In the expressions pop up box, go click on Tempo Markings on the list on the left. Then click the create tempo marking button that has appeared somewhere on the tight side. Then it's pretty self explanatory.
Insert Note, lets you insert a note, the Tempo tab at the top lets you control playback (just tick the one that says to match the text or something like that).
If two successive songs have the same tempo, you don't need to rewrite the tempo for the second song but for every song that has a different tempo to the previous one, then yes it does need an individual tempo marking.

This is just a suggestion: It would be great (at least for me) if there would be a deadline, that way I know when the update will take place.
I'd like there to be a weekly deadline but for that, I think there needs to be a steady stream of good arrangements. Also, I have end of school exams in 2 weeks so I can't necessarily promise that I will be able to keep to a deadline for the moment.

When we get some submissions :P Ideally, I'd like each update to have at least 15 songs (20 would be preferable) but if I end up waiting to long, then I guess it doesn't really matter.
Another question: I have downloaded finale 2011. Is that a problem? Since most of the members haven't updated their finale readers yet.
I just downloaded Finale Reader 2011 yesterday, so I won't have a problem, but we could have someone with an earlier version test it for you, I guess.

I can't think why there'd be a problem. Commander6 has already submitted a couple of sheets in Finale 2011.

As for deadlines, not for the moment. I'm busy with exams and revision up until the 17th of November so I can't guarantee when I'll have time to look through submisisons or to do the update. But I seem to be averaging about 10 or so days between updates. After exams, I'll set a proper deadline.
Nevermind the previous post, we now have a deadline system.
The Deadline For Submissions Is 10 Days After The Topic Is Made.
(That gives 3 updates a month which seem pretty good to me)

The version I currently use is finale (full) 2009. And when I try to create a tempo marking I cannot find the "insert note" button... What shall I do?
Really? There's no drop down menu or anything? Hmm, that's weird, there's a button in Printmusic '09. I'd suggest asking Brassman388 seeing as he uses Finale 2009.
Alright! I have recently used the 2011 version, but it was just a free trial version. There was this insert note button.
I know how-- go to insert text, and assign the text to a measure. If you put the font as "Maestro" it's all notes and you can press q for a quarter note, etc. After the note, change the font back to Times new roman and you can type = whatever.
I use the expressions tool and edit the "adagio quarter note = 40" to whatever I need.
Finale Notepad 2011 doesn't let me do that. Dx

Also, you don't need to provide PDFs for Submissions. I'll just make them myself.
I'm away for a week, so I can't check submissions. Although I believe I'll still have access to the internet, I won't have access to Finale. Because of this, the next update may be pushed back a few days but I'll work that out next week. I still put up a submission topic anyway.
Alrighty, I'll try to look through as many submissions I can in the short time I've got now, but to be honest, I really can't bothered. This update will most likely end up being done after Christmas.

There are two versions of Magma Flows from Kirby Air Ride and Spiral Mountain from B-K so I think the answer would be yes.
One of your songs are like that too, aren't they Deku? "Dark World" from LoZ: ALTTP. Love those two arrangements!

they're not going to be in the right key because it's you're playing a transposing instrument and the sheet music is for piano which isn't. if you want, you could make a thread in the music board and post songs that you'd like a transposition of and i'm sure most of the arrangers will be glad to help.

1) create a dropbox account
2) install the program
3) Locate the dropbox folder that it creates
4) copy/cut the MUS into the publilc folder in dropbox

Exporting a MIDI is easy. When you go to "Save As", instead of saving as an ".mus", click ".mid".
Making PDF is a bit trickier. What you're going to need to do is download a PDF creator such as "PrimoPDF" (that's what I use [it's free]). Once installed, in Finale, go to Print and set up the printer as the PDF creator you downloaded, then print. It should send the Finale score to the PDF creator and make a PDF of the score.

When I submit something, how should I structure the post?
^Are you talking about how to make your arrangement thread?
First, you could have a short introduction. A welcome message to the thread is always nice. Call the thread "(username)'s arrangements" or something similar.
As long as you keep it tidy, it doesn't matter much how you format the thread. You can sort your sheets in whatever way you like, either by date uploaded, by game, alphabetically, etc. Just be consistant with the format.
A generally recommended trick is to use [ url ] tags to shorten links to the site you've uploaded your sheets to. Please don't use any uploading site that has a "waiting time" before downloads, though. MediaFire or yet better, Dropbox, work wonderfully.
You can provide a .mus, a .pdf and a .mid-file for each arrangement. Only the .mus is required to have in your thread, the other two are required as well when submitting sheets for upload.
As for posts in the uploading thread, just names, links (MUS, MID and PDF) are required. Just keep it tidy, the uploaders are (generally) smart enough to figure it out.

I hate to do this. I really do. I'm usually a proponent of patience. However, we're fast approaching 2 months on this update. Is there any way to get, like, a projected date even if it's really general? Otherwise the update ends up just sitting here for a long time. Nakah has offered to do the actual uploading part if that means anything... Idk. I know you guys are busy. Just hoping to hear what the plan is :-X

Why on earth do they take so long? Its been well over two months, and it looks like less than half the songs in this topic (http://www.ninsheetm.us/smf/index.php?topic=4509.0) have comments, and even fewer have approval.

Yeah, I saw. There was a lot of discussion on who a new updater should be, or how new updates should be handled. I agree with those ideas, but the only way they'll get implemented (or even taken seriously) is if we directly address the people in charge of submissions. Hence my previous post here. If I still don't get a response in the next day or three, I'll PM them. Or email them, if possible.

Is it too late to submit now? I think it's sort of unfair for the trashed updates.

Winter and Olimar have looked at mine. I would imagine something similar will happen before the update tomorrow.
I put mine up earlier today, just in case they did get to them. You could post yours, they might see it. Worst case scenario, they don't and you just submit it again for the next update.
Just so you know, I might not get time to look at the last 3 posts before this update goes up. Maybe if I get time tonight, but otherwise, just resubmit them on Monday on I'll definitely look at them properly for the next update.

Just in time, too. Am I the only one who couldn't figure out for the life of me what all these ZIPs and MIDs were when people told you you had to put them in that format?
What all file types need to be uploaded for a submission, and how do I upload them?
Mus, Midi, PDF, Dropbox. Read the submissions thread.
For the submissions to the site, you can look on the individual submissions thread for each week, but basically you need a MUS file (Finale file), a MIDI, and a PDF. You put those all together in a Zip file or whatever the specific thread requires. For the site submissions you must use dropbox as of now. For your own submissions thread you can basically use any program, but its best to have those 3 types of files with dropbox if you ever want to get them on the site.
This all sounds really confusing but if you have any specific questions I can answer those

Would it be possible for me to get the MIDI file online and have someone else get it onto .mus and .pdf? I'm not a huge fan of Finale (I do have it and have tried it), but I have a program called Musescore, which can save as .mid and (unreliably) .pdf. It would be a huge help to me if this were possible, but, if not, I can use Finale.
If you can use finale, please do so. If someone else were to make the MUS and PDF even though you have all the resources yourself, it wouldn't be fair to that person.
Sorry about last weeks update, I had rehearsals and a concert for 4 nights of the week so that cut down my time to check and fix things properly. I'm more free this week, so please re-post/re-submit ;)
I do have a question, Deku. Are you going to be running the updates every week? Cuz I feel really bad for you. Don't we have two new team members who could help?

I think that the Updaters would have an easier job if they:
1. Took turns handling the updates every week.
2. Set up a schedule and all worked together efficiently.

I think it's about time the Duets section of our Guidelines (http://www.ninsheetm.us/smf/index.php?topic=481.0) get updated for clarification. I haven't seen enough published sheet music to know the exact proper formatting but here's my best guess based on the few duet music I've seen and what we have on the site.
- What we are currently labeling as Duets has "(Duet)" appended. e.g. [Console] Game - "Song (Duet)" - Arranger(s)
- The Grand Staff names should be "Primo" and "Secondo" with "I" and "II" in the abbreviations, respectively.
- Generally, duets will have Primo use two Treble Clef staves and Secondo will use two Bass Clef staves. These can deviate based on the song.
- Two Pianos arrangements have "(Two Pianos)" appended. e.g. [Console] Game - "Song (Two Pianos)" - Arranger(s)
- The Grand Staff names should be "Piano 1" and "Piano 2" with "Pno. 1" and "Pno. 2" in the abbreviations, respectively.
- Generally, both parts will use the same Grand Staff as a solo arrangement but can deviate based on the song.
- The type of duet is not put in the song title on the sheet. Amber Valley > Amber Valley (Duet)
- Scores should be landscape as opposed to portrait to reduce pages, plus it makes better use of the paper. Parts will remain in
portrait as they would with solo arrangements. - I propose that we change (Duet) to (Four Hands).

"Duet" always meant to me by default, "one piano".

I agree with most of what you said, but I think that landscape shouldn't be forced--rather it should be a suggestion. The last part is the thing I don't agree with. This means that if someone has an arrangement that a lot of people like, but a solo piece hasn't come out for, what, 4 years, then it would be just inconvenient to postpone the update of the duet. I agree to some extent that we need to make our sheets formal, but we don't have updaters to look at formality, we have them so they can review our arrangement. :P
One Piano Duet: Piano Four Hands - Title (Four hands)
Two Piano Duet: Piano Duo - Title (Piano Duo)
If you are going to be publishing duets in any form, you must indicate how the duet is arranged. This can be extrapolated for larger combinations of instruments/players. I agreethat there needs to be a solo version of all duets on the site, because that is the primary goal of this site; to produce sheet music that anybody can print out a play. They shouldn't have to need somebody else in order to play their favorite piece of VG music.
However, things have changed in NSM. Like how there aren't always Nintendo Sheets up on site. Jamaha says this in the main page: "Of course, we're called NinSheetMusic, so when we founded this site we were only focussed at Nintendo sheet music. These days, however, NSM is just the name and we don't really pay much attention to its origin anymore. So in short: yes, we do accept music other than Nintendo systems."
Things have to change, advance. Like if there weren't advancements in human history, we would still be living in caves.
I agree that there needs to be solo, but that shouldn't restrict the uploads of duets.

That has nothing to do what we are talking about. Yes we accept non-Nintendo music now, how does this relate to organizing how duets are labeled? The fact that we started accepting duets was a huge step, now that they are getting some attention, we want to try and keep them organized. Most enthusiasts come because they want to be able to play a piece;

solo. Duets are a nice option, but they shouldn't be the first and only option.

I dunno, I think it's common sense: it's not like people even think about the goals of NSM, they just think of it as a video game music sheet site like any other site. They want sheet music, not extra-special stuff. I am extremely picky about quality, but at this rate we're not going to have that many updates.
Actually it's quite simple: If you have a duet you want on the site, arrange a solo version to submit along side it; if not you, then ask a friend to do it for you.

But as far as I can see, there weren't really any complaints about the duet updates. We should just keep the regular system.

There is a "text" button at the top if Finale that can bold or italicize text or change size. Other than that it seems like everything is pretty self-explanatory. What are you struggling with?

Just wondering, do people prefer it if I fix up things for them or would you rather I left it up to you? I'm talking about smaller things like enharmonic spellings, key signatures, time signatures, minor transcription errors, formatting etc
Even if it is slower, I tend to prefer to tell people how to fix it and so they might learn and some people don't like their arrangements being edited.
I actually prefer your fixing it because 1) it's faster and 2) I know it will be most ideally changed to the standards you're looking for.
My only request is that you tell me what you do fix, so I can compare the two and actually learn from it.

I think the idea is that if it's not formatted properly, you can click on the formatting guidelines link on the first post and compare the two. Or else it would make having formatting guidelines redundant.

You can fix musical errors and note inaccuracies, but don't be messing with my formatting.
People really should be using a template, whether mine or their own, instead of doing formatting on a sheet-by-sheet basis.

It takes a while to get used to them, but the format is one of the best and most organized, yet accessible, I've seen.

Stuff like: should this be a sixteenth note or eighth note, or what tempo should I use, or what the hell is the key signature of this, or put a crescendo/diminuendo, etc.
So, I would just like to clarify: will there be anyone who would clean up the music sheet I would make (if ever I get to make one and hopefully will)? Meaning, I'll go figure out the notes in a piece, and this certain person will make the "write-up" of the piece for me (do all the formal music sheet stuff). :)
TL;DR - Will someone make an actual music sheet for me and for the benefit of everyone else, if I get to figure out the notes?

So you want somebody to write the actual sheet if you figure out the pitches?
Do me a favor: Try transcribing an actual sheet first. Don't just come here asking us to do all of the work for you, try it first. If you need help or get stuck, then come ask us for help. We'll be glad to help you along if you get struck with an arrangement.
You appear to have some basic understanding of pitch and rhythm, so just try to do it first.
Finale Notepad 2012 is a free, lite notation program; the Finale line of products are what we use here. We have resources here to help you along, so please use them.

First of all, welcome to the forums! :D And don't worry. Most of our newcomers have no idea about the nitty gritty theory side of things.
However, from what I can gather, are you having problems with rhythms? E.g the length of the notes and percussive stuff. Because that's like, have the basics of arranging. Do you do musical classes? Private or in school? Or have done?
In terms of tempo, use this (http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm) to tap along with the song's main beats. It will tell you the average tempo.
Key Signature is kinda difficult to explain. Basically, try counting along with the song using the main beats. It should all fit together evenly using the same number, usually. Mostly it's 4/4, but some times you get crazy ones -_-"
I wouldn't worry about dynamics just yet. Once you have the song completely arranged, or a section, then worry about dynamics.

Post your song in a new Arrangement thread under your name. This will become your base for all your arrangements. I will have a look at it and see if I can help you at all. By the way, what song do you think will be your first arrangement?

Hmmm. Yeah, it's one of the problems, but not a major one. I have even more problems on figuring out the accompanying bass notes, since I find it easier to play just the lead notes (right hand). I do, with myself. Haha. ;D Haven't gone to music classes, except for the ones that are school-sanctioned (those that are part of their curriculum). But how I wish I could actually attend to music classes. The internet and books are my best friends for learning music stuff. Oh, and also my peers from school. :)

Oh, I see. Yes the process of putting the notes in takes time. A lot actually. But it's worth it is you can create a wonderful masterpiece! :D
Also in my previous post I confused Key signature with Time Signature. Whoops. So basically if you can't find a Key signature, just write it out and then look through and if there are prominent accidentals through it, change the Key accordingly. E.g if there's an F# in every bar, add it in. It's confusing at first, but if you know your scales and Key signatures, it's a breeze.
Basically it all comes down to practice. The more you arrange, the better you will become. We all start out bad (Well, most of us), but over time we improve. We learn easier ways to do things, etc. etc.

There's a submission topic, stuck in this board. It should be under the title 'Fortnightly Update #1' or some thing. Just post your arrangements there, after following the correct guidelines of course ;) and your arrangement will be picked and plucked (By you of course) into NSM material. Then it will be posted on the site with all the other sheets.
All of the current ones are the most accurate and fantastic arrangements we can offer, ever since we introduced the new critiquing system. However, there are still a few, older, more utterly horrific arrangements on the site we haven't found yet.
So, since we're using the same Submission topic for the next update, can those who got their arrangements accepted post new ones? Or would that be too much work for the updaters?
I just finished arranging bowsers star reactor smg mode, but it turns out there was a same one on the super Mario 64 file. Both (super Mario 64 version and mine) sound similar, but mine sounds a little bit more to the smg or Mario and sonic at the Vancouver Olympics. Can I post it???
Technically, they are different songs. Because there are people who will hear that song for the first time while playing SMG, I would say you should be able to.
Yep, it's just like how HeartGold and SoulSilver arrangements differ greatly from the arrangements in Gold and Silver.

Changed both of my submissions for the next update.
Would someone mind giving an update? What's going on? There's this thing and then there's the update and the update needs to wait cause the thing is gonna be cool and the thing is almost done but it needs bug-testing.
Just feel like we're in the dark right now, and it's been 3 weeks since anyone's submission post has been edited by a mod. Unless the thing is going to help out updaters in a big way, I don't know why it would have to set submissions on hold for so long.

You know, this thing sounds like it's been planned out for a while now.
Planned? Not really, I couldn't plan a thing if my life depended on it :P I just started it on a whim about a month and a half ago....
"It" is a forum-integration submission system. I thought I'd try and finish it in my summer holidays so I have more of a chance of keeping up with things through the year, when things get busier. It's got a pretty form for arrangers to submit and edit their submissions, so it *should* be more organised than this current mess we're in now. Accepting is one-click, after adequate checking of course. And, in keeping with the theme, updating is also one click. Yay, automation :) It probably shouldn't have taken that long, but I'm not on the computer all that much and I haven't done any programming since high school. Anyway, learning curves are good :D
Jamaha has it now, so bug him to add finishing touches...
I don't understand why there's no sheet checking if I'm not around though. I believe there are 7 others who can check sheets apart from me. I know a few of them are inactive, but there are at least 3 who are active. I never said submissions are on hold. It's just me that was doing this.
Having looked at the current thread, I have no idea what's going on. I suppose I'll just remove the ones that have been accepted and keep going as before. It might not be till Thursday though. I think I'm busy tomorrow night, and I have rehearsals on Tuesday and Wednesday (actually, those are for pretty much the whole year).

An archive is a database where you store things. People use the PDF's so they can print them out of view them in a browser. They use the midi's to upload them to other programs to do things with. I personally use the MUS's so that I can watch the sheet as I hear it being played. It also allows me to make quick and easy changes to the sheet if something was incorrect on the site. and I would never have to go looking for the MUS file to fix it, because it's in our archive. If it wasn't there, and we credited the wrong composer, it's have to be re-written, or uploaded through midi again. It just helps to have all the files that an updater, arranger, member, or fan could ever need. Just cause you don't need one file does not mean it's not extremely useful, of in this case, necessary.

Your arrangement project folder still needs to follow the same rules as the others.

Oh I see; I forgot about the users using them as well. I just thought they slowed down, in a way, the number of sheets that are published on the site because other sheet sites usually don't require MUS files. Thanks for the info.

What do you need to do to be a "Veteran arranger"? I'm in NSM for 5 years and I arrange a bunch of musics, am I a veteran?... :P
All of that will be determined if we ever implement the new upload system.
However, the Veteran's group will have some very, very strict criteria every arranger will be held to. You can't just be one because you've been here for many years.

While I'm not the one actually making the call here, I'd expect it to be something like having the ability to constantly produce quality sheets. So if the updaters are going through your submissions and don't find any significant errors after a while, I assume that would qualify for a veteran status.

I think those are already given. Neither Olimar nor Winter will deliberately let a sheet through that lacks one of the first four rules, and therefore they're mandatory for newbies
and veterans. I'd say only the last one holds any water with regard to special criteria.
Ultimately I say that we leave it to the moderator's discretion. They're perfectly capable of doing the same job, but without putting "unalienable guidelines" in.
Long story short, I think the purpose of such guidelines is obsolete, and therefore there is no point in making any.

Currently trying to figure out how the Veteran arranger will fit into the new updating system, I was thinking we may permit those users to have more open sheet submissions at a time or something. We'll see. To become a Veteran Arranger, btw, just submit sheets like normal, when an updater decides that the quality of your sheets meets our standards, formatting, accuracy, etc... When it gets to the point where the Updater has little to say about an arrangement, ot only has to work with it for a short time, you're likely to be promoted to Veteran Arranger. ^^

Hoping to revive this discussion (I know it happened at some point but I couldn't find it)...
Just had a friend ask me why we didn't have the "Woods of Mystery" theme on Ninsheet. As most of you know, this is the same song as "Lost Woods." He's only ever played Majora's Mask, not OoT, so he actually thought that the Lost Woods theme originated with MM.
This sort of thing likely happens a lot. I really think it would be helpful to be able to go to any game and find the song you're looking for, even if if the only difference between it and another is the title.
Maybe we could give it a sort of "jump to" function instead of the PDF, MUS, and MIDI links?
Or make it look like theres a normal sheet, but when you click the link it brings you to the other version? Maybe even a list somewhere of the repeated songs and which you should look for

Idk, unless we're worried about them taking up space on the site or something it seems like it would make sense to just make a copy of everything, change the titles on the top of the sheets, and reupload them under the other game. They're technically their own song in both.

I agree with this problem though. I actually remember bringing it up myself in the past..
But I think the best thing to do would be -as Spit said- to just repost it as if it was a different song. It may seem rather redundant, but it really doesn't happen too much (outside the kirby franchise at least) and it would help clear a lot up. I was one of those people who couldn't find songs because I didn't know where they originated. In fact, if anyone's seen my old arrangement of "Achievement!" under Ocarina of Time on the main site (I have no idea why it's still up there; I requested it be taken down), that's a direct result of this issue. I knew next to nothing at the time of the earlier Zelda games and the music/sfx therein.
That sounds like a good idea. Can someone post a list here of necessary duplicates and I'll do the files and formatting etc

Cmon maestro, we all know that taking video game music and actually doing something creative with it takes no talent. Transcribing the few parts that will fit into a piano arrangement and leaving them virtually unchanged, now THAT takes some musical ingenuity.

If anybody has any idea how to make an accelerando work properly with the smart shape stuff, please tell me. I've used their help and fiddled with it, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what I do to it.

Are you guys OK with having more than two staves in some parts of the sheet music to help remove clutter? I can't think of any other way to clear up the overlapping voices.
Hard to be sure without seeing your arrangement, but I'm pretty sure you have more pertinent issues than visual clutter, haha. I would strongly advise against writing in any way a pianist would be unaccustomed to reading, and I don't know too many used to reading more than two staves at once :P
Check if it's playable (without extreme difficulty), and check if it sounds good (just because you got all of the parts in, doesn't mean they work that way in a piano arrangement. Clashing voices are especially problematic with piano music, because it's all the same timbre). It may turn out that you actually have to take out a voice or two, do something creative with the layers, or simplify one or more voices (for example, as long as the harmony is still clear and present somewhere, harmonizations of individual voices may not be necessary).

It's playable, but it requires some control and both hands would need to share the middle staff. The melody is in the bottom staff, and I believe there's a countermelody in the upper staff. I could mess around with cross staff notes, but I'm not sure if that's the best decision here.
EDIT: I've also done a version crossing staves. It's not as neat as the first one, but it doesn't confuse people with multiple staves.

Yes. I've made a positively sloped line going one eighth note right and one bpm up. Then I messed with the level and time ratios. I've also just tried making the increase directly. Nothing I change seems to affect the magnitude of the increase.

Zunawe: Fixed. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/84117653/Assistance/Song%20of%20Soaring.mus) The accel. expression works by having a tempo which it needs to end up at, so by not having one it accelerates super slowly. I just made an invisible tempo marking for 260 and put it over the last bar.
rosabellis: Ravel uses 3 staves at times in his music, as do others so it's not unheard of but his music is incredibly complex.
Looking at the pictures you posted, I think the 2 staff option would be better (with some readjusting) for the sake of presentability. I haven't listened to it though, so as Fierce said, the key is how it sounds.

I'm curious what the reasoning was for removing the solo arrangement requirement. If we're talking about appealing to our audience as a site, solo arrangements are pretty important. There's nothing worse than finding a song you want to play and discovering you can't do anything with it without another performer / another piano.

So... with this new (great) system, it seems like sheets are accepted one at a time, resulting in a steadily growing backlog of accepted sheets. How many sheets do you plan to have accepted before it's update time? I currently count six accepted sheets using the new method, as well as those accepted using the old, however many that might be.
At any rate, the system appears to work quite well. Every posted submission seems to get feedback, the arrangers are actively present in the feedback threads and update the sheets as required, and the uploaders participate actively too, resulting in a very transparent and visible feedback-and-approval process.
Last, a couple suggestions for improvement:
1) A line of text somewhere in the NSM panel, asking the arranger to keep an eye on the thread for the submitted sheet. This to prevent people from doing "hit-and-runs", AKA submitting a sheet and then leaving. I guess feedback will be most active for the first couple of days after submission, after which the thread might fall to the second page if nobody tries to follow up the critique and improve the sheet.
2) This is cross-referring to the Abandoned Arrangements project: Clarifying the "legal" stuff, or at least our sort of code of conduct. If a sheet is arranged, submitted, critiqued, but not improved and abandoned, are other members free to take matters in their own hands and re-format and re-submit it? Or is the sheet considered the property of the arranger until it is accepted? Should there be a time limit? I just want this to be clarified, to prevent the forum from being filled with near-finished arrangements that are just not good enough to make it to the site.
When it comes to editing another person's work our policy has been (as far as I know) that the original arranger still gets credit for the work, but the editor adds an "Edited by X" line underneath the other authors.
This only applies if small/minimal edits are made (minor changes like formatting, a few wrong notes, etc.)
I never thought it was that way, if that was the case, every sheet on the site would say "Edited by DekuTrombonist"
I thought it was that if they were minimal changes, they keep the original arranger, and if they were extremely significant - like you re-wrote the sheet in another format- then you can either put both, or just your own name, depending on how much material was used by the original arranger.

The little bit of text shouldn't be too hard to add. As for hit and runs, I'd say the problem would be the opposite. We will look at older submissions first so newer ones might sit for a while before we get to them.

I was just about to submit my first sheet, but the game was not listed on the submission page. Does this mean that sheets from that game are not allowed or just that no one has submitted sheets for that game? If it's the latter, how do I submit sheets for a game that is not listed?
Just choose "other" in the first menu, and check "Can't find what you're looking for?", and type in the name of the game.

Romaji will do. And use the ū if that's a more common use.

As far as I know the way you pronounce "ō" is usually word specific. word like ōkami turns to ookami and dōshite turns to doushite. With words like tōhō, some turn it to touhou (which is more common) and some turn it as touhoo.
Anyway, my question is that can I write the tempo marking as BPM = 100 or q = 100. Finale Notepad doesn't seem to like the ♩ symbol.
If there's something your version of Finale can't do, feel free to ask other arrangers or an updater to do it for you.

Idk, I've been studying a lot of pieces with similarly brief chromatic modulations and they tend to use key changes a lot. If you're modulating from Eb major to D major (which is what I assume actually happens in the piece), even for just 8 bars that'd be a bitch and a half to read using accidentals.

Like, just as an added (possibly optional) field for the submission form, could we include the url and have that incorporated in the post?

I've seen both a fair bit, even one bit of Chopin with A# major (I think it was A#, it's been a while) notated with accidentals in order to maintain correct spellings of key relationships connected by major thirds.
As an updater, I tend to leave short modulations to personal preference.

The note is missing from your version of the arrangement, but its not a huge deal so it can probably just be ignored. Basically, where the rest is in measure 4 is actually another CEb chord (and I'm sure some other timing is moved around too but I can't eyeball it).

Most of my experience with modulations comes from baroque music, so I pretty much never key sig changes.
OH!!! I finally hear it. Thanks for your scruple Bubbles. I dismissed it initially because there is indeed a rest after the first one, but, thanks to your importunity, I now realize there is supposed to be another triplet eighth, or four C-Eb chords altogether.
I've decided to just throw in accidentals, that way I won't have to send it to a computer at school and can just finish it at home :)

My bad, I was going from memory there. The fact remains that it doesn't at all sound like you're changing into what you think you're changing into. While I wouldn't necessarily expect to see every note of the scale used (different ones being Eb, F natural, Ab, Bb, and C natural), the fact that you say there's no Bb gives me some serious doubts. I was about to say that an Eb major chord in D major could just be indicative of the neopolitan six chord, but if there's no fifth, then I have no idea. If you could show me where in the piece you're talking about, I could probably be a lot more helpful.
It's not actually in D, it's in F, but you're playing on a D then you go to an Eb is what I mean. And as far as I know you don't actually play a Bb for that little section; it's just not there.
I didn't say modulating for a reason :P but I guess I could have been WAY more specific in my first post.

Try closing it and restarting the submission. Make sure you are putting the correct file in the right place. If all else fails, borrow someone else's computer or use a different browser. The problem is probably on your end.

Sorry, we can't accept mp3's in place of midis. every file has to be of exactly the type that it asks for.
btw, are you using ".midi" instead of ".mid"?

Just because a duet/solo pair might be based on the same song doesn't mean they're evaluated in the same way. The approach for both is quite different and whichever way you look at it, they are still separate arrangements.

Just now looked through the "Archive" subforum, and noticed we've built up three full forum pages of accepted sheets since mid-October. That's 60 in three months, which is actually a quite good pacing (on average, it's one accepted arrangement every 36 hours). Looks like the new system works great!
Hey everyone. I'm new here and have multiple arrangements I would like to post from different games. I've looked at the requirements for the correct format of the actual score so I don't think there will be much of an issue there.
However, I have used MuseScore for all my arrangements. Is that going to be a problem? I know Finale is popular but I would like to avoid paying lots of money for software. It doesn't have to be free but $100 and up seems a bit steep.
Also, any helpful advice on posting arrangements would be greatly appreciated.
Finale Notepad is free. You can switch/copypaste from that if needed.

There are also cheaper version like Finale SongWriter. It does not have all the Finale-features, but you can try all of them for 30 days to see how much you really need. I would not recommend Finale NotePad... It is horrible...
People around here who have higher versions of Finale will generally be quite happy to add things into your sheets that Notepad or other versions might not be able to do. So feel free to ask around for help if you decide to go with a cheaper option.

Xaoz, you are quite correct. Finale Notepad is horrible! I cannot change clefs which is essential for one of the pieces I've transcribed. Also, for a different piece I completed the actual notation but I cannot get those stupid pno. abbreviations removed or get the quarter note symbol inserted for the tempo marking. I even followed the directions on the Finale website's help section but to no avail!
So, can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on the cheapest version of finale that will allow me to get my transcriptions up to site standards? I am not paying $650 unless:
A. There are copious amounts of sexual favors involved.

B. I get to choose a day when all the major symphony orchestras in the world perform Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.3. They all have to use authentic harpsichords, all the double bassists have to play with the German bow cuz reasons, the conductors have to state that Bach is the greatest architect of music of all time, and finally, at the end of the performance there has to be a moment of silence where the harpsichordist farts loud enough for the audience to hear.

I would also recommend, in addition to the two links Maelstrom gave, to create an index of people's arrangements that have different formats. For example, if you wanted to work in landscape instead of portrait in Notepad, you can just import someone else's arrangement that is formatted like that into your program. But, you'd have to find it first. So if you create a list you can use for templates, that would help you be more self-sufficient rather than always asking for templates. Fortunately, I know fingerz has made quite a few duet arrangements, as well as myself. This method could really be used for almost anything that Notepad can't produce, like repeat signs, ottava (e.g. 8va/8vb), page sizing -- the works!
Also, seriously, I'm very pleased that you've started trying to do some real arranging. Keep it up.

Are you allowed to submit a variety of small tunes from one game as one sheet? (Example, PMD1 Fanfares by Bespinben)
I was thinking the same thing. I think they should be individual sheets though. Examples: 1-Up fanfare by Deku; Super Mario Bros., Wii Channel Fanfare by Wiiman96; New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Open Note Door by me; Banjo-Kazooie, etc. I think they should be individual sheets. Maybe the sheet count (for submissions) can be increased if the song is like 5 bars or less. Because who wants to submit a sheet that is really really short that counts as a full sheet/song? If you know what I mean :P
I wouldn't mind combining things like that into one arrangement if it's from the same game or something. I did with some pikmin arrangements on my page.

So I noticed the complete utter lack of Pokemon Stadium songs and I thought I could maybe try some. I for sure want to get the minigame songs done, but a thought occurred about all the other songs:
The battle songs are either remixes of battle themes from R/B/Y like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7Dl2rkmydk which sound the same as the original, and some are battle songs remixed from non-battle themes like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngyleisbQtE that essentially sound different from their original inspirations.
So, which songs could I arrange from Pokemon Stadium that don't sound exactly the same as from our R/B/Y section on the site? This has been bothering me for some time.

Oh trust me, even a song like "Free Battle" has enough new material to rightfully deserve its own arrangement. Heck, even some of the harmonies are expanded (like the string backings in the first 13 seconds). Also, that timpani/drum combo? Oooh would I love some of that deliciousness in an arrangement.

Yes, but it's up to you to decide whether to write the key signature as C major or use D major key signature and "borrow" accidentals from C major (that is, naturalizing the B and E). I usually use the mode-specific key signature if a song never deviates from that key (ex: Temple of Time), whereas I usually just "borrow" accidentals for songs that flip-flop back and forth (ex: my PMD GtI Ragged Mountain arrangement).

The only difference between D minor and D Dorian is whether the 6th is raised or not (Bb or B natural). If you see Bb's in the piece, I would write it as D minor (1 flat) key signature.
My preference is to have the key signature reflect the mode, in this case I personally would keep the flat out, especially if there are no Bb's. It's probably more correct to have the Bb in the key signature though, naturaling all the Bb's
Its theoretically correct to keep the key signature of D in this example, since that is tonic.

For some reason, for example, the right hand is mezzo-forte and the left is piano but all the hands are piano. Anyone know how to fix the problem? Finale 2014 btw.
You need to program the upper and lower staffs to have separate MIDI channels. To do this, don't use the preset "add instrument --> piano", rather, add two blank staves, and then combine them into a group manually (with brace and all). This will let you have separate dynamics.
You could also just write in some invisible articulations to quiet down one hand and strengthen the other. Either works.

Finale 2014 has an export function that can put files into .mus, .mid. and .pdf form. This effectively makes the .musx file the "master file". Is this acceptable when there are no major formatting issues? Or, for consistency, should we export to a .mus, open that in 2012, and create the .mid and .pdf from there?
As long as there is a .mus gile, I don't see any problem with that.

Notepad is a free version meant to convince you to pay an excessive sum for the fully featured version. It's not cheap.
You could export the Musescore into a MUSX file then import into Finale Notepad.
Also, for 3.) Just replace the "quaver-quaver" with a "dotted quaver-semi quaver" if you know what I'm saying.

When converting finale files to PDFs, the tutorial thread mentions filling in tags for the pdf (i.e. author, subject, and keywords). The export function of Finale 2014 leaves these fields blank. Should they be filled in manually, or is it not such a big deal?

Okay, having listened to it, the two versions are exactly the same. One isn't longer than the other. I'm thinking of having it as "Palm Tree Paradise," since the Karaoke version is just an "extra."

I think it's easier if you show us the song your trying to arrange, so we can give a good answer. It's a bit difficult to answer to your question as it is now. Personally I don't think it's such a smart idea to transcribe rap vocals, I think it would only sound weird on piano. But it might depend on the case.
Yeah, I wouldn't do it on piano. I'd do a separate vocal staff using ghost notes, since just having the lyrics wouldn't really give any hints to the rhythm. This would also allow you to notate the occasional pitched vocal part, too.
Under the "NSM Panel", I have two submissions from Shin Onigashima in (the max at one time, as I understand). One was accepted last week, the other hasn't been, but hopefully should be soon since I recently made the updates requested by the mods.
My question is mainly about the timeframe: how long does the submission/acceptance process usually take, and when will I be able to submit more sheets?

How long: very different. Some just takes a few days, while other stay for month.Ddepends how much there is to be done in the arrangement, some needs a lot of editing while others are almost good to go, and also how complex the song is.
"when will I be able to submit more sheets?": When your sheet has been uploaded to the main site in an update. Since one of your sheet has been accepted it will be uploaded in the next update. When the update happens is unclear but we try to make 1 update/month. But since we got some other fixing projects, performance update and also school start, the process is a bit slow at the moment.
Has anyone done the Famicom Disk System startup theme yet? I don't see it on the site anywhere.
Followup question: For songs from hardware, do we need to add "BIOS" to the end of the system name? ("Famicom Disk System BIOS" vs. just "Famicom Disk System"). I noticed someone did that for the GameCube jingle and was wondering if that was standard.

The issue is, what if he doesn't want his stuff on the site and we put it up anyway. Sure, he happens to be a fairly specific case as a mod where that's probably not an issue, but we've already mentioned many times that this site is in a legal grey area. No matter how mundane the action might seem, we should always comply with somebody's request concerning their own work and efforts, and we should strive to never use their work without explicit permission first (i.e. in the form of a submission).

Can you explain what you mean by "single lined?" It depends based on what you mean.
He/She probably means this (http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/download/pdf/895). There are very few of those on the site, and they tend to only exist because the original pieces are simple enough to easily play with one hand. Given that the goal is accuracy and playability, you would probably be directed to having somebody collaborate on something with you. Perhaps create a topic for your arrangements so you can transcribe what you feel comfortable with, and then see if you can find somebody to complete the transcription. Over time you'll get enough practice to feel more comfortable with two hands. The people here will be happy to help you improve too.

At least, nice to miss a thread like this by just a little over a week, and then see that the Fixing Project in question is almost finished. Just had a look at the SM64 Fixing thread and saw most of the sheets were finished, with only a few in progress. That's remarkable! I know many users feel nostalgic for the "good old days", but really, things have never been as fast-paced around here as it is now. And the quality of the work... well, have you ever seen some of the older sheets? What we take as minimum requirements nowadays would have been a rare gem of excellent quality back then.
By the way, for the next project: Can I nominate something other than a game? If there's one set of sheets I feel should be given extra care, it would be Main Themes. The representative piece of music for the game as a whole should really be given a sheet of good quality. That's especially true for the "classics".
Then again, it's been a while since I've browsed the site archives thoroughly, so I'm not that sure on the need for a major fix for most of them. Still, just throwing suggestions out there.

Or a section, I'm thinking about Metroid and Castlevania, Starfox for example.
Section for Main Themes or for the game. Dragon Quest and Metal Gear are very short sections.
If a game has DLC and I'm arranging a track from the DLC, should the game name be the name of the game or the name of the DLC.
Example: If I am arranging "Brokentooth March" from Lisa: The Painful RPG's Lisa: The Joyful expansion, should I name it after the name of the game? (Lisa: The Painful RPG) or the name of the DLC (Lisa: The Joyful)

I can't submit replacements. I tried changing a former submission to a replacement, but it didn't work, so I deleted the submission and tried resubmitting it. I typed in the name of the sheet and uploaded the files but after submitting I get the error message "You need to select a sheet to replace." Maybe there's something wrong with the sheet name box thingy?

I've been getting along fine with the NSM Panel, except that it has never accepted my MUSX files. Not from Day One. When I try, it says that I did not upload a MUSX file. Everything else has been working.
Does anyone know if there's a silly mistake I'm making? I use my MUSX files to create all my other files, so it surprises me that the MUSX would be the one to have problems uploading. I have them, so I'd like to include them!
I've managed to upload every musx file I've submitted with no issues.

Are you putting it in the correct place? There is a separate spot for both MUS and MUSX files. While MUS files are mandatory, MUSX files are not.

You don't need to use the NSM panel to submit your Miscellaneous Arrangements. Just make a new topic under that Sub board and post some Dropbox links to it and wallah!

Being a finale default is not a bad thing. Second+ page titles have always been mandatory, as seen by literally every sheet accepted since quality controls have been in place. Double post. The Formatting Guidelines have been updated to include the material mentioned above. In addition, I have expanded upon the "finale defaults" section for those of you who needed it in writing.
The answer to this question is probably obvious, but is access to full Finale software a requirement for submission? Based on the fact that a .mus file is required for arrangement submission, I am assuming that access to the full version of Finale software is required to submit any scores to this site. I could not find this requirement explicitly stated anywhere, but it seems like it is an implicit requirement.
I.e., I can write arrangements in Sibelius 7 (the only annotation SW that I have access to). But there is no way I know of to convert a .sib score into .mus format unless one owns a copy of Finale.
Just double-checking before I give up completely. Thanks.

You can download Finale Notepad... Even though it's a pain to use.
I think that it'll be okay with another notation program; it'll just be a bit more of a hassle to get them accepted onto the site. I'm pretty sure there's an arranger or two in the community that doesn't use Finale. Then again, I don't know how that actually works.

I use Musescore and can't purchase Finale at the moment. My music can meet all of the guidelines for submissions except I can't get a .mus file, but I can get a .xml, .mxl and .mscx . I can get a .midi and .pdf, just not the .mus

another thing you could do is get Finale Notepad (which is free) and import the XML into finale yourself
All three files must match, though. Once you have an mus file, you'll need to create a midi and PDF from it instead of what you were using prior.

You can as long as you specify what it is. There have been some sheets with percussive notes that have been accepted as well. I don't think you are allowed to put invisible percussion in the midi file though

It wasn't worth it to buy that game with the deed to my house, a kilogram of pure gold, 40 cattle, and my firstborn son from a street vendor in the middle of South Africa, who promised that his magic beans would change my life forever.
When uploading a submission there ought to be an option for Musescore files (.mscz). I have tried different notation software (Lilypond Musette Notepad ect.) and these pale in comparison to Musescore. Musescore has the not only best interface, but more options and it's free. Notepad (which seems to be the standard here) lacks even basic abilities such as to change time signature, which was extremely frustrating when I was trying to make a piano reduction of "Treasure Sleeping in the Sand". Another plus is that you can upload it to the Musescore website with links and credits to NSM which I think would widen the audience not only for your sheets, but bring more people to the site.
I'm sure there have been countless conversations about preferred notation program among the staff in the past, but NSM has always primarily used Finale and that's how it's going to be for a while. I personally use MuseScore so I agree with everything you're saying, but to switch notation programs at this point would be impractical and would require reskins of every single sheet on the site, not to mention require everyone to use two programs in general.
Woah woah woah slow down there! I sign up here a month ago. I think that I would be a little presumptuous to think I was on a crusade trying to convert the format of the entire site. let me rephrase: is adding an additional format (such as .mus .pdf .midi) doable?
It's doable, but ultimately unnecessary.
I mean finale already covers the scrolling sheet music format pretty well, so it seems overkill to add more.

That is extremely problematic. If you needs someone to write an entire file for you each time you encounter an obstacle then it seems that Finale most certainly does not cover the scrolling sheet music format at all.

I wonder, how difficult is it converting xmls into finale? I though it was just to make the complete arrangement in musescore/sibelius or whatever, then export the xml into finale and in finale export the files again in their final shape. Is it so? Btw we should really make a tutorial on how to submit arrangements from non-finale softwares. Since we have Finale as a standard it we really need one of those tutorials to make it easier for users of other softwares to contribute.

Jester Musician (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=6897.0) is a perfect example of a MuseScore user who's able to contribute. He makes some very polished sheets using MS that only need very minimal touch-ups in Finale.

I liked what people tried to do with this thread, but it's not easy going through all 5 or so pages to check if someone is doing one particular song. (I mean you could search but it's still annoying to check this thread every time you want to make an arrangement)
I rarely look at this thread. I didn't even know that's how it worked. I think it would be better for people to make a new post if they're arranging a bunch of stuff, so they can announce it so people know without having to check this thread for themselves.

This topic is just here if you want to share what you're doing or are interested in seeing what others are up to. Nothing is preventing you from arranging whatever it is you want to do.

It looks pretty weird. I'd separate it into two layers and make the D's quarter notes stemmed downwards.
So, concerning Shadow of the Colossus arrangements, the game's soundtrack was officially released under the name Shadow of the Colossus: Roar of the Earth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_of_the_Colossus#Audio). The CD included 7 extra pieces not released with the original game. One of those (Memories, which is currently arranged and on the main site) was included in the PAL release a year after Roar of the Earth came out. So, now the actual questions:
1. Roar of the Earth was published by King Records, and is the official listing of the song titles and such. The game itself was published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Should the copyright be "King Records", "Sony Computer Entertainment", "King Records/Sony Computer Entertainment", or "Sony Computer Entertainment/King Records"? (The game and soundtrack came out in the same year, so that's not different)
2. When I put the first arrangement up, it was decided that Kō Ōtani was the best (or at least most common?) way to spell his name. Ryan McGaughey's arrangements are both Kow Otani.
3. I assume all pieces (including ones not in the game, but on the soundtrack CD) are fair game?
I just want to make sure there's consistency before too many more arrangements make it up on the site.

Additionally, the public critique by Zeta posts enable a sheet to reach its maximum level of quality and accuracy, therefore adhering to the standards that users would expect from NinSheetMusic.

I haven't been involved in an official arrangement project, but that is also irrelevant to the issue at hand.
The only problem I see with Unofficial Projects is there relative over abundance to everything else in Submissions. Unless the Updaters feel the need to change how they choose to operate, there' nothing to discuss about it.
Then perhaps we should have regulations imposed on updaters.
I think I get what you're saying. Essentially, right now the updater's priority safe the submissions board and the official arrangement projects. Anything other than these things is deemed "unofficial" business, and maybe chosen to or to not be done at the updater's discretion. "Acceptance" in one of these miscellaneous fields should be (and has in the past) been a temporary thing that implies that it will just be easier to accept in the future; that it has been looked at by an updater already and it will be easy work in the future, not that it is already "accepted." Arrangers posting about their own arrangements being "accepted" will be disappointed.
I've looked at the Guide to Making Replacement Arrangements (http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=6238.0). And it's pretty fine but I can see a sort of problem. For the first 2 replacement types (revised and revisited) it says that you've edited a sheet, either quite little (revised) or by a lot (revisited). And for "challenge replacement" it says that it's an arrangement you arranged completely from scratch and therefore you have the rights to all the credits for it. The big problem here is: how are you supposed to know if you arranged it from scratch or not?
That's why i'd like to purpose a change to the description of the replacements to be more based on the "amount of improvement" you've made in contrast to the one already on site. So revised could be like "only minor changes, mostly formatting", revisited could be "quite a lot of changes, both musically and formatting", and challenge replacement could be "either entirely new-arranged or changed entirely throughout the entire arrangement". The thing is that I want the different types to be based on the how big improvement it is in comparison to the one on site, rather than if you have arranged it from scratch or not. That way it will be a lot easier seeing what type of replacement it is.
The reason I'm concerned with this is because I've seen a lot of replacements, of which some I've thought "is that really an x replacement", and sometimes people seem to just want to do challenge replacements just to get all the credit while they doesn't necessarily deserves it.

The Challenge Replacements are really only intended for the really old stuff that predates our quality-assurance, so if it comes up on something newer, it's seen as a red-flag.
Perhaps it would be a good thing to encourage arrangers in submission threads for replacements to explain what and why they're rearranging to that degree in the post that contains the YouTube panel. I think any of the below are acceptable explanations:
- Which bars and notes you edited for accuracy or severe playability issues
- A justification of how the previous arrangement is inaccurate, flawed, etc.
- A link to a request you did not post to replace the arrangement
It would also indirectly speed up the replacement evaluation rate.

Again, highly unnecessary. While it might be nice to see exactly what one did, the updating job is to evaluate EVERYTHING about an arrangement. This would mean that one would check even the things that weren't listed by the arranger as well, making it extra work for the arranger to type up.

Hello, I have some Pokémon Game Boy sheet music to offer. I'm wondering if anyone can help translate the sheet music from my format to NinSheetMusic's format.
Recently I published a small collection of Pokémon Game Boy (Red/Green/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver/Crystal) song transcriptions on my own web page: https://www.nayuki.io/page/transcription-of-pokemon-game-boy-music
My work emphasizes on accuracy and completeness. Because the Game Boy has 4 audio channels that you can listen to separately, it was a straightforward effort to transcribe each channel and obtain perfect pitch, octave, and rhythm.
All the songs I transcribed overlap with the existing collection available at NinSheetMusic: http://www.ninsheetmusic.org/browse/series/Pokemon
But when I listened to and read the songs at NinSheetMusic, I noticed some of them had a few notes off, and some had entire melodic tracks missing. (Specific examples available)
I would be delighted to donate the content of my sheet music. But it was hard enough to make and publish one copy of the music; it pains me to do it a second time. Can anybody help with this? Thanks in advance.
Feels really sad to say this but... We had a big Pokémon R/B/Y project some like some... month or maybe even a year back or so. And we, the NSM community, has basically arranged the entire soundtrack and in good quality as well. So it would be tough to make those transcriptions made into submissions to the main site as we already has arrangements in good quality.

But while you can do a bunch of things with transcriptions, our site is tailored specifically for piano arrangements. In that regard, some of the source material has been altered or omitted for the sake of playability. Keep in mind the limitations of a solo pianist - hands can only stretch so far and move so fast. That's why you'll see many sheets differ from the exact sound you find in the game - they're written for the pianist, making them playable while maintaining as much of the notes and "feel" of the original as possible.
That said, mistakes do happen, so if you notice anything you think is an error, like an incorrect rhythm or pitch, please do let us know! We strive for accuracy at the same time as keeping sheets playable.
And I think your site is absolutely fantastic. There's a ton of cool stuff on there! (As a math/CS guy I really like it...)

You're right about the NSM arrangements being piano-oriented. After browsing a couple of PDFs, I caught on that they are all structured around a bass and treble staff, which probably meant it is intended to be played by a solo pianist.
Some of the sheet music posted on NSM are quite faithful to the Game Boy original but appear hard to play because one hand is doing two non-chorded melodies. (I am not a pianist unfortunately and can't judge accurately.) Examples under the "Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version" heading include "Battle! (Gym Leader Battle)", "Cycling", "Road to Fuchsia City: Leaving Lavender Town", "Rocket Game Corner". These existing examples seem to violate the human playability guideline in favor of cold accuracy.
Now I don't know if this is helpful, but here are a few minor inaccuracies I found in the NSM published scores:
- Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version: Battle! (Gym Leader Battle): Repeat at the wrong position
- Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version: Cycling: Bars 9 and 17 in the left hand
- Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version: Pallet Town Theme: Bars 15 and 16 in the bass staff
- Pokémon Red Version & Pokémon Blue Version: Rocket Hideout: Bars 29 to 32 have several pitches off
- Pokémon Gold Version & Pokémon Silver Version: Cherrygrove City: Bars 2 and 3 in the bass staff
(And thanks to cross-checking with NSM, I caught a critical flaw in my RGBY Route 1 music.)

As for "Pewter Town". I actually arranged it for the project, but it was rejected (I'm assuming) and edited or something by someone else (or mine was accepted but edited by someone else). Anyways, I think it was because of the Left Hand being very "cluttery" and difficult and uncomfortable to play. As you can see in the images in the spoiler.

Y, it is a community-driven site, filled with free VGM sheet music. Being an arranger myself, I got to say that it is really impressive. Also nobody expects you to match it (the entire site) if you're interested in arranging, so you shouldn't feel discouraged if you want to.

~Pewter City: As Tobbeh showed above the left hand gets kind of messy if we go the transcription route. A lot of clashes and near misses between the two layers in that range - you get a bunch of small (major/minor second) intervals which don't really sound good. In the original the two LH voices are played using different soundfonts and volumes so there isn't any noticeable conflicting between the voices. But when playing for piano it's a considerable increase in difficulty without much reward. So the more prominent voice was chosen for this one.

Constant 16th note dyads is something I'm pretty sure no one wants to do. Sounds a bit emptier without that other layer, but... way more approachable. If you were going for m. 29-32, that's again because of constantly conflicting/overlapping voices.
~New Bark Town: [Intro reference] (https://www.dropbox.com/s/yc1cclnl8cn5na8/New%20Bark%20Town%2B.pdf?dl=0) Here, the middle layer isn't quite near the melody or the bass part - juggling it between hands to include it in the sheet would result in large intervals in the RH and more complicated rhythms in the LH. Ultimately I decided to go with a route that would make it easier to play, and specifically better articulate the rhythms. You'll see the bassline I created for this sheet is a combination of the bassline and the middle layer. Hopefully you'll agree this is a lot easier to play without much of a loss when listening. (Most of the middle voice is just an octave away from other existing notes anyway.)

We don't cater to a specific type of pianist around here, but keeping things relatively accessible is always looked upon favorably. Another thing I would like to point out is that this is not my sheet, and the arranger chose to omit the voice as such. You'll encounter some sheets that might seem easier than they should be and some sheets that might seem harder than they should be, and that is because leeway is granted for the arranger's own style and preferences. Different people weigh accessibility and inclusion of voices in different ways, and I highly respect arrangers` decisions to include or exclude certain voices. This isn't to say "you're wrong", far from it, I'm just explaining why these sheets are as they are!

Here's a peculiar quandary I've run into: What do I do when the in-game version of a song is different than the one that plays on the official soundtrack?
Just to give you some idea of what I mean: The in-game version of a song has sections A & B which loop over and over indefinitely, but the version on the soundtrack includes A & B and an additional C section before looping back to the beginning.
Normally I'd just shrug it off and choose one or the other, but I'm arranging multiple songs on this soundtrack, and some I'd rather use the in-game version, and some I'd rather use the official soundtrack version. I'd like to use either one or the other for all arrangements for consistency's sake. Thoughts?
That's a good question. Similar situations that come to my mind are Shadow of the Colossus (which features intros/endings to pieces which aren't played in-game) and Undertale (where the key of the piece is sometimes different than the key in the OST). Just thinking back to Undertale, I think the general rule for the project was to arrange what was on the OST and that's why we dropped the "Genocide" arrangements, so if it was me, I'd say arrange what's in the soundtrack. But that's just my two cents.
Go on a case by case basis. I'm on mobile so I'm to lazy to give YouTube links, but Serpent Eating the Ground has an ending that isn't in the game, but it doesn't add anything to the song except making it impossible to play. That one is a good example of one to leave out

I use Musescore, and it doesn't have the option for exporting .mus files. Is it okay if I just have a .mxl or .xml file? Or will someone be able to convert it?
If you want to submit an arrangement to the site, you will need a .mus. You can convert it from musescore:
1. Download finale notepad 2012
2. Open any template from http://forum.ninsheetmusic.org/index.php?topic=7600.0
3. Export it to musicxml
4. Open the musicxml with musescore
5. Copy/paste everything in it
6. Save it as musicxml
7. Reimport it in finale notepad
8. fix all collisions and the other weird things than could happen in the process
9. save it as .mus
^to add to this, once you create the .mus file, the midi and PDF files need to be exported from the .mus (and not from musescore). This keeps all three files consistent with one another.
Howdy! New here, first post. I have a few arrangements I will be submitting after I have formatted them according to the guidelines. I have a couple of questions:
1. I don't have a PC, I have a Mac. I use MuseScore for my arrangements, and cannot run Finale Notepad as it is a windows-only product. Is the music XML file acceptable, or do I need to find a member who has Finale Notepad to do the conversion for me?
2. Regarding the formatting guidelines, are there any restrictions on (for lack of a better term) non-standard notation practices? As an example, I have one piece that uses three sixteenth rests in a row several times in lieu of the probably more correct eight rest + sixteenth rest. It's an intentional choice however, the entire piece is sixteenth notes and rests played in unison, and this is much more readable (to me) than the eight + sixteenth.
2b. Another example: I have a piece that doesn't have any pedal markings (they clutter up the page, and there's nothing all that unusual about how this one should be pedaled) however, the left hand in many measures has two 'voices', and one of the voices is written over the other (so I might have a whole note sustaining the measure, but also a half note and a quarter note to be played on the 2 and the 4). This isn't all that unusual for something with multiple voices, it is to illustrate that the one voice is to be held (by hand or with the pedal) and the other is to be played on top of it. On first glance though, it might not look correct. Would this be an acceptable editorial choice in a submission?
3. Lastly, for the copyright of the piece, is there a good resource? I assume the copyright of the game itself would be used, but I'm not sure.

You're free to post whatever format stuff you want and ask for help on your personal arrangement thread - your space, you do whatever you want there. We just need files to be converted before you submit your arrangements officially through the NSM Panel.
I made same behind-the-scenes changes to the submission form so if you have any issues with the form rejecting files, let me know and they should be easier to sort out now.

Replying to the submission thread with a youtube embed is usually what people do. You can look at other submission threads to see that as well.
With regards to your other question, it can vary quite a lot depending on how good the arrangement is, how easy it is to check, how active the arranger is etc. The best thing that arrangers can do to shorten the time their arrangement is in submissions for is to make sure the arrangement is of high quality and to respond to feedback quickly. Once again you can check out other submission threads in the archives to see how long it took them to be accepted.
Just a suggestion -
As I look through this site (I'm new here,) even in this thread, I see more and more people using Musescore for their arrangements, as I do. I think accommodating for those folks would increase this site's appeal tremendously. I don't hold grudges against those who use Finale, but it, especially Finale Notepad, is a pain to use for me. Regular Finale is costly, and using the free version, even to just follow the current formatting guidelines is a chore, because of how limited it is. To make it easy for users to use whatever software they prefer for their arrangements would be awesome.
Just a few changes to the formatting guidelines would be great - here are a few things that would help us Musescorers.
1. Make formatting options Musescore friendly. Especially letting the site address be noted next to the copyright information, on the same line, separated by a slash because Musescore doesn't allow multiple-line copyright texts.
2. Let arrangers submit a Musescore file instead of or along with a Musescore file
3. Including samples and instructions for formatting with Musescore
The current system does work, however, and I am aware that this would be a lot of work on your end, but I think it would be worth it to improve the site.
Valid points, but a couple of things:
- We have discussed this semi-recently here (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=10129.0) and you can read about some of the reasons why we decided not to for the time being.
- Right now we lack the manpower to go about an effort like that, as our staff members are largely preoccupied with other tasks. I don't know if that will change in the near future.

How would I work this in a piano arrangement? Should I skip the intro or work the percussion rhythms into notes on the piano?

What is the standard practice when arranging music from a game that has the same soundtrack as an earlier game in the series? Should it be submitted as the original game or as the version you based it on?
For instance, I'm arranging the Summer theme from Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town for GBA which can be found below:
But though Friends of Mineral Town isn't an exact port of Harvest Moon: Back To Nature for the PS1, it is set in the same town and uses mostly the same soundtrack! Here is the equivalent song from the original:
As you can see, the song itself is nearly unchanged though the instrumentation has been adapted for the GBA's sound chip, and I don't think they're different enough to warrant separate arrangements.
I also wonder whether most people are aware that these two differently titled games have the same soundtrack but altered for different systems, which could cause confusion if they're looking for a sheet from one of those games. (And let's not get into the confusingly titled Harvest Moon: Boy and Girl, which is the PSP port of Back To Nature...)

In this case, I personally think the differences made by the GBA's compressed sound quality (I was able to notice a missing instrument in the first 10 seconds) are enough that if you were specifically arranging the PSX version, the arrangement might turn out differently, in which case I'd say this arrangement should be submitted under the GBA title. But other opinions are welcomed!

Actually on a closer listen you might be right, there's also some note length differences that could be reflected in an arrangement. Thanks!
Obviously in this case I would list the original composer, but should I credit the composer/sound designer from the GBA version as well? I'm assuming they are the one who re-arranged and adapted it for the GBA.
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here's an idea -
Lots of people would love to play the plethora of music on this site but are blocked off by the difficulty of some straight transcriptions. What if people could submit "easy" versions of songs on the site? I think that would increase the appeal of the site immensely.
I need help from someone.
I currently can't afford Finale at this time even as a college student, so I use MuseScore. The problem is, MuseScore can't export to .mus, which is required for submitting sheet music. I tried exporting to .musicxml and importing it into Finale Notepad so I can convert it to .mus, but only the first page showed up on the screen, even though I exported the whole thing.
Can someone use their version of Finale to convert my .musicxml file to .mus, export to PDF and MIDI, and send me all three? I really can't think of any other option.

I'm arranging a piece and NotePad is being difficult with the format. I need to vertically space the measures differently so the notes don't cover up all the text boxes I'm not supposed to move, but I can't figure out how to fix it for the life of me. Can NotePad even do it?

I'm an amateur composer, and I'd like to arrange for this site, but I don't want to spend a bunch of money on Finale to do it. Am I allowed to submit an arrangement through .MID? I mainly compose through Noteflight, so odd notation shouldn't be an issue.

In order to submit a sheet you will need at least a .mus, a PDF, and a .mid file. However, there are a few ways to get a .mus without the full version of Finale if you don't want to spend that much.
Option 1: Finale NotePad is a free version of Finale that allows you to create .mus files (though it's now Windows-only). It's functionalities are limited, however, so either you can ask someone with the full version of Finale to make more complicated formatting edits (we have an entire thread (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=685.0) dedicated to this), or another notation program which leads me to...
Option 2: You can use another notation program to create an .XML file (the universal music notation format) and ask someone else to input it into Finale to do the final edits (or do those yourself in NotePad). I'm not sure if Noteflight lets you export .XML files, but MuseScore is a free fully featured notation program that will let you get pretty close to the required formatting before exporting the .XML file. (If you're an amateur composer I would highly recommend MuseScore anyways, it's quite user-friendly and has a lot of community support, all while doing a significant amount of what professional notation programs like Finale can do.)
There are quite a few people around who manage to create arrangements without Finale, so you should be able to get around that through some combination of the options above. There are lots of people here who would be willing to help so feel free to ask if you need it.
I'm afraid that option 1 is out of the question for me, seeing on how I compose on my school chromebook. But I checked, and Noteflight does support export to MusicXML files. I don't know a good way to test the quality of it, seeing as most programs are blocked, but it can't be as bad as importing XML, seeing as that doesn't even work. Now all that's left is to figure out what to arrange... Thank you so much!

Sorry yes, MusicXML is what I meant, it's a certain type of XML file. If there is an option to export an uncompressed MusicXML I think that works slightly better, but either will work. If you check out the official NSM formatting guidelines (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?board=20.0) and follow them as closely as possible with Noteflight (you might not be able to get all the fonts and stuff but do what you can), it will make the conversion to Finale easier. There are some piano arrangements of game's full OSTs that I find that would be great for submissions. What are your thoughts? It would seem as a good convenience for some; having the full track to play or choose from.

I personally don't think it is necessary to compile entire game OST's into one file as some type of sheet music book on the site itself, and anyone who wishes to do so themselves could put in the work to compile their favorites into one pdf if they so wish. As for arranging entire OST's to be displayed separately on site, there were a few Arrangement Projects in place for that very purpose (where Undertale is an example of one that's 100% complete), although interest and commitment levels tapered off with the Diamond and Pearl soundtrack so there are different official projects put into place now
However, if you want to organize your own unofficial arrangement project for a game then you are free to do so. There's already one that exists for Deltarune (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=10383), along with a few (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=8017) others (https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=8062) that have died out.
What file format should uploads be in? I have Musescore, not Finale.

Submissions to the site should be in .mus, PDF, and midi formats. The .mus format is Finale only, but there are a few ways to convert MuseScore files to Finale that are used by many MuseScore users here. So I finally have a PC and have the capability to submit things to this website... spent several hours learning how to make all the necessary conversions of my Musescore files into Finale files... only to find out that it is literally, completely, legitimately impossible to meet the submission guidelines with only Finale Notepad. I don't have $600 to drop just so I can indent the first system and add measure numbers.
I'm quite frustrated, as I was really looking forward to submitting a few things, and I don't understand why a) Finale Notepad lacks such BASIC functionalities when software like Musescore has them available for free, b) the admins of this open-source, free site would decide that its volunteer submitters can only use the software that locks basic functionalities behind a paid gateway (and excludes Mac and Linux users as well).

If you want to meet the submission formatting guidelines with Musescore and your only Finale product being Finale Notepad, definitely try out the template and program in https://www.ninsheetmusic.org/forum/index.php?topic=10136.0. Copy your desired music into the template first, fiddle with the copyright, etc. ...Or just follow the instructions in the OP of that thread. Be aware that Step 5, "Drag-and-drop the .xml on the .exe", is Exactly As It Says On The Tin, and attempting to run the .exe won't work. Do whatever necessary to make the .exe pass virus checks. ...Then you'll have to move the "quarter note = # bpm" away from the "Allegro"-like tempo indication in the Finale file. And you'll likely have to adjust ottava lines and the notes they affect in the Finale file, too. But at least you should meet the submission formatting guidelines now!
I'm a fellow Musescore-into-Finale-Notepad user and Musescore fan myself, and the template and program in that thread have made submitting scores to NinSheetMusic substantially easier for me without paying a cent for music notation software.
...I don't trust whatever Musescore 3.0 tries to do with "smart-adjusting" the template and its contents, though, so I work on template-using music in Musescore 2.X only.
I've personally heard and read that this website primarily uses Finale for legacy reasons and because Finale is rather popular and changing primary file formats or adding additional ones is surprisingly hard in the back-end. I guess we haven't received enough complaints from Mac users (who apparently can only use the fullest-price Finale version) to make a file format change.
...I also personally doubt that NinSheetMusic itself is open-source. The times I've brought up a website-related bug report, I always got the hunch this website was closed-source.

Yes, I apologize for the inconvenience. As Dekkadeci mentioned, the short and simple answer is that the site has always used Finale files as the standard - this site was founded before MuseScore even existed and the overall submission paradigm has not changed significantly in the past decade or so. Of course, here we are in 2020, but it's not just as simple as allowing non-Finale files - the software doesn't currently allow for enough visual consistency with the rest of our collection (you can ask Bespinben about that), and there isn't sufficient expertise/support among the staff at the moment to expand the site's capabilities as such.
All that said, in addition to the pointers Dekka mentioned above, people around here are super willing to help you out with file formatting as well as musical feedback. There are a bunch of people around who use MuseScore as their primary notation software and still produce stuff for the site. So don't feel excluded :)
What instrument combinations are allowed in the submission? Because I just finished an arrangement for 2 pianos, 8 hands, which I've never seen before on this site. I wonder if this combination is allowed.

Hi, I'm new here so sorry if this is a stupid question.
I have an arrangement I've been trying to submit, and I used the form in the NSM Panel thing, but nothing is popping up under the submissions area for my sheet. Under the NSM Panel, it also says I have zero submissions. I wasn't sure if I did something wrong or if it just takes a while for it to get posted there for feedback. Any help would be appreciated! :)

So, once you enter the series, game title, track title, and instrumentation, you need to make sure you upload all the files needed. You need a MIDI, PDF, and a MUS (Finale file). If you don't have Finale, export an XML file from your notation software of choice, download Finale Notepad (free from the Finale website (https://www.finalemusic.com/products/notepad/)), and export as MUS. Then be sure to click the "Submit" button at the bottom.

Turns out I was trying to submit a .musx instead of a .mus file, thank you for the help!
I just had one of my sheets accepted, and I finally was able to actually read through it myself and I noticed a typo that didn't get caught in the screening process. Am I still able to edit the files after they've been accepted, and if so do I just do it through the NSM panel the same way I would edit it if it hadn't been accepted yet?

So uh, i just joined and want to submit an arrangement for 'Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations' (Arranged the Pursuit theme).

Yeah. All the site's submissions have to be for piano. If you want to share your band arrangements and other stuff though, you could create a subject in the "Miscellaneous Arrangements" topic. Plenty of other members do that. You could have a look around there and see how they go about it before deciding on that. Then you could just post in your subject each time you make something similar.
The NSM panel was updated today. It was a minor update addressing some bugs that were reported since the last upgrade.
