutes
1 or 2 piccolos (depending on the song)
3 oboes
8 alto saxes
3 baritone saxes
12 trumpets
3 tubas
5 trombones
6 euphonium
3 bassoons
7 percussionists
Wow your guys bands sound big >__>
4-3 Flutes
1 Picolo(depends)
7-8 Clarinets
4 Saxes
1-2 Bari saxes
1 Tenor (who never plays) so we have no tenor
1 Bassoon
5 Trumpets (actually 4 who play. 3 who are good. the other 2 arn't good. 1 doesn't even BRING HIS TRUMPET!!!)
4 Trombones
1 Baritone (An anoying fat kid who sits by me >___> )
1 Bass
>__>, T.T
The last four trumpets just cant play so theres only six of us who can actualy play our music, one of our flutes absolutaly cant play, three of the clarinets absolutaly cant play, the last four alto saxes sound really airy like their playing through a pillow, and three of the trombones cant play all. Only two sections that are perfect, the tubas and the baritones. :-\ But we still sound good because everybody else plays louder than the others to drown out their bad sounds.
Our band has balance, mostly because half of the trumpets can hardly play. We have a huge band because it's both the 7th and 8th grades put together. This is my band
26 Flutes
3 oboes
21 Clarinets
5 Bass Clarinets
9 Altos
8 Tenors
6 French Horns
22 Trumpets (I had miscounted before)
1 Bari
2 Tubas
1 Bass
7 Trombones
1 piccolo (depends)
And a sucky percussion group
holy crap you guys have so many people in band :o in my school we have intermediate and advanced bands, but the orchestras outnumber both of them (49>24 int. 42>28 adv.)
intermediate (mostly 6th grade, but some 7th):
3 flutes
7 clarinets
3 alto saxes
4 trumpets
2 trombones
5 percussion
advanced (7th and 8th grade):
9 flutes
7 clarinets
1 bass clarinet
2 saxes
3 trumpets
1 trombone
5 percussion
my band is big we never get any work done... and that our director can't control all of them..
3 tubas
1 baritone
4 trombones
12 alto saxes
1 tenor sax
22 trumpets
17 clarinets
17 flutes
9 percussionist
1 base clarinet
1 oboe
1 basson
3 french horn
so yes... we have no balance and everyone is bad.. one reason why i'm not taking band next year.. but i'll take it in high school i guess.. i'll just have to work on the trumpet (by playing video game music! ;D)

i'm not gonna do band in high school, because they make you do marching band, which i really don't want to do. (and marching band is your fall sport, so, no.)
What sucks with meh band is we HAVE to do marching band & we HAVE to go to the football games for Pep band >___>
that's why there's jazz band =P. but atleast marching band is only for half a year... although i hate football so it's real boring for me to be at a football game. why can't we play for the tennis team or chess team?! lol

No. Just, No.

aww... why not? well what about basketball? some schools' bands play during basketball games.. although u don't march or anything..

because us americans (though not me personally) obsess over football.
Wow...at least your bands (for the most part) have all the instruments. (Except the mysterious English horn.)
My band has:
No piccolo
No oboe
No tuba
No bass clarinet
No baritone
No tuba
No French horn
We Do have:
6 flutes (one is amazing)
6 clarinets (my twin sister sits first)
4 alto saxes (my section of residence)
4 tenors (all loud, squeeky, and annoying)
1 bari (Pretty darn good if I say so.)
1 bassoon (Nice gal, can't hear her)
15 trumpets (uhg)
6 trombones (our strong point of all things)
5 percussionist (They're amazing)
I hated pep band...we did football and basketball...but we don't have a marching band.
I played my main instrument, the violin, in jazz band. (I'm such a homewrecker!)
In my high school orchestra I'm concert mistress and I'm off to college orchestra in the fall. (Violin IS a competetive sport...any string player breezing by this page will agree.)

Wow none?! >_> we have a baritone and he's just too snoby. (freaking prick)
So all of us have a dysfunctional band eh? all right! we can all now share sympothy with one another >__<,

where I live, there seem to be fewer and fewer people in band each year. my brother's band has only 1 person in it (himself), so next year, when he and the other 5th graders move to my middle school, he's gonna be the only band person and there are 23 violins :o pretty sad if you ask me

hey I play violin too :D and I totally agree. some guy in my class challenged me and two other people. despite our efforts, we all lost :'(
my school the orchestrra is getting so small that the school might try and combine intermediate with us (advanced)....

thats why i play cello
but nowadays i think i should have played Double BAss or mandolin
much less competion -_-
I play the trumpet and I'm in first chair in my band and I play 2nd in the High School Marching Band. I'm learning how to play the bass guitar.

I play mandolin...no competion...in my city I know all of 3 mandolin players.
My school's strings suck majorly. They all play off key. And yes, my band is huge. It's two grades combined. We played our concert this week. Apparently we are the best band in YEARS!
Meh, our band:
11 Trumpets (4 can't play to save their lives)
Like 9 or 10 Clarinets (all epic)
4 or 5 flutes, some suck
4 trombones and one has had me convinced that he can't play an instrument, he just sits with his trombone bell facing the ground making fart-like sounds. the other three are meh.
3 french horns... pretty good
1 tuba, he is epic
1 bari, probably the best band-ist
2 tenors, never hear them
2 altos, good
1 oboe, she just got her's back (it was broke)
3 base clarinets and I am pretty sure they don't play at all.
9 or 10 percussionists
no bassoon
no baritones
no piccolos

haha
its the exact opposite in my school
were getting so small that the counselors (against my teacher's opinion) are thinking about combining intermediate and advanced orchestras (that shoceked me b/c the intermediate orchestra is so much... different, probably b/c the advanced group top chairs are dominated by asians for, ex. all first violins are asian, our best viola is asian, and im the only asian cello :P, the best 2nd violins, who should be 1st, are asian, etc.)
thats IF we dont have any more enrollments in orchestra
nearly every music player is asian in my school. but then nearly everyone in the school is asian. :P

Bad joke. My bad...
:(
oh...ok. that makes sense. sorry for the outburst. :-[
It's fine. I should have been more clear...clearer...yeah.
Trumpets are awsome I think all of us hath done told how all our bands doth sucketh so I ask thee this...Does this hat make me look fly-eth?
Yes.
Quote from: Brawler4Ever on May 30, 2008, 06:53:07 PMYes.
XD Thank thee! ok but getting back on topic. I'm a successful trumpet player who can be very show offy if I wanted to. XD
yay, good for you!
ahem, my *coughadmirercough* is a trumpet player, too. I don't think he's a big show-off. although, the 8th graders might be...:P
All 8th graders are show offs.....-_____-;
Our band numbers. This is our Symphonic band while we have two bands combining for over 150 people.
1 piccolo (if needed)
6 flutes (this includes the pic player)
10 Clarinets
1 Alto Clarinet
4 Alto Sax
1 Tenor Sax
1 Baritone Sax
2 Oboes
3 Bassoons (Bassoons ftw...although he might drop it down to 2 next year)
9 Trumpets
4 Trombones
3 Baritones
3 Tubas
1 String Bass
and an awesome Percussion section
I guess we are average size..although we bulge in a couple of spots that others dont.
I sat 3rd bassoon behind two drum majors and two seniors...ouch... (Im a sophomore becoming a junior) But next year, Ima be first chair. no doubt in my mind.
And when I play alto sax (during marching season)...I deservingly sit last chair haha. I will always put myself in front of freshmen tho...although some may play better than me. So seating isn't organized.
Wow PH your bands numbers are wonder full! >___> I wish we had that many next year. and sadly I MIGHT BUT HOPEFULLY MIGHT NOT drop next year. >____> well I have this stupid splint thing in my mouth so I can align my jaw so my jaw joints (TMJ's) wont click when I talk or eat and I've played trumpet with that!
(In short I had an over bite and I played trumpet for 3 years with the over bite and now I have to align my jaw so I don't have an overbite and I can't play my trumpet for a WEEK and so far it sucks. not to mention it has incredibly weakend my jaw strength and so I have to for a week eat Scrambled eggs, bread with creamy peanut butter, mashed potatoes, bannanas and pudding. >_____> cause they are the only foods I like that are soft for me to eat with this stupid plastic thing in my mouth)

ah... i remember those days... i too have an overbite so i had to do that same thing... although sphagettios are soft too... u can just swallow em.... even mac and cheese if your feeling risky =P.
Our Band Numbers? epic, but somewhat unproportional
1 piccolo
10 flutes
12 clarinets
1 contra clairinet

1 Bari Sax
1 Bass Sax (she plays Bari if there's no Bass part)
1 oboe
1 basson
6 trumpet
3 trombone
2 Tuba
3 baritone
2 string bass
EPIC WIN! I wish we had that many flutes and tuba and bari (yes both) and yeah then MEH band would be just as epic... and of course if they feel like it >.>

3 bass clarinets
1 alto sax
1 tenor sax
9 trumpets
8 trombones (which I am a part of)
3 baritones

Percussion-9
Clarinet-Not even going there, too many to count
Trombone-10
French Horn/Baritone/Mellowphone- 10

Piano (yes, we incorporate this a lot)- 4 (me)
I don't think anyone can compare to my massive band from before. But they kicked out everyone who failed their final for the Student Conductor's Concert. YAY. :D
