I didn't see this... :(

did you guys hear about the mistake BBC america made? Apparently they accidentally released DVD copies of the second half of the season, so people have gotten their hands on the finale before it even aired on TV! What a thing to tell your kids when they get into the show, huh?

I'm glad we brought this back. It's about to get real full...even though the season is just about over...

50th ANNIVERSARY STARRING DAVID TENNANT AND LIKE A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER WHO-Y THINGS!!!

Yeah, Tennant is making a comeback as the "human Doctor" from the episode "The Journey's End"(which btw was one of the best episodes in in the history), alongside Billie Piper(Rose Tyler).

I am excite.

I can't think of any other possible way to have him back with Rose, since it would require a lot of fixed timepoints.

Yeah, Tennant is most definitely going to play the human Doctor. Too much wibbly-wobbly timey-whimey stuff would be changed if it would go differently.

Well Steve Moffat himself said most of the rumors about the 50th Anniversary are untrue.

Plus, it was stated last year that Matt Smith is staying on board through Season 8, so either way, you're wrong.

ANY THOUGHTS ON MR. JOHN HURT?
Spoiler
Since The Doctor already knew who he was,my guess is that it's someone from his past and not the 12th.And considering his hairstyle is somewhat similar to the 10th's, my bets are on older human doctor. Since the human doctor did cause a mass genocide, which the regular doctor wasn't too fond of. Unless, of course, it has been announced who he is. But I'm too lazy to look it up.

this would be stupid. Why not just hire Paul McGann? He's been very involved in a lot of Doctor who audios, etc off of television, and would be more than willing to play an older version of himself. And he can't be a younger first doctor, because he himself is actually 15 years older than William hartnell when he portrayed the doctor anyway!

Instead, there's this theory, which is most plausible:
Spoiler
The most common theory I e heard, which is more in depth than what SFK said, is that John Hurt is playing the REAL 9th doctor (making all other doctors +1), the one who took place at the Time War. This is backed by the fact that the Doctor said he was not "the Doctor", he didn't work under the name "the Doctor," when in "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS" Clara reads the doctors name out of the book of the time war, when it gives his real name and not "the Doctor." Why would that be? If you've seen older episodes before the reboot of the doctor on Gallifrey, the other timelords call him the doctor. Why then, would his name be recorded as his real name in the history of the time war?
[close]

Think about it.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/prince-charles/10157321/Doctor-Whos-new-adversary-the-Prince-of-Wales.html

QuoteCostume designer Howard Burden, who showed the royal couple a selection of costumes from the show, disclosed that the anniversary episode will feature John Hurt, who will play a "dark Doctor" seen briefly at the end of the last series.

He said: "There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn't see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor."

:O
I hope this won't mean Matt Smith is technically the Twelfth Doctor, since the series would come to an end in the next few seasons or something.
Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: SuperFireKirby on July 18, 2013, 10:15:52 AM
Yes, because if it's the twelfth doctor, Moffat won't be able to write his way around it to keep the series going. I mean, regeneration was just a quick write up to keep the series going after William Hartnell had to leave because of his bad health. The best part about the Doctor Who universe(much like our own) is that no mater how set in stone something may seem, it can always be changed.

True I've only watched the first two episodes, but if I started here I probably would've added the series to my shows-to-watch-but-probably-will-never-watch list

Jack certainly is flirtatious, as is apparent in The Empty Child, but Rose has already committed herself to someone (Mickey) and yet continues to present herself as available to men she meets on her travels. From what I can tell, Jack has no such relationship.

If I were Mickey, I'd be pissed.

So I finally caught up with everyone else. Is it normal to feel like my life has no purpose now?

Also, I saw you guys were talking about how the writers could work around the doctor's limited regeneration. I read somewhere that RTD (I think it was him, if not one of the other writers) said something about the whole "regeneration cap" as a rule set by the timelords. They wanted to preserve energy or something. Anyways, now that they're gone, it doesn't really mater and the doctor can regenerate as many times as he wants.

I'm not sure how that makes sense, but that's just what RTD said.

My new favorite lines:

Season 2 Finale
Dalek: IDENTIFY YOURSELF!

Cyberman: You will identify first.

STATE YOUR IDENTITY!

You will identify first.

IDENTIFY!

That is illogical. You will modify.

DALEKS DO NOT TAKE ORDERS!

You have identified as Dalek.

OUTLINE RESEMBLES THE INFERIOR SPECIES KNOWN AS CYBERMEN!

Out species are similar but your design is inelegant.

DALEKS HAVE NO CONCEPT OF ELEGANCE!

This is obvious.

Later...

YOU ARE ONLY SUPERIOR IN ONE RESPECT!

What is that?

YOU ARE BETTER AT DYING!

lol I love them so much. XD

Also, the 2 second scene with Capaldi already make me think he's gonna be an awesome Doctor. That stare was epic.

Post by: Bubbles on November 24, 2013, 10:40:45 AM
It was really good, but definitely not my favorite. I feel like I missed a lot though since I started with 9 (though I knew Tom Baker a little bit)

A few questions though (spoiler tags just in case?)
Spoiler
There were 13 Doctors with their TARDISes when that whole scene with Gallifrey happened. Since the 13th one technically hasn't happened in the show's timeline yet, they obviously went into the show's future a bit. But if Capaldi came before Smith regenerated, does that mean he's the last Doctor (or his future regenerations would have come as well)?. Or did they only need 13 Doctors and the regeneration after Capaldi just felt he didn't need to come?

Also, I thought that Gallifrey was trapped in the painting like the Zygons were, and all they had to do was "unfreeze" the painting to bring it back. But the Doctor said he has to go find Gallifrey now, so I'm assuming that the portrait was just that and not the actual planet?

Quote from: Bubbles on November 24, 2013, 10:40:45 AMIt was really good, but definitely not my favorite.

Spoiler
Time Lords have 13 uses of regeneration, meaning Capaldi might be the last one.

They froze Gallifrey in a one moment, in a pocket universe. Consider it as a bubble.

Spoiler
I knew about the regeneration thing (though I thought it was 12 regenerations, 13 Doctors), but I'm pretty sure like SFK said they're going to work around that. My guess is with Amy remembering the Doctor and bringing him back that he started with a clean slate there (making Capaldi the first regeneration, second Doctor)

And yeah pocket universes, I know those too (from Hide). I just assumed that the pocket universe was the painting.

Ok another thing

My friend insisted that the War Doctor regenerated into Eccleston, but he's the Ninth doctor. I thought he would have regenerated into Hartnell?

I should probably watch the classic episodes so I actually know who these people are
Title: Re: Doctor Who

By War Doctor, do you mean the Eight Doctor who starred in a movie, who is also known as the most Fabulous Doctor (he even beats the 17th!!!).

And by Hartnell, do you mean the First Doctor???
Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: SuperFireKirby on November 26, 2013, 12:45:31 AM
^Yes, William Hartnell is the first Doctor.

And I believe she is referring to the John Hurt, who is known as the Warrior Doctor. But no, he regenerates into Eccleston. Otherwise, it would be put into an endless loop of regeneration going from Hartnell all the way through Hurt and back to Hartnell.

But more importantly, Tom Baker's presence was extremely welcome, but does anyone have any theories on why the heck he's an art curator?

The Doctor goes to visit his other personalities, but as we got the explanation, due to mixed timestreams, they won't remember their visits.

Woah woah wait a second. When does the Time War happen in the Doctors lifetime? I thought it was placed before the story started, with the story beginning with Hartnell right after he "destroyed" Gallifrey

And if the War doctor regenerates into Eccleston, doesnt that bump every Doctor up a number? (Tennant is 11, Smith is 12, etc)
Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: SuperFireKirby on November 26, 2013, 12:10:02 PM
The Time War took place between McGann and Eccleston, before the start of the reboot. Not before the start of the original series.

And actually Smith is technically the 13th regeneration.

First you have Hartnell thru McGann(1-8), then John Hurt or the Warrior Doctor(9), Eccleston(10), then Tennant uses two regenerations, one when he regenerates from Eccleston and one in Journey's End(11 & 12), and then there's Matt Smith(13).

Post by: Waddle Bro on November 26, 2013, 01:14:44 PM
SFK, I don't think the Journey's End Doctor used up that much of regeneration energy. Plus they referenced in the 50th "all thirteen", meaning Capaldi was the thirteenth.

Also, I'm hoping to see the return of the Valeyard.

Capaldi is the 13th Doctor, but he's going to technically be the 14th regeneration.

I'm just going to call Hurt the 8.5th Doctor so it totally doesn't mess me up.

Besides, TENnant has to be the 10th Doctor, and the Eleventh Hour doesn't make sense without Matt Smith being the 11th Doctor.

We're just going to refer to the War Doctor as such... unless we find out the doctor's real name... because I think that is the name he went by.

Also, I got to hear stories from my uncle when he started watching Dr Who when he was 4... he grew up in the UK and Tom Baker was his first doctor.

I couldn't watch it when it actually aired, but now I'm all caught up!

Questions again
do we still use spoiler tags or was that just because i started the series??
One of the main points was the truth field that was put over the whole town. At one point after the Doctor had aged, that boy ran in (i cant remember his name but the doctor got it wrong) and the Doctor told him that he had a plan. But once he left, he told Clara that he didn't have a plan. I was waiting for it to be resolved later in the episode, even with a simple "oh hes been exposed to it for so long it doesnt work anymore" but it never happened

Also I thought Tasha was a character from the earlier seasons by the way they introduced her but apparently not

That's a great catch, Bubbles!  It did contradict what he says later (telling the young man that he has a plan and then telling Clara that he doesn't have one).  I think it was a small slipup, but that's the type of thing that happens all the time in literature (and there are probably a lot bigger shenanigans in Doctor Who anyway!!!).  It's probably just one of the minor things that we need to overlook, I suppose!

My opinion seems unpopular from the few comments so far, but I actually like it.  He looks becoming, as if he were a magician or musician.  Perhaps not how the Doctor is normally depicted, but I'm glad he's going with a slightly more radical look, so to speak.

Forgot to post here earlier!

I dunno, the first episode had more of a try-hard feel to me and I dislike how they had to use Smith as a plot device at the end. It didn't strike me as epic as let's say The Eleventh Hour, but it was awesome if you can get past the overacting at the start. The episode showed me that Capaldi will perform great, but it takes me time to adapt. But Vastra is one of my favourite characters and I enjoyed seeing her and Jenny a lot!

And that gay sex reference doe.
Title: Re: Doctor Who
Post by: SuperFireKirby on August 24, 2014, 05:24:53 PM
Of the three post-regeneration episodes of Doctor Who in the new series, this was my least favorite. Not to say it was bad, but Capaldi remained in that oblivious madman state long past the point of enjoyability. And a lot of the episode did feel a bit forced. But once he got in his element, he was pretty darn good and I expect great things from him. Also, I love Vastra and Jenny's relationship and how damn cheeky they are.

And people apparently got mad over the kissing scene, which I find both odd and silly. I mean, after the multitudes of gay/lesbian/other characters in Doctor Who(I think Jack Harkness counts for, like, 1000 at least) you think people would be used to it by now.

Post by: Bubbles on August 26, 2014, 06:12:31 PM
I had almost no idea of anything that was going on until a visual plot point happened. I'm not used to fast british talking anymore lol

And idk I'm kinda with beginning-of-episode Clara in that the Doctor is too different. I'm pretty sure its been said before that even though he keeps his memories and is still the Doctor, his attitude and other nonphysical attributes change. I know Clara won't, but you can't really blame a companion for leaving after a regeneration.

Yeah, I feel that the 12th isn't as good. He seems to genuinely care less about people's lives than any previous Doctor. Whereas the 9th, 10th, and 11th spent a good deal of time desperately trying to save everybody(though they almost always failed to do so) the 12th is far more ambivalent to whether people live or die.

It's funny how not even BBC staff can tell is it Series 1 or 8. Moffat insists on calling it 1, because of the whole new 'regeneration cycle' shit(the whole Gallifrey sending regen energy was a cheap plot device to continue the series for let's say the next 15 years imo).

Wrong.

The video is referring to the first series of Doctor Who Extra, the behind-the-scenes show, not the revived series itself. I've never heard Moffat calling this a new series 1.

Also, getting a new cycle of regenerations was not a "cheap plot device" in order to continue the show- it's a critical part of the series' lore. How else would the Doctor have survived? and 15 years? That's not likely at all. We made it a whole 50 with just 11 doctors (the war and metacrisis were only featured in one episode each), who's to say we won't last another 50 years?

Gallifrey just sent 13 regenerations worth of regeneration energy through the crack after an emotional speech by Clara in it(Not to mention Gallifrey was supposed to be stuck in a single moment in time), River gave The Doctor all of her regen energy as well, but that didn't stack. I know you're a massive fanboy and all, but using Gallifrey as a plot device like that was sloppy and rushed writing to me, I was expecting something much more epic that would mean the series would continue for decades than just one mention from Matt Smith of "a whole new regeneration cycle" which was conflicting with River giving Doctor her energy and that didn't stack like that.
I just threw the number 15 not thinking about it that much, considering how they got through five regenerations in just eight years in the renewed series. This regen cycle is most definitely not going to last 50 years, because that'd mean each Doctor would be supposed to last almost four years before the next one. With the current pace of the renewed series, it won't even reach 25 years before this cycle is completed.

And the newest episode showed us all why child actors are godawful.

Yo what a satisfying episode

Spoiler
The fact that the Cyberman army was for The Doctor the entire time was bloody brilliant scriptwriting. The conclusion for the actual destruction of the Cybermen was sloppy writing on the other hand imo. Really disappointment how lame the separation of The Doctor and Clara was compared to for example Rose/Donna/Amy, but I'm not sure does she return for the Christmas special.

All in all, Season 8 wasn't able to live to my expectations, a lot of the episodes felt like rushed to meet the deadline. It wasn't my most disliked season, but it wasn't in the top either. I'd still prefer seasons 4-7 over this one any day.
